And from there they continued to Beer; that is the well of which the LORD said to Moses, “Gather the people together, so that I may give them water.” Then Israel sang this song: “Spring up, O well!—Sing to it!— the well that the princes made, that the nobles of the people dug, with the scepter and with their staffs.”

Numbers 21:10-20

And from there they continued to Beer; that is the well of which the LORD said to Moses, “Gather the people together, so that I may give them water.” Then Israel sang this song: “Spring up, O well!—Sing to it!— the well that the princes made, that the nobles of the people dug, with the scepter and with their staffs.” Numbers 21:16-18

I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today - Numbers 21:10-20 - God provides water and the people sing joyfully in response.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

  • What do we learn from the text about God?: God is with us, He directs our steps (with Israel He guides as a cloud by day and a fire by night (Exodus 13:21), and He provides.  The wilderness is a desolate and difficult place - yet Israel find themselves in a place in v16 called Beer, which in Hebrews translates simply to a "well."  God provides water here.
  • What do we learn from the text about people?: The people respond in song, in essence, worshiping God.  This is a wholly appropriate response to God, who He is and how He provides.  Note also how God seeks for Moses to "[g]ather the people together[.]"  God seeks for His people to worship together.
  • Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): When we are in a spiritual wilderness, we should not worry, grumble and complain as Israel has been doing (see text from post yesterday).  We should claim the promise that God provides for all of our needs.  Follow the example of Christ who trusts in the Father to provide for all things (Matthew 6:25-34). Praise God for how He is with us, directs our steps, and provides - even in the wilderness.

My Prayer: Father God, You are an awesome God who loves, saves, is with us, guiding our steps, and providing for all of our needs.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of how You love and save.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin and turn towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please continue to heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

[A]ny outsider who came near was to be put to death.

Numbers 3:14-39

[A]ny outsider who came near was to be put to death. Numbers 3:38b

I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today 3:14-39, where the Lord speaks to Moses, as He provides additional commands for a census among the Levites, and more specifics on how the Levites were to guard the tabernacle.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

  • What do we learn from the text about God?: God organizes the Levites and provides them with a mission as each of the clans of Levi's sons are not only numbered (from one month of age upward), but also named specifically, they are given a specific place to camp around the tabernacle, and they are also given specific physical attributes of the tabernacle to guard.  In the Old Testament, the physical location of worship is given special meaning as outsiders are to avoid getting to close to the sanctuary, as they risk being put to death (v38).  Yet the New Covenant in Jesus, believers must understand that there is no such attachment to the physical temple as the temple itself is anywhere believers gather as believers' bodies are referred to as the temple given Jesus lives in the hearts of believers.  See also Ephesians 2:19-22 and 1 Corinthians 6:19-20.
  • What do we learn from the text about people?: As Jesus lives inside believers hearts, God intends for others to see Jesus in us as we worship through our actions, demonstrating love of others.  People do not need protection from getting too close to the sanctuary - on the contrary, God wants non-believers to be drawn to believers through the light of Jesus that shines through us.
  • Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid attachment to a church building or to physical attributes of a church.  Claim the promise that each of us as believers are a temple with Jesus residing in our hearts. Follow the example of the Levites who stood guard over the temple - of course recognizing that we must protect our heart because that is where Jesus lives.  Glorify God in your body.

My Prayer: Father God, You are an awesome God who loves and saves.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of how You sacrificed Your body and life for me...so that I could have life now to the full and for eternity.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.

The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

 John 4:1-26

Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. John 4:19-21

I continue my study of John, and today, I build on my review of John 4:1-26 by summarizing the text via an outline/divisions and a main point for the text.

Main point: God wants us to live intentionally for Him in worship and to seek and save the lost.

