We exist to glorify God - it is as simple as that.
I found it difficult to get into a rhythm studying the Bible. Once I started blogging my study, my time with the Lord became more rich, and over time the blog became a study resource itself as I could search on topics and tags from previous entries. My objective in sharing the blog is to document my time with the Lord - let me know your thoughts as "iron sharpens iron".

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
We exist to glorify God - it is as simple as that.

I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves.
We exist to worship and glorify God.

[Y]ou were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:20
As I continue to be in between studies, having wrapped up my study looking at the life of Paul using John Piper's 30 Reasons Why I Love the Apostle Paul, I lean on DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotional, which today looks at why God created our earthly bodies, or for that matter any aspect of the physical-material universe (as John Piper puts it). Piper shares that God created everything - including all of creation - for His glory. Piper refers us to Psalm 19:1 where the psalmist writes "[t]he heavens declare the glory of God[.]" Piper goes on to explore why God goes to the trouble to create something that is fallen, broken, and full of tragedy and suffering. Piper says: "[b]ecause his Son paid the price of death so that the Father’s purpose for the material universe would be fulfilled, namely, that he would be glorified in it, including in our bodies, forever and ever." See also Romans 12:1 where we are called to "present [our] bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship." Simply put we exist to glorify God.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who does not need me but nonetheless loves me and saved me - not out of anything I did but purely out of love and grace. Thank You Jesus! I am not deserving of such love and grace. My sin is great and it continues...daily. Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You. Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me. Help me grow in my faith. Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength. Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo. Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior. Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin. Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.
Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Malachi 3:10a
I return to my study of the last four books of the Old Testament, having already covered Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and most of Malachi. My study leans on the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series volume which covers these books. While yesterday my study included a commentary assisted overview of the book of Malachi and an unassisted review of Malachi 3:6-10a, today my study is a commentary-assisted review of Malachi 3:6-10a. This commentary for this text is includes the following excerpts:
- Main idea and introduction to the text: "God’s commitment to His covenant trumps Israel’s rebellious history, holding out repentance to Israel and lavishing blessing on both Israel and the nations. Even though the people have fluctuated in their affections and devotion to God, He has not changed, which, as we will see, is the very foundation of His promise of restoration."
- Division #1 - Malachi 3:6: The text begins with God's promise of mercy for Israel based on a promise He made to Jacob in Genesis 32:28. God keeps His promises. The commentary shares: "Most of the time, when the Israelites are referred to as the children of Jacob, it’s a rebuke for their disobedience. It’s a reference to the name of their forefather before the divine blessing was bestowed. Yet, even though they were faithless, God would remain faithful to them, as He was to their father, Jacob. Their rebellion has led them far from God, but restoration is still possible if they desire change." We are are challenged today with the same promise - repent and return to God and He will return to You (see v7).
- Division #2 - Malachi 3:7-10a: True repentance and reconciliation with God focuses on humility, where the commentary shares how Israel was challenging God by asking God how to return to Him, thinking they were already living as God intended. God disputes this and offers a sharp rebuke - the commentary calls the dialogue here not one of "clarification" but one of "disputation." We should not be so arrogant to argue with God believing His judgement is wrong. Instead we should seek clarification about why and how we can live as He desires us to. We exist to glorify God. God's rebuke focused on how the Israelites were not tithing to God - v8 - calling them robbers. Our possessions come from God and belong to Him. We should give back to God what is His in obedience to His commands - see also 2 Corinthians 8-9. In response to those who claim that we are no longer under the law but under grace, the commentary shares that "grace never expects less;it always demands more...We should not give to God because we are under obligation to tithe, we should give because He has already given us the inexpressible gift of His Son Jesus Christ." See also Luke 18-19. "Malachi is not necessarily calling out those who have been faithfully giving, asking them to give more; Malachi is calling out those who gave nothing. He is calling out those who haphazardly gave. He is calling out those who are giving without worshiping. God doesn’t need your money. He wants your heart. He wants you to understand that a closed hand is unable to receive a blessing. With a generous, open hand, you are opening yourself up to receive God’s blessings. With a rebellious, closed hand, you are hindering your ability to receive God’s blessings."

