I complete my study of Hebrews with a reading of 13:7-25, where we see closing remarks by the author - these remarks include instructions to remember, obey and submit to leaders, to be on guard for false teachings, to seek eternal rewards vs earthly ones, to continually praise God, and to pray.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V8: Jesus Christ and God do not change - see also Malachi 3:6.  He is both eternal and unchanging. V12: Jesus is described as the spotless lamb and final sacrifice through which all of humanity has forgiveness of sin. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv7, 17: God places leaders above us and calls us to submit to their authority and to imitate their faith. These leaders are watching over us and it is of no benefit for us to grumble and complain about them.  V9: There are those who misuse and twist God's Word for their own agenda and benefit (vs that of God) - we need to not just read the Word but understand it - we do so aided by the Holy Spirit, our church, and our brothers and sisters in Christ.  Vv13-14: Believers are called to sacrifice and "bear the reproach [Jesus] endured," because just as He sought to reign from Heaven, we also seek Heaven as our home. Vv15-16: Instead of the animal sacrifices practiced in the Old Testament, God seeks for us to "continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God" (see also Romans 12:1), through worship of His name and love of others (vs focus on self and our own selfish desires).  V18: We are called to pray for leaders, including the author of Hebrews, such that they "act honorably in all things". 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid falling prey to false teachings and grumbling and complaining about church leadership.  Claim the promise that our home is in Heaven and that God is saving place for us and it will be glorious.  Follow the example of Jesus and offer your body as a living sacrifice - living in such a way (loving Him and others) that brings glory to God and draws others to Him. Do good and share what you have.

I continue my study of Hebrews, and in the text today - Hebrews 3:7-19 - the author (speaking to Jewish believers who well understood the Old Testament and its biblical heroes such as Moses) seeks for readers to not suffer the same fate as the first generation of Israelites who were rescued by God and escaped Egypt, but were not able to enter the promise land (God's rest) due to their rebelliousness.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V7 shares how scripture is God-breathed and divinely authored - see also 2 Timothy 3:16.  This verse (and v15) refer to Psalm 95:7-11, where David also warns (see also Hebrews 3:8, 12-13) believers not to miss God's hand and to avoid hardening of hearts and putting God to the test.  We also see God as a living God (v12) - not a distant, unseeing, unaware and uncaring God - if we abide in Him, He lives and works in our hearts (John 15:1-10).  God makes a promise (vv11, 19) - one that we don't to see - that if we don't believe, we cannot enter God's rest - and if you don't this is eternal damnation.   
• What do we learn from the text about people?: When we wander and go astray from God - which we are prone to do - we fail to recognize and see His hand in our lives and then we experience hardness of heart, leading to falling away.  God wired us to live not just in fellowship with Him, but also with other believers and we are encouraged to "exhort one another every day" (v13) to stay close to Him with our spiritual disciplines (study of Word, prayer, etc.). 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid straying from fellowship with Him lest you develop a hardened heart. Claim the promise that God lives in your heart if you abide in Him and He never stops working for good.  Follow the example of Joshua and Caleb who maintained steadfast faith and saw God's hand and were able to enter God's rest. Hold confidence in Him firm until the end.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 12:12-19, where Jesus makes His triumphal entry to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday riding on a donkey.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus' entry fulfilled prophecy per vv14-15 - see Zechariah 9:9.      
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv12-13 shares how the people felt about Jesus as they shouted "hosanna" - with most scholars agreeing that at the least the people praised Jesus, with many scholars going further that the word and its use as a prayer to be saved.  Those shouting hosanna seemed to rightly recognized Jesus as the Promised Messiah.  Yet, the disciples did not at first (compared to the crowds shouting hosanna) see how Jesus fulfilled scriptures to the same extent - see vv16.  This implies that God reveals Himself differently to each person as a means to equip him/her for unique roles and missions He designs.  The disciples seemed to need a different equipping/training - see also Ephesians 2:10.  Vv17-18 shares how those who witnessed Lazarus' resurrection bore witness to Jesus and sought to meet Him when they heard (v12) He was coming to Jerusalem.  In v19, the Pharisees fail to see Jesus for who He is, and continue to be concerned about themselves vs following the most important commandment which is to love God.    