  1. Jesus acts with intention - there is nothing aimless about what He does as all is orchestrated with divine purposes. We should live with intent, leaning on God to understand His will for our lives.  Lean into God through daily study and prayer of God's Word to renew your mind so "that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect" (Romans 12:2).
  2. Jesus' encounter with the Samaritan woman helps us see that regardless of race, ethnic, economic, social, or cultural boundaries, we all sin and are in need of a savior.  The most important commandments are to love God, and to love others (Matthew 22:34-40).  As we love others we seek to save.
  3. Worship of God is not dependent on a physical location or a church building and God designed us for both individual and corporate worship. As the Holy Spirit dwells within us, believers become the temple.  See Matthew 18:20, 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, 6:19-20.  Worship God anywhere, individually, AND go to church!

My Prayer: Father God, You are an awesome God that loves, saves and provides others, including the church for us to live as You designed to worship both individually and corporately.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of how You save nor bless with the church.  My sin is great and it continues....daily.  Please forgive me and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul and mind and love others as You love me. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your messages for me today and every day.

A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”

 John 4:1-26

I continue my study of John, and today, I unpack John 4:1-26 using the Sword Bible Study Method.

  • What do we learn from the passage about God?: Once again we see that Jesus acts with intention - He has a plan. In v1 Jesus anticipates drawing negative attention from the Pharisees and with it not being the day or hour of His arrest and crucifixion (He still has more work to do with His ministry), He leaves Judea and heads to Galilee.  Continuing with intent, Jesus passes through Samaria and stops at Jacob's Well to rest and for water - we see Jesus as having earthly needs as the Incarnate Son of God.  During Jesus' time on earth, this site is important for its ties to Jacob, and because the in Shechem the Samaritans built a rival temple to the one in Jerusalem. He encounters a Samaritan woman at the well and asks her to draw water for Him.  Jesus does not care about racial, ethnic, economic, social, or cultural boundaries - regardless of the strife between Jews and Samaritans, Jesus shares the gospel message - referring to Himself as the Living Water - with the Samaritan woman.  As the omniscient God, Jesus knows the woman has married five times and is living with another man who is not her husband. Jesus ends the encounter with the Samaritan woman by sharing that (a) true worship of God is not limited to a building, temple or even a location, and (b) He is the Promised Messiah.
  • What do we learn from the passage about people?: Racial, ethnic, economic, social, and cultural boundaries are often obstacles that prevent fellowship and love from flourishing as division and hatred is often learned from a young age. When these barriers are removed we can see people as they are - everyone sins and is in need of a Savior.
  • Is there anything from the passage God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid,Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid racial, ethnic, economic, social, and cultural animosities - love others as God loves us.  As Jesus did, share hospitality as a means to fellowship and know others.  See Jesus as the Living Water and the source of eternal life.

My Prayer: Father God, You are an awesome God who loves and saves and You are the Living Water!  Thank You Jesus for giving me the Living Water and for my salvation.  I am not deserving of Your love nor my salvation.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.

One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

Mark 2:23-28

One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” Mark 2:23-24

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, I focus on a commentary-assisted review of Mark 2:23-28, looking at the first of three divisions, starting with vv23-24.  Excerpts from the commentary's introduction for vv23-28 and the first division:

  • Highlighting the Pharisees response to Jesus' disciples plucking grain on the Sabbath, the commentary shares: "[f]ew things are more destructive, seductive, and deceptive to a true and vital relationship with God than the deadly poison of legalism.  It is destructive because it breeds death rather than life. It is seductive because it has a natural allure for the flesh that causes us to look to ourselves rather than to Christ for our spiritual status before God. It is deceptive because it makes us think we are the spiritual elite when actually we are spiritual slaves."
  • "This is the fourth of five controversies with the religious leaders. First, they complained that Jesus claimed to be God and to forgive sins (2:1-12). Next, they were offended because He consorted with sinners (2:13-17). Then He did not fast according to their religious traditions (2:18-22). Now they take issue because He does not honor the Sabbath the way they believe He should (2:23-28 and 3:1-6)."
  • The intent of the Sabbath per the commentary: "[t]he general rule was, “Do no work that is not absolutely necessary.” It was understood that nothing was “absolutely necessary” except those tasks that could result in loss of life if left undone."  Additionally, work for good was always acceptable - such as serving others, etc.
  • "Perhaps with good intentions the Pharisees had constructed a mountain of rules that enslaved those who tried to follow them. In a reversal of Genesis 50:20, what God had meant for good they had turned to evil. In a sense the clash is not over the rules but over who makes the rules. Jesus will gladly honor the law when it conforms to God’s intentions."

