One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him.

Hebrews 7

One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him. Hebrews 7:9-10

I continue my study of Hebrews, assisted by the commentary Christ Centered Exposition: Exalting Jesus in Hebrews. This morning, my focus is on Hebrews 7:1-10, as I lean on my commentary, and how it unpacks the second division "Melchizedek and Levi," which refers to Hebrews 7:5-10.  While yesterday, my post discussed Melchizedek and Abraham, this morning the text and the associated commentary discusses Melchizedek and Levi.  Here, in the midst of a discussion of how Levi was present and paid tithes to Melchizedek through Abraham, the commentary highlights a broader, and I believe more important point that Melchizedek was not only superior to Abraham, but also to the Levitical priesthood. The commentary emphasizes that this is important because the "Old Testament itself showed that the Levitical priesthood was always meant to give way to something greater. Thus the author [of Hebrews], under the inspiration and authority of the Holy Spirit, weaves together a biblical-theological argument to convince his audience of this fact on the basis of Scripture."  This morning's reading, when combined with yesterday's reading, lays down an important foundation as I pivot to Hebrews 7:11-22 over the next three days where an understanding of Melchizedek informs our understanding of Jesus's priesthood.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are a great High Priest who intercedes on my behalf - thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of how You do this.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me. Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils!

Hebrews 7

See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils! Hebrews 7:4

I continue my study of Hebrews, assisted by the commentary Christ Centered Exposition: Exalting Jesus in Hebrews. This morning, my focus is on Hebrews 7:1-10, as I lean on my commentary, and how it unpacks the first division "Melchizedek and Abraham," which refers to Hebrews 7:1-4. The commentary for this text focuses on how we should understand a little known character - Melchizedek - from the Bible, so we can better understand Jesus, as Jesus is compared to Melchizedek.  Melchizedek is first described as both king and priest: "[o]utside of Jesus and Melchizedek, Scripture identifies no one as both a king and priest. In fact, Israel markedly differentiated the roles of king and priest. No priest in the Old Testament could lawfully act as a king, and no king in the Old Testament could lawfully act as a priest."  The commentary refers to Isaiah 6:1 and 2 Chronicles 26:16-21 where "King Uzziah died in disrepute because he defied God’s law by acting as a priest."  Next, Melchizedek is described as a priest of the Most High God: "[s]hockingly, he is even from outside the tribe of Israel. This is an interesting character indeed." The interaction between Abraham and Melchizedek is then explored and the commentary shares that "the fact that Melchizedek blesses Abraham, the head of the old covenant, is astounding....Genesis 14 and the author of Hebrews show Melchizedek, a non-Israelite king, as a superior blessing an “inferior”...The situation presents Melchizedek, as the one doing the blessing, as the greater of the two figures."  We are then reminded by the commentary that Melchizedek's priesthood is not due to familial descent but to divine ordination, unlike the Levitcal priesthood.  Finally, the commentary wraps for this text by sharing how Melchizedek is described by the author of Hebrews as superior to Abraham - the great patriarch - given how Melchizedek blesses Abraham and is given a tithe by Abraham.

He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever.

Hebrews 7

He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever. Hebrews 7:3

I continue my study of Hebrews, assisted by the commentary Christ Centered Exposition: Exalting Jesus in Hebrews. My focus this morning is Hebrews 7:1-10, and my initial unaided observations of this text. With this text, we return to a discussion of the Great High Priest first started in chapter 4:14 and continuing through chapter 5:10 before a pause where the author of Hebrews warns the readers not to fall away from their faith, followed by an encouragement (starting in chapter 6:9 through the end of the chapter) to hold firm in their faith. The text for today examines the Priestly Order of Melchizedek and how it compares to Levites in their role of high priest.  The text in v3 describes Melchizedek as "without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever." Based on a previous post in my study of Hebrews, I learned about Melchizedek and how, although he does not have prominent role in scripture, the post shares (from the commentary) that Jesus's priesthood "must mean that Jesus’s priesthood, like Melchizedek’s, is born out of the sovereign purposes of God. The order—that is, the nature—of Jesus’s priesthood is of a sovereign order, a sovereign nature. Like Melchizedek, Jesus did not take the honor of priest upon himself; he was sovereignly appointed. And in his appointment and service as high priest, he was exalted above all others."  This morning, in v3 we once again see the connection between Melchizedek and Jesus - as Melchizedek "resembles" Jesus.

So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.”

Hebrews 5

So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” Hebrews 5:5-6

I continue my study of Hebrews, assisted by the commentary Christ Centered Exposition: Exalting Jesus in Hebrews. This morning, I maintain my focus on Hebrews 5:1-10, as I lean on my commentary and explore what the commentary describes as the second division "Our Appointed High Priest," which looks at Hebrews 5:5-6.  For this text, the commentary almost exclusively focuses on v6 where Christ is described by the author of Hebrews as "a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek."  It shares how Melchizedek only showed up in two places in scripture:

  • Genesis 14:17-24: The commentary describes this text: "Melchizedek is a king and yet performs a task not common to kings: offering bread and wine. Genesis then identifies Melchizedek as a priest of God Most High. Thus, in some mysterious way, God appointed a priest from a foreign people unto himself. He then brought this foreign king who was a priest to Abraham, the one with whom God had established his covenant. Melchizedek first blesses Abraham, and Abraham responds by giving him a tenth of everything. Then Melchizedek abruptly disappears."
  • Psalm 110: The commentary describes this text: "This psalm’s immediate fulfillment happened in David’s own kingship, but its ultimate fulfillment came later in David’s line—in the one who sits at the Father’s right hand, Jesus Christ. Given that Melchizedek seemingly has little to do with the messianic nature of this psalm, the inclusion of his name likely would have surprised the original audience. “A priest forever” points to the messianic figure who fulfills this prophecy and distinguishes the order of Melchizedek’s priesthood from other priesthoods. Other priesthoods had a termination date because all other priests died. Death prevented them from serving as priests forever. Jesus Christ, however, on account of his resurrection from the dead, serves as a priest forever. His priesthood knows no end."

The commentary wraps for this text by sharing that Jesus's priesthood "must mean that Jesus’s priesthood, like Melchizedek’s, is born out of the sovereign purposes of God. The order—that is, the nature—of Jesus’s priesthood is of a sovereign order, a sovereign nature. Like Melchizedek, Jesus did not take the honor of priest upon himself; he was sovereignly appointed. And in his appointment and service as high priest, he was exalted above all others."