[Y]ou were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
[Y]ou were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:20
I paused again my studies of both Isaiah and Proverbs to listen to DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotional, which focuses on why, in John Piper's words "why [does] God go to all the trouble to dirty his hands, as it were, with our decaying, sin-stained flesh, in order to reestablish it as a resurrection body and clothe it with glory and immortality?" Piper then provides the answer: "[b]ecause his Son paid the price of death so that the Father’s purpose for the material universe would be fulfilled, namely, that he would be glorified in it, including in our bodies, forever and ever." Bottom line, believers exist to glorify God now (in this life) and for eternity. I am reminded of additional texts on this topic, including 1 Corinthians 10:31 (So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.) and Romans 12:1 (I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.).

Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us....Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. For it is better, if it is God’s will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
Day 355 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith)
continues as I move further into the New Testament - this morning I read 1 Peter. My commentary notes: "[t]he historical record of Acts does not mention the apostle Peter after the Jerusalem conference, but it appears that his ministry proceeded in the same time period as the missionary efforts of the apostle Paul....Both of Peter’s letters are evidently addressed to the same audience, principally Gentile Christians throughout Asia, Bithynia, Pontus, Galatia, and Cappadocia. These are some of the same areas where Paul had established churches on his preaching tours and include the same Christians to whom Paul had addressed some of his letters....Without doubt this is a time of hostility, if not actual physical persecution, against all Christians. Therefore, the subject of Peter’s first letter is suffering, and the thrust of the letter is an exhortation to steadfastness. Peter begins by recounting for his readers the blessings which they have in their redemption, and then encourages them in the fact that in Christ they are God’s special people. But Peter also reminds them that, as God’s redeemed ones, they have a responsibility to glorify God in their lives."

One can easily make the case that today, here in the United States, Christians face hostility for our views, for example on such topics as gay marriage and abortion. In a broader context while some talk about tolerance, in general given the polarization we see, there is less tolerance. Therefore, I am zeroing in on Peter's words on how we are to stand firm in the faith in the face of hostility. Peter encourages us to live such lives - in both words and actions - that others cannot find fault in us.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.
So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1
Corinthians 10:31
I continue my study of 1 Corinthians. I am assisted in my study by the Christ-Centered Exposition Series commentary for this book. Today my focus is a review - aided by the commentary - of 1 Corinthians 6:12-20. The main idea for this text provided by the commentary*: "God purchased our bodies by the resurrection of Christ and united us with him so that we would be his temple and glorify him." The commentary's* introduction for the text shares that "God is not indifferent to what we do with our bodies. They matter to him, and they matter a lot." It refers to 1 Corinthians 8:1-3 where it describes how the church in Corinth "reasoned...[that] the body and food and drink and sex are going to be destroyed in the end. There will only be free spirits. So, the body does not matter." Paul tackles and refutes this view in today's text. The commentary* unpacks the text via five divisions:
- God Has Principles for My Body (6:12-13): Paul admonishes the Corinthians' laissez-faire view of the gospel where "all things are lawful." He challenges them by rhetorically asking them whether all things are "helpful" in building up the church and supporting its mission, and whether it is possible you idolize something you do over God. He reminds them that we were made for a purpose - of course that purpose is to glorify God.
- God Has Plans for My Body (6:13-14): We are referred to Romans 12:1 where we are commanded to offer our bodies as living sacrifices to the Lord - for His glory. Paul points us forward where believers' bodies will rise with Jesus in glorification when He returns. The commentary then states that "[w]here we are headed in the future should impact how we live today. What God will do with my body in the future should affect what I do with it today."
- God Has Protection for My Body (6:15-18): Quoting Shreiner, the commentary shares that: "[t]he relationship between believers and Christ is remarkably intimate such that believers represent Christ in what they do with their bodies." It also quotes (slightly modified) Rick Warren's "10 Commandments to Help Church Staff Maintain Moral Integrity."
- God Has Proprietorship of My Body (6:19): The commentary* reminds us that believers' bodies are "important and valuable" and "at conversion [God] makes [them] his home, his temple, his holy place." This is of course an "honor", "privilege", and "gift".
- God Has Paid for My Body (6:20): Paul concludes the text by emphasizing how believers' were bought and redeemed for a great price - such that we can glorify Him with out bodies. See also 1 Corinthians 10:31.

Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.
Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved. 1 Corinthians 10:32-33
I continue my study of 1 Corinthians, moving on with a review of 1 Corinthians 10:23-11:1 using the Christ-Centered Exposition series commentary volume for this book. From the commentary for this text:
Main idea: "Glorify God by doing whatever you can to serve others and bring them to salvation."
Key excerpts from the introduction:
- "In the process of dealing with this situation, Paul will put forward seven principles to help us navigate difficult issues the Bible does not directly address."
- "In motive and action the glory of God must be preeminent for the believer. Bringing him glory is essential to the mission of the church. His glory should be our one ambition."
Major divisions:
- I Will Always Pursue What Is Helpful and Builds Up (10:23): Referring back to 1 Corinthians 6:12 and 9:21, the commentary underscores core misunderstandings of the Corinthians (and many believers of today), and how freedom from ceremonial law and freedom from works as being the only means to please God should not be used to distort God's intent which is to bring glory to God in all that we do through a heart fully committed to God and through our efforts to save others. For example, we may be free to use a smart phone but if an unbeliever has struggles with pornography, perhaps we should encourage him/her to avoid use of a smart phone that enables ease of access to such sin...and similarly, we should avoid any behavior in this person's presence that encourages intense use of a smart phone. The commentary quotes Curtis Vaughn's commentary by sharing that '[Christian] liberty should be limited by consideration for the well-being of others.'
- I Will Always Pursue What Is Good for Others (10:24): "Christians are never to act in ways that harm and hurt others. Rather, we are to help them grow in Christlike-ness and build them up in their faith."
- I Will Always Pursue What Is in the Best Interest of Another’s Conscience (10:25-29): "The meat you eat is a part of God’s good creation and God’s provision for your nourishment. Eat it. Enjoy it! No need to ask any questions about it....However—and this is a big however—“if someone says to you, ‘This is food from a sacrifice,’ do not eat it, out of consideration of the one who told you, and for the sake of [their] conscience....we cannot send mixed signals and foster confusion for unbelievers and believers alike....For the sake of evangelizing the lost and edifying a fellow believer, no uncertain sound should be trumpeted. The gospel is at stake, and your witness is on the line. The spiritual well-being of others takes precedence. On this occasion, a vegetarian meal will be just fine."
- I Will Always Pursue a Thankful Heart (10:29-30): "We should be thankful for God’s gracious provisions of drink and nourishment. It all belongs to him and comes from him. We know that. Why make an issue of something when there is no issue and draw criticism over “something for which [we] give thanks?” Doing so would be foolish, silly, and unprofitable for everyone. We must each choose to pursue a thankful heart and place no unnecessary stumbling blocks before anyone."
- I Will Always Pursue the Glory of God in All Things (10:31): "First Corinthians 10:31 is a verse every Christian should memorize. It has been one of my life verses. I believe Paul intended it to be a foundational pillar in our lives that offers direction 24/7. It is comprehensive and all-encompassing in nature....glorifying God means we love him, trust him, are thankful to him, obey him, enjoy him, and take pleasure in him."
- I Will Always Pursue What Is Best for the Salvation of Others (10:32-33): "Others may be offended when we share the gospel, but they should never be offended by how we live out the gospel. Their souls and eternal destinies matter more than any right, privilege, or desire you or I may have....We must consistently prize the spiritual welfare of others above any personal preferences we have....The eternal destinies of men, women, and children hang in the balance."
- I Will Always Pursue the Principles of WWPD and WWJD (11:1): What would Paul and Jesus Do. "We all need role models, examples we can follow and imitate. For the Christian the ultimate example is Christ. To glorify God by being like Jesus should be our consuming passion that helps fuel our ambition. But we need flesh-and-blood role models, too. Paul knew he could provide that for the Corinthians. But who is providing that for you? Are you providing that for anyone else?....To live like Jesus, you must know Jesus. To live like Jesus, you must love Jesus. So, let me ask a question we all must answer. If others were to follow your example and imitate you, would they in some real and genuine sense be imitating Jesus? Or, to put it another way, can your children follow in your footsteps and in the process be walking in the footsteps of Jesus?"

Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.
Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Daniel 6:10
Day 265 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues with a look back at Daniel during his time in exile in Babylonia - this morning we review the well known story of "Daniel in the Lions' Den". Much like the story of Joseph (see story starting in Genesis 37) where Joseph serves humbly for Pharaoh during his captivity in Egypt, Daniel makes much of his time in exile in Babylonia - focusing not on the challenges of his circumstances but instead on the opportunities of his circumstances.
In his letter to the church in Thessalonica, Paul provides instructions on Christian living, writing:
"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus". 1 Thessalonians 5:18
The Old Testament contains many examples of how Israel and Judah failed to remember all God has done for them and how the prophets sought to remind Israel of God's many blessings - see example post. Worship and maintaining a heart of gratitude are therefore critical as part of our walk and journey with God. We can only glorify God if we attribute all that we are to Him and be thankful for what He has done and see our lives through the lens that God is blessing us in both good and difficult times as both (or all times) present opportunities to glorify God - perhaps more so during the latter.
I am convicted this morning to be less prideful about circumstances at work where I believe I am deserving of more than I am currently experiencing.
My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who blesses me EVERY single day - thank You Jesus! I am undeserving for the blessings You pour out daily. My sin is great...and daily, pride, worry, harsh words and actions, etc. Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You. [The people] are the shoot I have planted, the work of my hands, for the display of my splendor.
I exist to glorify God. To show His power and His glory.
1 Peter 2 says:
This is just one example of how we can glorify God. I seek to glorify God in all ways, all of the time.
My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God and Your might is incredible and the works of Your hands incredible. You are full of compassion and patience, and love, and of course SO much more. I am amazed that You love me. I am weak and I neglect You in favor of earthly comfort. I know You love me anyway but please forgive me Father. Help me so that Your desires are my desires.

Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit”— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.

