I continue my quick study of Jude (given it's only one chapter), and my focus today is Jude 1:5-7, Jude presses on with a warning against false teaching as he gets more pointed and shares how false teachers - identified by their sin - will be eternally condemned.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V5: Yes, Jesus did come to save and rescue - just as He did of Israel in Egypt.  Note how Jesus' name is explicitly used in the text, reminding us of how He is part of the Triune God who has existed since the beginning and will exist through end times - He reigns forever more. Ultimately, Jesus will come to judge during the final days and those who do not believer are condemned - as such v5 reminds us that there have been people who have already been eternally condemned, including Pharaoh and residents of Sodom and Gomorrah. V6: We are reminded how God reigns over all - including sin, sinful people, and Satan (see also this post). God allows a restrained Satan to roam the Earth seeking those to devour until end times when he is finally defeated by God. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: My own research reveals that, among scholars, there is some debate whether the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah are already in hell - this is deserving of further reading.  Jude wants us to be clear who these false teachers are - they are wicked and we should be able to recognize them as such by their sin.  They twist and pervert the Gospel and they are ungodly - unable to bear fruit (see also text from yesterday). 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We are to both avoid twisting and perverting the gospel, and falling prey to those who do.  Claim the promise that God saves (and seals) while He also judges (upon end times) those who do not believe and are ungodly. Follow the example of Jude who ultimately believed - confess and believe.

I've now moved to a quick study of Jude (given it's only one chapter), and my focus today is Jude 1:1-4, where the half brother of Jesus warns believers to watch out for false teachers (identifying them by their patterns of persistent sin) who have "crept in unnoticed," and how they can defend against a threat to the church by "contend[ing] for the faith."  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V1: God calls those who believe - softening their hearts and giving them the gift of faith - these are His "beloved" and they are "kept for Jesus Christ" as He seals, secures and guarantees their salvation referred to in v3. V2: God provides mercy, peace, and love.  The faith referred to and given (via calling) in v3 was delivered by God - again reinforcing how it is revealed and provided by God - not something you earn. V4: God is gracious - abounding in love and rich in mercy.  
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv3-4: Jude is eager to write believers about a threat to the church - false teachers - and how to protect against this threat. First, believers must "contend for the faith" implying efforts to put on a vigorous defense and fight for Truth that it not be twisted to suit human/wicked/ungodly desires. This leads to judgement from God and condemnation.     
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We are to avoid falling victim to false teaching.  Claim the promise that we are "kept" for Christ and secure in our salvation.  For an unbeliever, follow the example of Jude himself who was skeptical but found faith after Christ's resurrection.  Contend for the faith - this starts with getting to know Christ and asking for (praying) discernment to help you identify truth and false teaching.

I conclude my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon, today with my focus on Philemon 1:8:25, where Paul urges Philemon - not out of compulsion - to receive his runaway slave Onesimus, whom has become a believer, rather than punish him.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Vv8-9,14: God - and as a church leader faithful to Him - does not want us to do anything out of compulsion; instead we are to do something out of desire to please and glorify Him because of our gratitude to Him and in response to our love for Him for what He has done for us.  Paul's leadership position in the church could have led him to compel Philemon to not punish Onesimus harshly, but he wants Onesimus' heart to seek this outcome of "[his] own accord" (v14).  I base my argument here on similar text on giving to the church from 2 Corinthians 9:7 where Paul shares that a believer is to give based on what is "in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." Vv15-16: Paul does not know for sure why Onesimus ran away, but he acknowledges that God is in control, His ways and thoughts are not our own (Isaiah 55:8), and that we should look for His purpose and Paul suspects that Onesimus is to return to Philemon so that Philemon can demonstrate Christ's grace and forgiveness.  There are no coincidences - we should always look at our circumstances and see how God is at work molding us into more of His image. God seeks a heart for Him.  
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Onesimus is identified (v10) as a son to Paul - of course not in the biological sense but in as Paul's charge similar to how Timothy was to Paul.    