Arrogance and pride are indeed dangerous sins.  As believers grow in knowledge of God and His Word, we should not use it to belittle people or hinder people's own faith journey.  Peter, for example, defended his work sharing the Good News with the Gentiles even though they were not circumcised - see Acts 11:1-8.  Paul (see 1 Corinthians 9:19-23) recognized that people less mature in their faith must be met where they are - in their circumstances.  We must acknowledge and accept people where they are and encourage them to grow in their faith - not beat them up by comparing them to yourself.

My Prayer: Father God, You are an awesome God who loves me and who is full of incredible compassion and love for - sacrificing Your own life and pouring out mercies ceaselessly every morning.  I am not deserving as my sin continues and it is great.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.

So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.

Mark 2:23-28

So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath. Mark 2:28

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, I focus on an unassisted review of Mark 2:23-28, which is the text for next chapter of the commentary.  Observations using the Sword Bible Study Method:

  • What do we learn from the passage about God?: Similar to vv18-22, God is not concerned about empty rituals if we don't have a heart for God.
  • What do we learn from the passage about people?: Pride and arrogance is one of the most dangerous sins and it led to the arrest and persecution of not just Jesus, but countless followers throughout redemptive history. The Pharisees were more concerned about their status and position then they were about pleasing God. Jesus challenged the Pharisees by citing 1 Samuel 21 as an example of God's intent with ceremonial practices where David is on the run from Saul and partakes of the holy bread set aside for the priesthood (see Leviticus 24:5-9).  Surely Jesus' example of David will not be challenged as someone whose heart is not right with God!
  • Is there anything from the passage God wants us to obey - sins to avoid, promises to claim, examples to follow, or commands to obey?: Sins to avoid - we should avoid empty ritual worship practices.  We should also avoid judgement and disagreement over matters that are either inconsequential (or not Biblical) or less clear in scripture.  Many a congregation separate over or have conflict about such matters.  Promises to claim - recognize that Jesus is King of Kings and Lord over all - having providence over all matters in the universe.  Jesus is the example to follow of course.  Commands to obey include how we are to worship - focusing on the most important commandments which are to love God, and to love others (Matthew 22:34-40).

V28 in particular strikes a chord in how Jesus shares how Sabbath was modeled during creation and then codified in the Ten Commandments - see Genesis 2:1-3 and Exodus 20:8-11. Sabbath was designed as a day of rest and to focus on God - and our heart condition is of primary concern.  It's less about what you do vs how you do it.

My Prayer: Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves and gives rest - thank You Jesus!  You also save and pour out mercies that never cease and that are new every morning.  I am not deserving of how You bless so richly and how You save.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.

For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name will be great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts.

Malachi 1:6-14

For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name will be great among the nations, and in every place incense will be offered to my name, and a pure offering. For my name will be great among the nations, says the LORD of hosts. Malachi 1:11

I continue my study of the last four books of the OT using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book as my focus remains Malachi, the last book of the Old Testament.  Today, I complete a commentary-assisted review of Malachi 1:6-14. The commentary offers both an introduction, two divisions for this text, and a conclusion that summarizes the text and offers application.