All such boasting is evil. So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. James 4:13-17
I continue a pause of my study of Ecclesiastes to study James 4:13-4:17. My focus this morning is a commentary-assisted review of this text using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for this book. As posted yesterday, the commentary where James 4:13-5:20 is outlined in its own chapter of the commentary with a title Faith Lasts. The commentary then further breaks down the text into two primary divisions each with subdivisions - as follows:
Faith That Perseveres
- Humble before the sovereignty of God (4:13-16)
- Obedient to the will of God (4:17)
- Confident in the justice of God (5:1-7)
- He is coming to judge the sinful.
- He is coming to deliver the faithful.
- Patient in suffering (5:7-11)
- Trustworthy in speech (5:12)
- Prayerful in sorrow (5:13-18)
- Loving toward sinners (5:19-20)
Faith That Works
- Only possible by the gracious gospel of Christ
- Played out in the context of the body of Christ
- Ultimately aimed toward great glory to Christ
The main idea shared by the introduction for the commentary's chapter: "[f]aith that perseveres to the end is humble before the sovereignty of God, obedient to the will of God, confident in the justice of God, patient in suffering, trustworthy in speech, prayerful in sorrow, and loving toward sinners." The commentary's chapter introduction also describes how James challenges us.
The commentary for the first division (4:13-16) challenges us as it describes how when James was originally authored "[b]usiness travel in the first century was actually fairly common, and verse 13 pictures a businessman confidently planning to make a profit in the future." Contemporary life is of course no different and such thoughts are even more pervasive not just here in the United States but elsewhere. The commentary shares: James calls talking about your business affairs as if they are certainties “boasting” or bragging, that is, doing things in your own strength without admitting dependence on God. James is warning us that we can become so consumed with the material realm, thinking about our plans, plots, and strategies to work and make money, that we become blind to spiritual realities. The problem is not the planning in and of itself but planning in such a way that God has no place in the plans." We are urged to see how God is sovereign over every aspect of our lives, birth, death, and everything in between. As such we should act humbly and in reverent fear as God is in control - we should recognize that we exist to glorify God and that we don't want to disappoint Him. The commentary also shares that "the intent here is not to create a passive fatalism in our minds that says, “Well, God has determined everything, so I’m just going to sit back and do nothing and see what He decides to do.” No, remember that James gives plenty of commands to obey and actions to take. James is talking about activity throughout this book, but he’s talking about activity that is humbly dependent on the sovereign God of the universe....James describes a radically different way to live in this world, particularly in the busyness and the business of our lives. This world tells us to live like we’re going to be here forever, urging us to make our plans, acquire our possessions, and work to build our portfolio. But James tells us to submit to God. Don’t live like you’re going to be here forever. Instead, live and plan and work like your life is short and like you don’t want to waste it on worldly things. Live like you want to spend your life humbly before the sovereignty of God and ultimately for the glory of God."
The commentary for the second division (4:17) describes obedience as being either a sin of commission or omission: "We normally think of sin in terms of sins of commission: doing what God has said not to do. God says, “Do not lie,” and so you do not lie. God says, “Do not covet,” and so you do not covet. This is how we often think of sin—as not doing bad things. But James reminds us that just as serious as lying or coveting or doing anything else that God has said not to do are sins of omission: disregarding what God has said to do. This involves hearing the command of God to do something—such as the command to admit dependence on God when you make your business plans—and then choosing not to do it....At the end of Matthew 25 [vv31-46], people are cast into hell, not because of what they did but because of what they didn’t do. They didn’t feed the hungry or clothe the naked. They failed to do what God has commanded His people to do all along—to care for those in need (Moo, James, 208)." Challenging indeed - God please renew my mind and direct my steps, and help me live boldly for You!

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God[.]
David seeks to do God's will...although not always - this is a post for another day. For today, the message from David is the former...that we exist to glorify God.
They are the shoot I have planted, the work of my hands, for the display of my splendor. Isaiah 60:21
If we exist to glorify God, then we should focus on our energies on understanding and following God's will for our lives. Paul tells us that by drawing near to God, in prayer, study of His Word, silence, and through other spiritual disciplines, we can better understand Him and His will for our lives.
My Prayer: Lord, Your Will for my life is to prosper me and not to harm me. I know this. And I know that I exist to glorify You and You are worthy of my worship. You also bless me beyond what I deserve - thank You Jesus. I am not worthy of Your love, compassion and blessings. I fall short of the man You intend me to be. Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome my sin and turn towards You. Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength. Help me love others as You do. Help me grow in my faith. Give me strength. Give Lisa strength. Please heal and cure her of her cancer and the side effects from chemo. Help me lead and serve Lisa, Zach, and Dustin. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment?
There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment? Ecclesiastes 2:24-25
I continue my study today of Ecclesiastes using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for this book. Today, my focus is an unassisted review of Ecclesiastes 2:18-26, which includes both the third and fourth divisions of Ecclesiastes 2 per the commentary. Here, without going into detail reviewing the commentary - a quick glance of the commentary reveals that these two divisions (vv18-23 and vv24-26) are titled Work is Meaningless and Contentment in God and His Gifts Is the Meaningful Life. In writing how work is meaningless (vanity) - Solomon shares how it is frustrating that he works hard his whole life, accumulating wealth, etc. only to leave it behind to children or for others to benefit. This becomes more frustrating for Solomon as he writes how the recipients of these benefits will be unknown to him in terms of who they are and who they evolve to be. Solomon also shares that work produces anxiety (v23) and we know that God does not want us to worry about anything (see Matthew 6:25-34). Solomon then moves to God's role in work (vv24-26) and how working as a means to glorify God (we exist to glorify God in all that we do) brings true enjoyment and fulfillment.

