Hebrews 7

One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him. Hebrews 7:9-10

I continue my study of Hebrews, assisted by the commentary Christ Centered Exposition: Exalting Jesus in Hebrews. This morning, my focus is on Hebrews 7:1-10, as I lean on my commentary, and how it unpacks the second division "Melchizedek and Levi," which refers to Hebrews 7:5-10.  While yesterday, my post discussed Melchizedek and Abraham, this morning the text and the associated commentary discusses Melchizedek and Levi.  Here, in the midst of a discussion of how Levi was present and paid tithes to Melchizedek through Abraham, the commentary highlights a broader, and I believe more important point that Melchizedek was not only superior to Abraham, but also to the Levitical priesthood. The commentary emphasizes that this is important because the "Old Testament itself showed that the Levitical priesthood was always meant to give way to something greater. Thus the author [of Hebrews], under the inspiration and authority of the Holy Spirit, weaves together a biblical-theological argument to convince his audience of this fact on the basis of Scripture."  This morning's reading, when combined with yesterday's reading, lays down an important foundation as I pivot to Hebrews 7:11-22 over the next three days where an understanding of Melchizedek informs our understanding of Jesus's priesthood.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are a great High Priest who intercedes on my behalf - thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of how You do this.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me. Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.