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We are to avoid doing anything out of compulsion.  Claim the promise that God is at work in all circumstances for good (Romans 8:28). We should follow the example of the woman and others who - not out of compulsion - out of love gave a penny to the offering - had a heart for God to give to, love, serve, and forgive others as Christ did for us.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today, I start Philemon, focusing on 1:1-7, where Paul sends greetings to an early church leader named Philemon, as well as greetings to those who attend his house church in Colosse.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V3: We are reminded that Christ is a God of grace and peace - He is full of grace in that we don't get what we do deserve (death and eternal damnation), but we do get what we don't deserve (salvation).  Plus, this grace continues to flow in an inexhaustible supply. See also this post on DesiringGod.com. Christ is a God peace in that He is not a conquering God but one that seeks to bind things together in love through faith - delivering peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:6-7).  God should be the object of our gratitude, love, and prayers, and we should be faithful as He is always faithful - see vv4-5.  V6: God gives us amazingly good things and an eternal inheritance - James (James 1:17) even says that "[e]very good gift and every perfect gift is from above[.]"  
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv1-2: Paul makes it clear that he is a prisoner.  Fellow believers (Timothy, Philemon, Apphia, Archippus) are referred to lovingly as brothers and sisters in Christ and as fellow workers [in Christ.]  We must also share the same love and affection with our fellow believers in the local church. Paul goes even as far as referring to Archippus as a "fellow soldier," implying that believers are in spiritual warfare - which of course we are.  This points to Ephesians 6:10-20 where Paul expands on this spiritual warfare and how we are defend ourselves via the "whole armor of God."  Vv4-6: Paul prays for his fellow believers and he prays prayers that are pleasing to God - that the Gospel be advanced that the effort be "effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ."  V7: We are to be encouraging to our fellow believers - use our words to build one another up - see also 1 Thessalonians 5:11. 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Claim the promise that God is full of an inexhaustible supply of grace and that He provides a peace that surpasses understanding. Follow the example of Philemon whom Paul praises for his love and faith and leadership in the church.  Be an encouragement to other believers.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today my focus is Colossians 4:7-18, as Paul concludes his letter to the church in Colosse by sending final greetings and sharing many examples of church members working to encourage and support one another.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: God draws people to Himself and knits together via divine appointment both the local and global church - and He holds all of it together via love (see also Colossians 3:14).          
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Paul specifically names nine individuals who are actively supporting others in the church - with examples of serving alongside one another, encouragement, sharing in suffering (e.g. imprisonment), sending greetings, praying, working hard on one's behalf, etc. These examples demonstrate how Christ seeks for the church to function - first and foremost how we are one body working together for the same purpose - to advance the gospel and bring glory to God. When one part of the body needs help, the other parts of the body come to assist. See also Romans 12:4–5, and 1 Corinthians 12:12–27.  Church unity and all the parts of the body working together (including other churches) in unison drive the gospel.  Love of God and of one another holds it all together.
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Claim the promise of how God holds all things together in love and our love of God and for others will advance the gospel. Follow the examples of those described here in the text today who love, serve and support one another in ministry.  Identify your role in the Great Commission - the church's work - and faithfully serve and fulfill this role.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today my focus is Colossians 4:2-6, as Paul begins to wind down his letter to the church in Colosse. Here, he asks for prayer and urges the church to be a light to others, not wasting any valuable time.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V3: God is in complete control - go back to chapter 1:15-17 - where God holds all things together.  For more on God's sovereignty, see John Piper's book Providence.  In light of God's sovereignty, it is God alone that opens and closes doors, giving us opportunity to advance the gospel.  V3: The fullness of God contains mysteries that are only completely known upon a believers arrival in Heaven (or upon Jesus' 2nd coming) - see Isaiah 55:8 and this post on the mystery of Christ.  As we hunger and thirst for righteousness and draw near to Him (Matthew 5:6 and Jeremiah 29:13), He promises to fill us and that we will find Him, essentially that He will reveal Himself to us (not fully but progressively until glorification).       
• What do we learn from the text about people?: V2: Because God is in complete control and only He knows what is to occur, believers must be watchful (or alert for changing circumstances that need to be addressed via prayer or otherwise accounted for).  At the same time, we know that God is at work hearing and responding to our prayers and He is SO good - as a result we should be thankful in our prayers, assuming a posture of gratitude (in all circumstances - see 1 Thessalonians 5:18). V3: Paul wants believers to understand how difficult circumstances are used by God to advance the gospel - he goes as far to effectively say, please use my difficult circumstances to advance the gospel....and v4 to make the gospel presentation clear giving him the words to say. V5: Believers are to "walk in wisdom" to the outside world, "making the best use of time."  My read here is that walking in wisdom - or abiding (saturating self in) in God's Word IS the best use of time.  Spending time with God in study of His Word and prayer are two of the best uses of your time.