Excerpts from the introduction:

  • Given God's judgement on the priesthood in the text for their failure to lead worship with all of their heart, soul and mind - to offer their best - the text offers us an opportunity to examine our own worship to test whether we are truly offering God our best.  Worship is described as "an attitude of one's heart" towards God.
  • Based on what God has done and continues to do for us we should be loving, fearing and worshipping God!
Highlights from the commentary for the two divisions:
  • God’s Complaint against Israel’s Priests for Their Depraved Actions of Worship (1:6-12)
  • God’s Complaint against Israel’s Priests for Their Apathetic Attitudes toward Worship (1:13-14)
The priesthood in Malachi's time had grown cold in their worship.  As an example, they offered not perfect, spotless sacrifices, but blemished and imperfect sacrifices.  They did not offer their best.  This of course was reflective of their heart towards God - despite who God is, what He had already done, and continues to do for them (and us). God not only expects our best but He deserves it!  He is worthy! For believers of today, there are many distractions that we allow to separate us from a worship of Him.  We should throw ourselves at the mercy of God to forgive us when we do this - He will welcome us back if we truly return to Him with a repentant heart and if we recommit to loving Him with all of our heart, soul, and mind.  The commentary shares how we cannot hide from God - He knows our heart.

Excerpts from the conclusion:

Then the word of the LORD of hosts came to me: “Say to all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted? And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves?

Zechariah 7:4-7

Then the word of the LORD of hosts came to me: “Say to all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted? And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves? Zechariah 7:4-6

I continue my study of the last four books of the OT (complete: Zephaniah, Haggai; to complete: Zechariah, Malachi) - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Zechariah 7:4-7, which the commentary outlines as the second of five divisions for the text 7:1-8:23 (7:1-3/8:18-23, 7:4-7, 7:8-10, 7:11-14, 8:1-17).  The commentary offers an application largely consistent (including reference to 1 Samuel 15:22) with my post yesterday, as the title for this division in the commentary is Transformed from Serving Ourselves to Serving Him.  Key excerpts from the commentary:

  • "When God’s people observe a fast or any other religious tradition to please ourselves or to win the admiration and approval of others, God is not pleased and the activity is wasted."
  • We are urged to avoid traditions just for the sake of our own comfort and desires as it becomes "...a meaningless tradition or, worse yet, a type of idolatry."
  • Many churches are likely guilty of this traditionalism.  "But traditionalism is when we take the form of what has been done before and we just go through the motions without considering the meaning. Experiencing God’s living presence requires deep transformation and we begin to say, “Lord, I want to serve You and not myself. I don’t want to just go through the motions."

We are encouraged to remember Jesus' words where he shares the most important commandments to love God and love others - see also Matthew 22:37-40.  When we seek to love God first, we will pursue a worship that is pleasing to Him and wholly appropriate for the One who is before, in all things, and holding all things together.

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Romans 12:1

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1

This morning, I pause my study of Haggai to prepare for leading Sunday school tomorrow where our focus will be on Old Testament prophecies of Jesus - The Life of Jesus (Part 1 of 2). One of the OT prophecies comes from Psalm 40:6-8 and discussed in Hebrews 10:14 where Jesus is the perfect sacrifice.  I am then drawn to Romans 12:1 where Paul exhorts believers to offer their bodies as a living sacrifice.  John Piper, in this post on DesiringGod.com, draws on this to share that while mercy to others is important, worship of God is first and foremost and that "Before Paul describes our new life in Christ as merciful, he describes it as worshipful. Before you think that the Christian life has everything to do with being merciful to people, realize that it has everything to do with being worshipful toward God....Before we give ourselves away in mercy to man, we give ourselves away in worship to God. This is crucial to see. We must never let the Christian life drift into a mere social agenda. I use the word “mere” carefully, because if God is left out, our mercy will be mere social agenda. We do no one good in the end if we are not worshiping and leading them to worship in the acts of mercy that we do. If our good deeds are not expressing the worth of God, then our deeds are not worship, and in the end, will not be merciful. Making people comfortable or helping them feel good on the way to everlasting punishment, without the hope and the design that they see Christ in your good deeds, is not mercy. Mercy must aim to make much of Christ. No one is saved who doesn’t meet and make much of Christ. And not to care about saving is not merciful.  Therefore, it is absolutely essential that Paul put worship before mercy and that he define the Christian life as worshipful before he defines it as merciful."

