Psalm 88, 91, 95, 108, and 109
Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Psalm 91:14-16
Day 112 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues my focus on 112 of David's psalms which my study has not already covered or will not cover through other daily devotions as part of a broader study within their historical context. This study of these 112 psalms groups the psalms into five major topical areas, and I continue with "Psalms of the Troubled Soul".
Today's psalms focus on fears whether God hears us, for protection from God, praise for God as the God of creation and as a personal Shepherd, for victory over enemies, and that one's accusers suffer punishment. Psalm 91 includes great promises for those who call on God. Promises include:
- rest (v1)
- refuge (v2, 4)
- safety from harm (v3, 10, 11-13, 14)
- faithfulness (v4)
- peace (v5)
- justice for the wicked (v8)
- answer/respond (v15)
- be with us (v15)
- honor (v15)
- long life (v16)
- satisfaction (v16)
- salvation (v16)
I have often posted about God's promises. John Piper writes that we should "arm [ourselves" with promises". Piper goes on to write that "[h]aving promises at hand that suit the temptation of the hour is one key to successful warfare against sin". This morning's post, together with my post yesterday, help arm myself in the battle against sin and for my soul.
My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who delivers on awesome promises that are amazing and offer what ONLY You can provide - thank You Jesus! I have experienced many of these blessings - thank You Jesus! I am not deserving of such love and blessings. I sin...daily, including fear of others, and what they will think of me and my faith, etc. Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You. Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me. Help me grow in my faith. Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength. Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo. Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior. Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin. Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.