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Claim the promises that God reveals Himself to those that believe and to us He is progressively revealing the mystery of Christ.  Follow the example of Paul to seek that God use our difficult circumstances to advance the gospel and that we be effective in doing so.  Draw near to God and abide in His Word in study and prayer - daily. Be gracious with your speech.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today my focus is Colossians 3:18-4:1, where Paul pivots to commands for Christian households, including wives, husbands, children, bondservants, and masters.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: All commands in the text today are rooted in the Lord, including v18, v20 (pleases the Lord), v22 (fearing the Lord), v23 (for the Lord), v24 (serving the Lord Christ). and 4:1 (Master in Heaven).  All Biblical commands from are the divine words of God as recorded by Paul.  All the roles we assume in our earthly life are given to us by God for His purpose and glory - vv23-24 makes this clear.  V25: We are reminded that God will hold all accountable for what they have done - good and bad. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv18-23 and v:1 give us commands for wives, husbands, children, fathers, employees and employers.  In all of these roles we serving and working on behalf of the Lord (vv23-24).  V24: We have an eternal inheritance as our reward - for more on this inheritance see this podcast.  V25: We should fear God lest we not please Him and suffer punishment - fear should act as a preservative.   
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?):  As a father, I must not provoke my children, and as an employee not be a "people pleaser" - serving for appearances only. All believers should claim their eternal inheritance. Follow the example of Paul who tirelessly served the Lord as did many throughout scripture and redemptive history.  Work heartily for the Lord.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today my focus is Colossians 3:12-17, where Paul continues his exhortation to "set your minds on things that are above," providing more affirmative examples.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V12: Just like Israel was God's chosen people in the Old Testament, believers are God's "chosen ones, holy and beloved" - those to whom He has revealed Himself and given them faith and eternal life.  This reinforces text where faith is a gift from God - not an earned gift - as well as how God chose us while still sinful and hostile to Him - see also Romans 5:10 and Ephesians 2:8-9. These are both reminders that should cause us to fall to the ground in worship and humility. V13: God forgives. V14: Love - a core attribute of God (see also 1 John 4:8 and 16) "binds" and holds everything together "in perfect harmony" - see also Colossians 1:17.
• What do we learn from the text about people?: V12: As a response (see use of "then") to how God has chosen and saved us and in response to how we are alive in Christ (reborn), Paul exhorts us to vv13-17 "put on then "compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience" - see also these same attributes of Godliness as "fruit of the Spirit" from Galatians 5:22. V13: We are to "bear with one another," and forgive just as God forgives us - unity in the church is very important, so we should not allow minor and petty disagreements and complaints to fester into conflict and strife.  Churches are full of sin just as the world is so we should - again - forgive our brothers and sisters in Christ just as God does. V14: We must love - both of God first and foremost and then others - reflecting the two most important commandments.  V15: The peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:6-7) - that which only comes from God - should "rule in our hearts" as Christ renews and transforms us into more of His image.  This peace of Christ calls us together as a church body - it also causes us to be thankful. V16: We must read and meditate on God's Word - the Bible - and allow it to "dwell in [us] richly," such that we can teach and admonish "in all wisdom" with a posture of worship and gratitude. V17: All of our very being, in actions and words, should reflect love and glory of the Lord (see also 1 Corinthians 10:31).      
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We are to avoid allowing complaints and sin among our brothers and sisters in Christ to fester into major disagreements and conflict.  We should claim the promise that God forgives and gives us a peace that surpasses understanding.  Follow the example of Christ who forgives us.  Put on love - of God, and of others.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today my focus is Colossians 3:1-11, where Paul builds on text from chapter 2:13 where he shares that believers are "alive in Christ," and as such we are to "seek the things that are above."  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V1: Christ is in Heaven, "seated at the right hand hand of God." See also Luke 24:50-51 and Acts 1:9-11 where scripture shares how Jesus ascended to Heaven 40 days after the resurrection.  This command repeated in v2 and in both the affirmative and the negative by sharing that we are not to set our minds "on things that are on the earth." V3 reminds us that our old self has died and we have been reborn (regeneration) - alive in Christ and our life is "hidden with Christ in God." The implication is that we cannot see this life hidden in Christ in God as it is above in Heaven - this could be the eternal life that awaits believers upon death or Jesus' second coming. V4 shares that what is hidden will appear and based on the doctrine of glorification our new self that is progressively becoming more like him (sanctification) will be complete and we will be in Heaven with Christ "in glory." Vv5,7-9 describe the sin that is to be put to death and v6 shares how "on account" of this sin God's wrath is coming - end times and judgement day when Christ's assured victory over sin and death will be complete.  This is a warning to be prepared for this day. V11 shares how Christ "is all and in all," encouraging us to share the gospel with all tribes and nations (Great Commission) and that we should acknowledge that sin is great equalizer among humanity - we all sin and fall short of the glory of God - see also Romans 3:23 and 1 John 1:8.      