Amen!  We exist to worship and bring glory to God!

“Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.”

Haggai 1:2

“Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.” Haggai 1:2

I continue with my study of Haggai -  using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  The next chapter of the commentary is entitled Disregarding God Leads to a Lack of Human Flourishing. This commentary chapter outlines 2 divisions with 2 sub-divisions each exploring Haggai 1:2-11. For this morning, my focus is an unassisted review of Haggai 1:2 - the first sub-division.  Here God refers to what the people say with regard to efforts to rebuild the temple.  Of course, we know what is coming next as God is not pleased with the people's lack of effort to rebuild His house.  The temple represents a place of worship, where God's people gather to draw near to Him corporately and to bring glory to His name in prayer, song, fellowship with God's people, and study of His Word.  All of this in service and obedience to God who calls us to love Him with all of our our heart, soul and mind.  God's people choose not to be obedient to the most important commandment - one can't expect things to go well from there.

I continue my study of Zephaniah using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For this morning, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Zephaniah 3:14-15, which is the text for the fifth division for the commentary's chapter on 3:9-20 (six divisions in total). Here the text continues to describe how God restores the faithful remnant of Judah (see post yesterday and text focusing on those "who are left").  God seeks for this remnant to rejoice and exult "with all your heart."  Why?  The text tells us why: (1) God has taken away the consequences of our sin, (2) He has taken away our enemies, (3) He is in our midst, and (4) we shall never again fear evil.  Of course such a message rings true for not just Judah but also all believers!  Excerpts from the commentary on this text:

  • "The appropriate response to the redemptive work of God among His people is to throw a party. This is precisely what God is communicating. What’s more, this is not just a momentary celebration. The understanding here is that this is their new way of life. This is not just a fleeting, volitional choice to “sing for joy” or “shout loudly.” This is a transformation of the heart. Israel was heading toward certain judgment and death, but instead they have inherited the grace of God. There is much to be excited about!"
  • Believers are referred to Hebrews 2:14-15 where the same message is described in the New Testament.
  • This message from Zephaniah serves as a prophecy for Jesus who is described in Matthew 1:23 as Immanuel, "God is with us."
  • We are reminded that while some believe Heaven is ultimately our goal, this is not the case as Heaven is described as a benefit but not the goal.  Reconciliation with God as described in the text today is the goal.

Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.