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

This morning, I continued my study of Leviticus using the Christ-Centered Exposition series commentary for this book - starting chapter sixteen - Law, Grace, and Sexuality - covering Leviticus 18:1-30, looking specifically at the first theme for the chapter - Gods People Submit to God's Authority. The commentary for the first theme, starts by examining how people establish authority. One way via personal opinion - individuals, reflecting modern culture, decide what is right and wrong for themselves. Another way is via opinion of the majority or law, and Nazi Germany in the 1940s as used as an example, of course an example that we can all agree was destructive. Of course both ways are destructive and for believers - God is our "transcendent authority" as stated by the commentary - it is "transcends societal changes and personal changes" and is "settled". Believers can understand why God's has authority over all things, and specifically sexuality, because:
- He created us and He created sex - Genesis 2:24
- He owns us - Psalm 24:1, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
- God's Word is true, powerful and effective - Hebrews 4:12

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who is full of grace and mercy for me - thank You Jesus! Yet I am undeserving. My sins of harshness and worry continue, as well as many other sins. Please forgive me and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You. Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me. Help me grow in my faith. Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
‘every knee will bow before me;
every tongue will acknowledge God.’ Romans 14:11 (Isaiah 45:23)
- That is why we exist
- He is worthy of our praise
- He commands us to (Exodus 20, Matthew 22:37-40)

31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
It is not clear by others that all that I do it is for the glory of God. It is not even clear by others, particularly non believers, that anything I do is for the glory of God! Upon self examination, I feel damned! Now I know that I am not damned, yet I feel somehow very immature in my faith.
How can I do something for the glory of God. First of all, my actions must glorify God. Second of all, whatever blessing I may experience I must acknowledge that it is from God. Thirdly, every trial I may experience I must acknowledge that it is from God. This is just a start but it begins to get me thinking about how - as encouraged by Paul - I am to "do it all for the glory of God".
My Prayer: Lord, Your works and Your will is perfect. I have personally experienced Your work and Your hand in my life and I have also experienced Your perfect will in my life as trial turns to blessing. You are truly amazing and it is amazing that You love me personally as only You can do. Yet I am broken and I disobey. You call me to grow and to glorify You - yet I do not. Please forgive me. Help me glorify You in all that I do - purify me; transform my heart and my life Lord Jesus.

May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 15:5-6
This morning, I continued my study of Romans. Using my commentary - Exalting Jesus in Romans (eBook) - I continued with chapter eighteen Gospel Unity, which covers Romans 14:1-15:13. My focus today is v15:1-13, which my commentary refers to under the heading "The Lord's Example." In these verses, Paul builds on my discussion yesterday to further the case for church unity. We are encouraged to see how we have "an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves" (v15:1). I know I too often seek to please myself, whether that is out of being right or to just find comfort by lack of action - convicting indeed! We are again told to build others up (v15:2). We are reminded of Christ's example that He did not seek the easy path of pleasing himself but instead willingly submitted His life for us - see v15:3. Paul tells us that we should review our Old Testament to find hope to follow Christ's example and "to live in such harmony with with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ" (v15:5-6). We exist to glorify God - remember this! OT is referenced that we should be clear about God's saving plan as it was written in the OT - therefore we should not stand in the way of God's great design and work - unite among believers, weak and strong - we are all brothers and sisters in Christ! Paul wraps up today's verses by providing scripture from Psalm 18:49, 2 Samuel 22:50, Deuteronomy 32:43, Psalm 117:1-2, and Isaiah 11:10.
My commentary stress humility - so that we may put the needs of others first.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, when I have been weak - You have placed other more mature believers in my path to build me up...to strengthen me in my faith - thank You Jesus! I am not deserving of such blessing. My sin continues...worry, etc. Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You. Though a sinner does evil a hundred times and prolongs his life, yet I know that it will be well with those who fear God, because they fear before him. But it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days like a shadow, because he does not fear before God....The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Excerpts and highlights from the commentary on this division:
- "In Christ we get to recover and pursue God’s design for our lives. That means living out the wisdom of Ecclesiastes, which looks like contentment with what you have, kindness toward others instead of anger, the ability to control your tongue, a good work ethic, patience rather than arrogantly demanding what you want, and rightly submitting to authority. When you follow God’s design in this fallen world, things may not always work out immediately, but they will work out ultimately."
- "God will make all things new in the end [Revelation], and He will set all things right to His original design."
There are AT LEAST two key messages from God I hear loud and clear this morning: (1) we exist to glorify God (not for our own glory or satisfaction), and (2) God is SO good in terms of His grace, compassion, etc. and this grace, compassion, love, etc. is available for anyone who freely accepts it and surrenders his or her life to Him. Because God is SO good for us, why would you NOT want to live for Him?

“Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”
“Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.” Mark 3:28-30
I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark. Today, I focus on a commentary-assisted review of Mark 3:28-30, which is the text for the third (of three) division of 3:22-30 per the commentary. Excerpts from the commentary for the third division:
- "Jesus declares the gracious forgiveness and mercy of God in forgiving sins. “All sins,” literally, “whatever blasphemies they may blaspheme,” will be forgiven. All sinners can find the forgiveness of God if they will come to Him in repentance and faith."
- "However, verses 29-30 note the one tragic and fearful exception. If someone speaks against the Holy Spirit verbally and continually, with willful and malicious intent that reveals a hardened heart beyond the possibility of repentance, there is no forgiveness, and they are 'guilty of an eternal sin.'"
- "In this historical context, blasphemy against the Holy Spirit denotes the conscious and deliberate rejection of the saving power and grace of God released through Jesus’ word and act...The considered judgment that his power was demonic, however, betrayed a defiant resistance to the Holy Spirit. This severe warning was not addressed to laymen but to carefully trained legal specialists whose task was to interpret the biblical law to the people. It was their responsibility to be aware of God’s redemptive action. Their insensitivity to the Spirit through whom Jesus was qualified for his mission exposed them to grave peril (Lane, The Gospel of Mark - The New International Commentary on the New Testament)."
- "The unpardonable sin is to knowingly, willingly, and persistently attribute to Satan the works of God done by and in Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit, who testifies to these truths in your heart. (1) It is a sin of full knowledge. (2) It is an ongoing disposition of the heart that resists the conviction of the Holy Spirit. (3) It is a verbal act that attributes the works of the Holy Spirit to Satan. (4) It is a willful rejection of God’s grace in Jesus. (5) It is rooted in unbelief. (6) It is a sin a Christian cannot commit. (7) It is a sin not committed by one who is concerned that he may have committed it."
- "There is a boundary of sin where, once passed, there is no possibility or hope of return. Do not even think of going there. Instead, run to Jesus in faith and repentance. You will find open arms there! You will find forgiveness free and eternal."
It is remarkable that such learned men, knowledgeable of the law, would act in such a way as to blaspheme God's name. They were so blinded and hard hearted that their own status as supposed experts in the law was threatened by Jesus and this prevented them from actually seeing who Jesus truly is - the one promised in the Old Testament. Those of us who truly seek to deeply understand God's Word should be careful that such study and the resulting knowledge should not become an idol as it did for the scribes. We should all remain humble and our humility should acknowledge that whatever knowledge we do have it comes from God and whatever gifts God gives us in wisdom, teaching, etc. also come from God and it is God working in and through us. God gets the glory - not us! Thank You Jesus for the mercies You pour ceaselessly. I pray that I can remain humble knowing that I continue to sin and that it is You alone that forgives, provides, is in control, and deserves the glory. We exist to glorify God.