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv5,8-9: Paul calls us various sins, including "sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry[,] anger, wrath, malice, slander, ...obscene talk from your mouth[, and] ly[ing]."  Vv9-10: These sins represent our old self and our new self (reborn and alive in Christ) "is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator."  This renewal of our minds is further described in Romans 12:2 and Ephesians 4:23.
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We are to put to death sin in our lives, including but not limited to the sin described in the text today.  We should claim the promise described in the doctrine of glorification that all of us will be in Heaven with Christ again and the glorification process will be complete.  Follow the example of Christ who saw beyond the cross, set His mind on things above and endured the cross.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today my focus is Colossians 2:16-23, where Paul explicitly warns against false teaching that has "no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh." Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Vv16-17: Old Testament ceremonial law was only a shadow of things to come - namely Jesus Christ and the New Covenant based on his shed blood.  He came to fulfill the law and to establish this covenant with all those who believe - see also Romans 10:11-13 and Hebrews 8:5-6. V19: Jesus Christ is the Head (God) of the global church and all members (churches and their members/believers) are "nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments...[and the church] grows with a growth that is from God."
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv16-18, 20-23: Harkening back to my first post on Colossians where I shared a brief overview of Paul's purpose on writing to the church at Colosse, we are warned to - just as the Bereans did - examine (and hold fast to via faith in) scripture closely such that we have discernment to identify and not fall victim to trusting/following false teaching.  See also this blog post for more on the Colossian Heresy.  One of the Colossians' false teachings included how Old Testament Jewish ceremonial law remained intact when we know that Jesus came to fulfill the law and to establish a new covenant based on faith not obedience to ceremonial law.  See also this post.  Paul explicitly and accurately describes these false teachings as things that may "puff" people up "without reason by [their] sensuous mind[s]," as having "an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity," and most damning of all, as having zero "value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh."  This indulgence of the flesh is Satan seeking to get between you and God by warping your understanding of who Jesus is such that you not follow the One True God Jesus Christ. 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid falling prey to false teaching that is of "no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh."  Claim the promise that only Jesus saves and that He alone gives new life. Follow the example of Paul and the Bereans to seek God with all of your heart, soul, and mind, to test scripture, and to seek discernment such that you can identify truth vs false teaching.  Follow God alone and do not add to or subtract from scripture as it is God's perfect Word.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today my focus is Colossians 2:6-15, where Paul reminds believers of how Christ gave them rebirth (regeneration) in Him, and that they should continue to abide in Him, lest they are taken "captive" by "elemental spirits of the world." Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V9: The whole fullness of deity dwells in Christ and the church. V10: Christ is the head of all rule and authority - He reigns over all, including all governing authorities (see also Romans 13:1-2) and Satan.  Vv12-14: Through regeneration or rebirth in Christ, God raises believers from spiritual death to new life where we have victory over sin and death as He "cancelled the record of death that stood against us." V15: The rulers and authorities thought they killed Christ but He not only rose and was victorious over sin and death, He also "disarmed" them by taking away the very weapons they tried to use to stop the spread of the Gospel.  They used both physical and spiritual forces but He could not be stopped and gave us the same power that raised Him from the dead.      
• What do we learn from the text about people?: V8: There are unbelievers (scoffers) and believers alike that seek to take believers captive with false teaching or just wrong teaching that focuses on "elemental spirits of the world."  Be careful for these influences.  Do not become friends of the world or pollute your mind with false teaching.  Abide and remain in Him.  Seek encouragement and sharpening from brothers and sisters in Christ.  Vv12-13: Without God people are spiritually dead, enslaved to sin.  