Ecclesiastes 5

Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few. Ecclesiastes 5:1-2

I continue my study today of Ecclesiastes using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for this book.  Today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Ecclesiastes 5:1-6, which covers the first division of the commentary chapter titled Religion Is Meaningless without Jesus - the first division specifically is referred to in the commentary as Religious Ritual without the Fear of God Is Meaningless.  Here the commentary describes the woeful state of American Christianity, which has become consumer oriented-focusing on the satisfaction of the worshiper vs God who of course should be the object of a worship.  The commentary shares: "religion has become a means to use God for what we really want rather than an experience of standing in awe of the living God."  As the commentary digs into the details of Ecclesiastes 5:1-6, it shares how empty rituals of sacrifice are not pleasing to God - God wants a heart of repentance and trust and faith in Him.  Our church attendance must not be simply out of habit but truly a time of going to God in awe of who He is and being grateful for the amazing grace He has poured out for us.  On the subject of church ritual and sacrifice (i.e. tithing, etc.) God wants us to offer our bodies as a "living sacrifice" (Romans 12:1) as we should do everything for the glory of God.  We are also referred to 1 Samuel 15:22 that describes how God wants obedience to His commands not empty ritual.  The commentary then moves to the topic of prayers and how we are to approach prayer as part of worship.  Pointing to vv2-3, the commentary refers us to Matthew 6:7-8 and shares "[t]he person thinks because of how they pray, what they pray, or how many words they use that God will be favorable toward them. Some people think they must pray in King James language for God to actually listen and answer. Others think they have to be casual and refer to God as “Daddy” to be heard. What you say or how you say it is not the issue. The issue is your heart. But we so often think our heavenly Father is like earthly parents who can be asked at the right time or in the right way and we can get the answer we want."  The commentary concludes for this division's text by exploring vows in vv4-6.  We are warned not to make empty vows with God as it shares: "Solomon says in verse 5 that it is better not to make a vow than to vow and not pay it. Hold your tongue. Keep your mouth shut. One example in our culture where we make vows is marriage. It is better to be single and unmarried than to get married and break your vows. In addition to marriage vows, we make private and public promises to God—like dedicating ourselves that we will raise our children to know and love Jesus, that we will be a better spouse, that we will give to some church campaign, or that we will not lose our temper anymore with our children—but we fail to keep our promises. We dedicate ourselves in front of God and the church to raise our babies right, and we start out so well, but once they grow up and ball games or recitals start happening on Sundays, we get out of church. You make a promise not to yell at your kids on Sunday, but by Wednesday you are tired, and they grate on your nerves so you explode. Solomon says not to let your mouth make you sin and not to tell the messenger it was a mistake to make that vow. The messenger most likely refers to a temple official who ensured vows were fulfilled (Enns, Ecclesiastes, 68)."  Breaking a vow with God angers Him and this is dangerous indeed - see Acts 5 for the story of Ananias and Sapphira as an example of God's wrath for those who do not deal honestly with God.  We should not try and manipulate God but instead revere Him and worship Him with a true and repentant heart that is grateful for His amazing grace.

Yes, God wants us to worship Him in song and praise, to offer heartfelt and authentic prayers, but he also wants us to "be still and know that [He] is God" (Psalm 46:10).

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Matthew 2

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:10-11

I maintain a pause of my study of 1 Corinthians as I continue using DesiringGod.com's Advent devotions where I pick up on Day 10.  Here, John Piper unpacks Matthew 2:10-11 where the magi worship the new born Jesus, and bring Him gifts.  Piper starts by referring us to Acts 17:25 where the scripture is clear that God does not need anything - He is not "served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything."  So these men from the east, the magi - who are not Jews - worship Jesus and offer Him gifts.  Piper's devotion seeks to help us explore why these gifts were offered and the purpose they serve. The devotion states that these are not bribes - pointing us to Deuteronomy 10:17.  Instead, Piper shares that anytime gifts are given to wealthy, self-sufficient people, these gifts echo and intensify "the giver’s desire to show how wonderful the person is. In a sense, giving gifts to Christ are like fasting — going without something to show that Christ is more valuable than what you are going without."  Piper continues by sharing that "[w]hen you give a gift to Christ like this, it’s a way of saying, “The joy that I pursue (notice Matthew 2:10! “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy”) — the joy that I pursue is not the hope of getting rich by bartering with you or negotiating some payment. I have not come to you for your things, but for yourself. And this desire I now intensify and demonstrate by giving up things, in the hope of enjoying you more, not things. By giving to you what you do not need, and what I might enjoy, I am saying more earnestly and more authentically, ‘You are my treasure, not these things.’"  Piper concludes by sharing that it is his prayer that all people in all nations awaken to a desire for Christ Himself as their treasure above all else.

[Y]ou were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.

1 Corinthians 6

[Y]ou were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:20

I continue to lean on DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotion, which today looks at how we are to worship, as worship is biblically defined not just by church worship services, but by all that we do (1 Corinthians 10:31). Eating, drinking, working (see also this post and Ephesians 6:7-8), hobbies, etc. We must remember that as the text today is written, God bought us with a price (His life), we received through grace forgiveness of sins, fullness of life now and for eternity, and as such we should respond through worship - yet not just on Sunday morning.  Every day...every moment. Paul expresses this also in Romans 12:1 where he says "I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship." We exist to glorify God - plain and simple.

Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.

