Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 19:17-27, where we see Jesus led out to be crucified.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method

  • What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus is crucified to fulfill scripture - see Isaiah 53 and here in the text today v24 refers to Psalm 22:18.  All scripture points to Jesus and Jesus fulfills all scripture. In vv26-27 Jesus says - while hanging on the cross - to his mother "behold your son" and to Peter "behold your mother."  V27 ends with Peter taking Jesus' mother into his own home and caring for her.  Now Jesus' mother is not Peter's mother by birth but Jesus wants us to care for one another.  Here, in particular, Jesus calls for Peter to care for another believer as one would care for someone in his/her own family.  See also Matthew 12:50.  Support, care, and encouragement for other believers is emphasized elsewhere - see also 1 Corinthians 12:14-26.
  • What do we learn from the text about people?: Pilate continues to see Jesus as King of the Jews - v21 (an incomplete understanding of Jesus) and the Jews do not see Jesus as a king of anything.  Yet believers must see Jesus for who He is - Lord of All.  Read and study scripture to know God.
  • Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid an incomplete understanding of Jesus.  Claim the promise that Jesus is Lord of All and He was sent by the Father with all authority to seek and save the lost - He willingly went to the cross so that believers in Him would have victory over sin and death. Follow the example of Jesus to follow the will of God - even at great cost.  Deny oneself and bring glory to God.  Love God and love others - in particular other believers.

My Prayer: Father God, You are an amazing God who loves and saves...thank You Jesus for giving me my salvation - the greatest gift of all time.  I am not deserving of such a gift.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please continue to heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.

 John 13:31-35

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another. John 13:34-35

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 13:31-35, where Jesus shares with the disciples (except Judas who has left them) a new commandment to love one another as He has love them.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method

  • What do we learn from the text about God?: In v31, Jesus shares that He is glorified and the Father is glorified in Him...echoing earlier text that Jesus and the Father are One - part of the Triune God.  In v32, Jesus further clarifies v31 by sharing that if the Father is glorified in Jesus (as Jesus reflects the Father and bears His image), then the Father will also glorify Jesus in himself and him at once - seemingly implying that the Father and Jesus are one and glorify each other as different but equal parts of the Triune God. In v33, Jesus shows His love for the disciples (and all who follow Him) by referring to them as little children - implying that there is maturity that is lacking but to follow later as they grow in walk with Him.  He tells the disciples He is leaving them (to die on the cross) and that they cannot go to where He is going...at least not now. In vv34-35, Jesus gives the disciples a new commandment to love one another as He has loved them - and this love will be a light for others to see and be used to draw others to Him.
  • What do we learn from the text about people?: Judas has "gone out" both physically and spiritually - apostasy - vv30-31.
  • Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): New or less mature believers with weak faith should avoid sinful influences that allow Satan to enter them, lest they will fall away as Judas did.  Claim the promise that Jesus lays down His life for us (and resurrection) and this gives us certainty of victory over sin and death.  Follow the example of the disciples to seek, understand, and follow the voice of the Good Shepherd. Love God, and love others as Jesus loved us.

My Prayer: Father God, You are an awesome God who loves and saves.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of how You bless. Help me understand, apply, and be obedient to Your Word today and every day.

Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.

 3 John 1

Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth. 3 John 1:8

I continue my study of 1,2,3 John using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for these books.  Today, my study consists of an unassisted review of 3 John 1, primarily looking vv1-8 which per the commentary is the first division for the 3 John 1. Here, John gives us an example of what he has been encouraging in his words from the previous chapter - to walk in the Truth. This example is Gaius. Gaius is walking in the truth - being obedient to God (v3).  John is greatly overjoyed to see this (v4).  He ministers to his brothers and sisters in Christ - offering hospitality, even those who are "strangers" (v5).  Gaius' hospitality and love is so striking - unworldly or supernatural we might say (v6).  John encourages Gaius in his role as a missionary and as someone who supports missionaries - adding that he should support (v7) those to whom he ministers as they are humble and not seeking gain for themselves instead seeking to save others (v8).  Believers must support other believers who are fellow workers for the truth. Help me be more like Gaius.

Comment and discuss this post.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who is full of grace and compassion for me...giving me brothers and sisters in Christ who support and encourage me in my journey with You.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of how You bless me.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.