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid becoming friends of the world by growing comfortable with worldly ways or by allowing false teaching to captivate or engage you.  Claim the promise that we have both the same power that raised Christ from the dead but also the power to triumph over the earthly forces that orchestrated Christ's crucifixion.  Follow the example of Paul who put on the "whole armor of God" - regardless of his persecution and imprisonment, He continued to advance the gospel.  Abide and remain in Him.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today my focus is Colossians 1:24-2:5, where Paul moves from describing the preeminence of Christ to sharing the purpose of his ministry work.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V25: Paul's ministry is stewardship of both the Word and spiritual gifts given him from God to share and teach the Word.  Vv25-26: God's Word is made fully known through Christ and revealed to believers, implying that some will not see the gospel (not be saved) as believers do.  Vv2:2-3: Christ is the source of "all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" - see also Proverbs 1:7 and 9:10.        
• What do we learn from the text about people?: V14: Paul starts by sharing the first of his purposes of his ministry - that (according to interpretation by John Piper) his sufferings represent an extension of Christ's sufferings for those who were unable to personally witness His sufferings on the cross.  Vv25-27: Paul continues by sharing that his suffering furthers the effort to make the Gospel fully known to the Gentiles - that they comprehend and appreciate the riches of Christ glory.  V28: Paul then moves to further define what is meant by fully known and he does so by sharing that those who know and accept Jesus mature in Christ. Discipleship is key - we are called to not to just know Christ but to grow in Christ. V29: Paul emphasizes that he toils and struggles for this end....and Christ works powerfully in him to equip him.  This same equipping power is within all believers - the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. V2:1: Paul loves (and lays down his life in a manner similar to Christ) those whom he has not met at Laodicea - we are to love other believers as God loves us - see also John 13:34-35. Vv2:2: Paul seeks to encourage believers to appreciate that they are "knit together in love," and that they mature so that they comprehend the "full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery."  V2:4: Paul seeks these things so that believers may defend against false teaching. 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We must avoid sinful influences that distract us and pollute God's Word. Claim the promise that Christ is the source of all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge - know and accept Him!  Follow Paul's example to allow sacrifice and suffering to extend the suffering of Christ to allow God's strength to shine through your weakness.  Know and mature in Christ.

I return to my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today my focus is Colossians 1:15-23, where Paul, as part of broader effort to exhort the church at Colosse to defend itself against false teaching, shares how God reigns over all, and how believers are now reconciled to Him and justified in His eyes.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V15: He is the firstborn of Creation - meaning He existed before all other things. V16: All things were created by Him, through Him, and for Him - with the latter meaning that all visible (governing authorities) and invisible (Satan) things exist for His purpose and to manifest His glory.  V17: He is before all things - meaning that in timing/sequence and in authority (He is first), and He holds all things together - meaning that at His direction things can cease to exist and or function.  V18: He leads and is head of the church and He is preeminent. V19: The fullness of God exists in Christ the Son - tying back to v15 where Paul states that Christ is "[t]he image of the invisible God." V19: God is pleased to reside in Christ.  
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv20-21: God reconciles all things to Himself - without God people remain separated from Him, enslaved and living in sin, hostile to Him.  Vv22-23: Believers are justified, blameless, and not guilty in His eyes - above reproach (discredit, disgrace) IF we "continue in the faith" and avoid "shifting from the hope of the gospel." 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid shifting from the hope of the gospel, either by placing Your hope in things above God, or by allowing anxiety or discouragement to overcome you.  Claim the promise that - as a believer - you are holy, blameless and above reproach before God.  Follow the example of Paul to continue in the faith, and to be stable and steadfast in this faith.

Today, I pause my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon - to listen to DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotion - which today looks at how we can experience the same love of Jesus the Son that God the Father loves Jesus the Son - an incredible concept!  The highlighted text is a prayer from Jesus where He prays the love of the Father to the Son be in us.  In the devotion, Piper challenges us to "imagine being able to enjoy what is most enjoyable with unbounded energy and passion forever."  He then shares three obstacles to such an endeavor while at the same time, reminds us that these obstacles will fall away if the prayer is answered....and one expects that it would be given Jesus is aligned with the Father in desires, will, etc.  Based on the promise of this prayer, and how this promise will come true, we then see the connection to the title of the devotion - Joy Unbound.  If the same love from the Father to the Son is in us and Jesus is in us (via the Holy Spirit), then we experience and inexhaustible joy and pleasure in God.  Let that sink in - Jesus is our greatest treasure, He is more than enough to "meet the deepest longings of our hearts," we have more than enough "strength to savor" Jesus completely as our treasure, and given our salvation, we get to experience this treasure forever.  Incredible indeed!