Hebrews 13

Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Hebrews 13:15

I continue my study of Hebrews, and today my focus is Hebrews 13:15-25, and my unaided observations of the text. Use of the word "then" at the start of v15 seeks for us to build on what has already been said in this chapter such that we read this verse as an imperative with the reason already defined in previous verses. The imperative here is to "continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God" - because of what Jesus did for us on the cross (outside the camp - v12) we should follow Christ (v13) and praise Him for what He has done for us.  In v16, we are also exhorted to "do good and to share what [we] have," as God sees these sacrifices as pleasing. V17-19 seek for us to support and encourage church leaders as they "watch over [our] souls." The concluding verses (v20-25) of the chapter include a benediction and final greetings from Paul.  The benediction reminds us that it is God who equips us (v21) to do his will.

By this the Holy Spirit indicates that the way into the holy places is not yet opened as long as the first section is still standing (which is symbolic for the present age). According to this arrangement, gifts and sacrifices are offered that cannot perfect the conscience of the worshiper, but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.

I continue my study of Hebrews, assisted by the commentary Christ Centered Exposition: Exalting Jesus in Hebrews. My focus this morning is Hebrews 9:1-10, and my initial unaided observations of this text.  Here, the text explores how the Levitical priests, first the priest, then the high priest, enter the tent of worship, including the inner section - referred to as the Most Holy Place (v3). The area of question - struggle - for me this morning is v8-10.  These verses describe how "the way into the holy places is not opened as long as the first section is still standing (which is symbolic for the present age)," and this implies how the first covenant and the sacrificial system as outlined in Leviticus remained in place until Jesus death on the cross resulted in a tearing down of this system, allowing direct access to the Most Holy Place or direct access to God for those who believe in Him (see also this post on DesiringGod.com).

And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Mark 14

And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. Mark 14:26

This morning, I pause on my studies of Revelation and Isaiah to listen to today's devotion from Solid Joys from DesiringGod.com. This devotion reflects and meditates on song - of course, how God created it, it's purpose, and it imagines God singing.  Piper quotes 1 Chronicles 15:16 where it describes how King David returns the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem and how David instructs the Levites to "play loudly on musical instruments, on harps and lyres and cymbals, to raise sounds of joy."  The ESV Study Bible indicates that "[t]his marks a turning point in the history of Israel’s worship: the Levites are appointed, under David, to a new ministry of music and praise, which will be conducted in the presence of the ark." In the devotion, Piper states that God is infinitely joyful...because God "has rejoiced from eternity in the panorama of his own perfections reflected perfectly in the deity of his Son."  He then states that God "appointed song for us to release our heart’s delight in him." Amen!  Of course, we exist to worship and glorify God, and this is appropriate because our God is great indeed!

(“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”)

Revelation 15-16

(“Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”) Revelation 16:15

I continue my D-Group's study of Revelation using Stephen Witmer's commentary and study guide.  For this week, the study looks at Revelation 15-16.  For today, I focus on the commentary for these chapters and a summary of key takeaways/applications.  As an element of my post yesterday on the pause between the sixth and seventh bowls of God's wrath, I am reminded that God's words during this pause are a benediction, which my commentary defines as "a prayer for God’s blessing at the end of a letter or a worship service. " We must see Revelation as both a letter and a worship service - full of God's glory, His message to us, and full of praise. John Piper says that all of redemptive history God seeks one thing - worship of Him. For us to be ready, we must prepare our hearts for worship - non-ceasing praise and worship!

This morning, I continued my study of Leviticus using the Christ-Centered Exposition series commentary for this book - starting chapter twenty-three (the final chapter) - Either-Or - covering Leviticus 26-27, looking specifically at the introduction and first theme for the chapter - God Calls Us to Right Worship. Here, the commentary's introduction for the chapter describes a black and white set of commands God gives us to live in obedience or disobedience to Him.  The commentary theme for today then starts with Leviticus 26:1-2 where it commands us to not worship idols or other gods above the one true God (see also Exodus 20) and to observe the Sabbath as a day of rest and to experience corporate worship with other believers at church.