I return to my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today I move from Philippians to Colossians, where Paul seeks to encourage the young church (which he did not found nor had he ever been) and to defend against false teaching.  "Colosse’s mixed population of Jews and Gentiles, [which] manifested itself both in the composition of the church and in the heresy that plagued it, which contained elements of both Jewish legalism and pagan mysticism.*"  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Vv10, 12: God is the most infinitely valuable - above anything else and He is our treasure, worthy of all praise, honor, glory, and worship.  He has "qualified [believers] to share in the inheritance of the saints in light."  This is a rich inheritance indeed!  Vv13-14: God "has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son."  For more on this deliverance from enslavement to sin - see also Romans 6:6, and 17-20.  This deliverance gives us freedom from sin (justification in His eyes) and eternal life.   
• What do we learn from the text about people?: V3: Paul thanks God for other believers - this is a blessing of which we should often remind ourselves.  Our brothers and sisters in Christ worship and serve along side us - sharpening and encouraging us in our walk with Christ.  God designed us and intends for us to love, worship and serve God together - from the very beginning when God provided Eve to Adam saying in Genesis 2:18 that "[i]t is not good that the man should be alone[.]" Vv4-8: Paul encourages the young church, acknowledging their understanding of Truth and emphasizing "[their] love in the Spirit."  
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We are to guard against heresy and avoid falling victim to false teaching that leads us astray from Him.  We are claim the promise that we have a rich inheritance in Christ that gives us victory over sin and death.  We should follow the example of Paul who understood the importance of our brothers and sisters in Christ and to encourage (including prayer) and sharpen one another in our spiritual wisdom and understanding of Him.  Walk in a manner worthy of Christ.

I return to my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today I focus on Philippians 4:10-23 where Paul completes his letter to the church in Philippi by thanking them for their physical and emotional/spiritual support.  Core to Paul's message is his exhortation that we are fully dependent on God to provide for all our needs and He never lets us down.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Vv13,19: God provides for all our needs, He strengthens and equips us through the Holy Spirit (the same power that raised Jesus from the dead), who never leaves and forsakes us and lives in our hearts.  With and through Him, we are indeed rich beyond measure.  See Romans 8:11, Matthew 6:31-33, and Ephesians 1:18. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv11-12: Paul describes how, through Christ, he is able to be content regardless of the circumstances - whether it be during periods of abundance or during periods of "hunger...[and] need." This same exhortation - that believers be content regardless of the circumstances - is found in 1 Thessalonians 5:18.  Our conditions and circumstances may ebb and flow but God never changes and He is our rock, He provides for all of our needs, and we can put our trust and faith in Him as He is faithful. See also Malachi 3:6, Psalm 119:89, Matthew 24:35, and 2 Corinthians 1:20. 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid lacking faith and trust in Him to provide - do not be anxious.  Claim the promises that regardless of our circumstances, God will provide, He loves us, our salvation is sealed/guaranteed, He never changes, and that He is faithful.  Follow the example of Paul to be content no matter what.  Repent of your sins, and put your faith and trust in Him.

I pause my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today I focus on Ecclesiastes 11:7–12:14 - text to be discussed tomorrow morning with my Friday AM study group.  Solomon exhorts us to flee from pursuits of earthly knowledge and wisdom and instead to fear God, and to know, love, and serve Him. Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?:  Vv11:7-10: God is Creator of all and He gives us the natural world to enjoy and the vitality of our youth to experience it with vigor.  Yet our pursuit to enjoy our youth is tempered by the fact that God is watching us, holding us to account, and the implication of v10 is that our youthful pursuits do nothing to fulfill our Godly purpose.  This is made more clear in Vv12:1-8 where Solomon (the author) urges us to "remember also your Creator in the days of your youth."  Ultimately, all of us will be called Home to Heaven in death (and resurrection) or Jesus will return and all of the created world will pass away and only the New Jerusalem will exist.    
• What do we learn from the text about people?: People pursue many things in life - yet believers are urged to focus on God first and foremost - Vv12:11-14.  For Solomon, he witnessed how many pursued knowledge and wisdom yet few recognized how all knowledge and wisdom is sourced from God - see also 12:11 and Proverbs 1:7 and 9:10.  Solomon instead urged everyone to "beware of anything beyond" God - we are called to "[f]ear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man."  This is critical because - again - ultimately all of us will be held accountable to God for whether we repented of sin and accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, and if so, how we used our spiritual gifts for His glory.     
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We are to avoid earthly pursuits above God - we should not be making such pursuits an idol. Claim the promise that God will both save and judge us.  We should follow the example of those who fear God as the beginning of wisdom.  Fear, know, love and serve God.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today I focus on Philippians 4:1-9 where Paul encourages us to "not be anxious about anything," to experience the "peace of God...which surpasses all understanding, [as this] will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus."  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V3: God maintains a Book of Life, where the names of those who are saved are recorded since the creation of the world.  He is sovereign over who is saved. See also Exodus 32:32-33, and Revelation 13:8, 17:8, 20:11-15. We also know from elsewhere in scripture how the Holy Spirit seals and guarantees our salvation - see also Ephesians 1:13–14 and 2 Corinthians 1:21–22. V7: God gives us a peace that surpasses understanding that will guard our hearts and minds - yet another cause to rejoice!
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv1-3: Conflict and disagreement exists in the church - this is inevitable - Paul encourages us in these circumstances to help overcome disagreement and conflict as church unity is very important.  V4: In light of how believers are in the Book of Life, this is certainly cause to rejoice!  V5: We are called to be reasonable, so much so, that others note how reasonable we are - we don't know the hour or the day when Jesus will return or we will be called home so we should not fall away nor should we not be ready. V6: We are also called to not be anxious and to pray.  Vv8-9: Paul's final call in the text today is for us to think about and pursue what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, and excellent (in God's eyes) - God will renew our minds to think and act like Him if we hunger and thirst for righteousness.  Paul shares how we are to model him as an example (not out of vanity but from love for their sake).   
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We should avoid as best as possible conflict and disagreement in the church, particularly with regards to inconsequential matters.  Claim the promise that the peace of God will guard your heart and mind.  Follow Paul's example and think of and pursue righteousness.

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today I focus on Philippians 3:12-21 where Paul encourages believers to press on, focusing on things eternal and not on "earthly things."  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V12: Christ made us His own - when we accepted Him as our Lord and Savior, He adopted us into His family, heirs to the riches of Christ.  See also Ephesians 1:5, Galatians 4:4–7, Romans 8:15–17, John 1:12, and 1 John 3:1. V14: God calls us "upward," to Heaven, to focus on things eternal vs of the flesh and of "earthly things" (v19).  Vv20-21: Jesus is in Heaven, sitting at the right hand of God, reigning over all things, and He is returning to bring about the final destruction of sin and death - and we already know this victory is assured.  On this day, or upon death, we will be glorified and transformed by the same "power that enables him even to subject all things to himself."   
• What do we learn from the text about people?: V12: God calls us to claim His promises that come with resurrection - all of which come to pass - see also 2 Corinthians 1:20.  V13: We are called also to press on and not look behind to our former selves where were slaves to sin and trapped in shame, etc. Vv14-16: We must recognize what we have attained - now and for eternity.  This calls us both upward and forward in spiritual maturity.  V17: Paul shares how we have Him and other believers as examples.  Vv18-19: We also have examples of who not to follow - those who trust in the flesh and have their "minds set on earthly things." V20: Believers are not just adopted into His family but also citizens of Heaven and that is where our focus should be - on things eternal where we await the day when we are called home in death or when end times arrive and Jesus defeats sin and death for the final time.  V21: Ultimately, we will be transformed - glorification - to be like Him and to see and fellowship with Him face-to-face for eternity.   
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We are to avoid setting our minds (too much focus where we treat them as a god) on earthly things that we know will pass away.  We are to claim the promise that God is saving a place for us in Heaven and upon that day (glorification) we will become like Him and fellowship with Him for eternity - this is the goal we should pursue and continue to press on until we reach this goal.  We should follow the example of Paul and other saints that have pressed on with an eternal focus - press on!