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid not recognizing Jesus for who He is.  Claim the promise that Jesus is Lord and Savior and all scripture points to Him.  Follow the example to praise Him and seek Him as this represents another promise from Jeremiah 29:13.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 10:7-18, where Jesus patiently teaches those listening to Him as He refers to Himself as the Good Shepherd and those who follow Him - His sheep.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus once again reinforces His authority by sharing "[t]ruly, truly" in v7.  Those listening did not understand what Jesus was saying in vv1-6, so Jesus has to reinforce that despite how some may not understand, He is sharing Truth because He is Lord of All and all scripture is God-breathed and perfect (2 Timothy 3:16).  Building on what I posted a couple of days ago, no one is saved (and find pasture or provision, including rest) except through Jesus as He is the door to salvation (vv7, 9).   In contrast to Jewish leadership and Satan, Jesus comes to give life and to give it abundantly both now (freedom from sin) and for eternity in Heaven through salvation (v10). Jesus is Good at being our leader v11 because He sacrifices Himself for His people.  Those who follow the Good Shepherd know Him and He knows them just as the Father and the Son know each other (v15).  Vv17-18 shares how the Father loves the Son because He not only sacrifices His life for God's people but also is able to rise again (Easter).  Jesus does those of His own accord (ability) and authority because He has been granted authority by the Father.   
• What do we learn from the text about people?: God's people in Israel are the sheep but the Jewish leadership who led have not led well and are referred to as thieves and robbers (v8), serving only themselves and not following God's instructions for how to lead.  In particular, the thief (Satan) is a false god and following him leads to eternal condemnation (v10).  There are many who claim to lead or claim be a or are seen as a deity, but there is only One True God and Good Shepherd (vv12-13). V16 shares how there are others in His fold but not in "this fold" (v16).  This refers to how the believing Jews are of this fold but soon Jesus will be sending out the disciples to the Gentiles and to all parts of the world as part of the Great Commission and these that are not of this fold will listen to Him.  Jesus is the Good Shepherd over all who believe and follow Him - one flock and one shepherd. 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid following false gods and evil influences.  Claim the promise of abundant (and eternal life) through Jesus.  Follow the example of the sheep who know the Good Shepherd and His voice.  Follow and please Jesus as Your #1 priority.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 10:1-6, Jesus continues to teach - here His focus is on His role between Himself (the Good Shepherd) and those who follow Him - His sheep.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus emphasizes His authority as He begins to teach, starting with "[t]ruly, truly."  He then starts to describe His role with those who follow Him - He is both the sheepfold door and the Good Shepherd (v1-3a) who serves as the only way to God - this is similarly described in John 14:6 where Jesus shares that "no one comes to the Father except through me."  One cannot be saved unless they believe in Jesus.  Matthew 7:13-14 also shares how this path to salvation through Jesus is a narrow gate - if we seek an easier path, either through the wide gate or by climbing in "by another way" as described in v1, one cannot be saved but instead will be eternally condemned. Followers of the Good Shepherd/Jesus know Jesus' voice (v3-4) - which implies that we seek Him and then listen to Him as He reveals Himself to us. Jesus knows His followers (He is Our Creator), He leads them (lamp onto our feet - Psalm 119:105), and they follow Him (v4). Jesus' followers are able to distinguish between Him and false gods who claim to be truth (v5).   
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Everyone is led by something/someone and from a spiritual perspective - they are led either through a wide gate that leads to destruction or through a narrow gate that leads to life to the full now and for eternity.  Those listening to Jesus (including His disciples but also others such as the Jews/Pharisees per v19), did not understand.  There is often text that we don't understand from scripture - this is why we need to continue to listen to Jesus (and His appointed messengers such as pastors) and it is OK to struggle/wrestle with God and ask Him to reveal Himself to us and bless us (Genesis 32:22-32 - see this post). 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Do not seek the wide gate or to climb into the sheepfold by going around the door.  Do not follow strangers' voices or false gods - only Jesus.  Claim the promise that Jesus knows you, loves you, and leads you into green pastures (Psalm 23), cares for you, and ultimately saves you.  Follow the example of those who enter the sheepfold through Jesus-the narrow gate and door of the sheepfold. Follow Jesus out of the sheepfold - listen to Him by doing daily to scripture for His care and feeding.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 7:40-52, where we see the reactions of people, including from Jewish leadership, to Jesus' teaching on the last day (the great day) of the Feast of Booths.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Nothing can stop God's plan - although the Jewish leadership sent temple guards/officers to arrest Jesus, "no one laid hands on him" (v44).  Once again, although Jesus did go to Judea from Galilee after initially indicating He would not, His statement that His time had not yet come (for His arrest, trial, crucifixion, and resurrection) remains true (as all of His statements are true as He is Truth) - see also vv6,8.  There are no contradictions here just God accomplishing His same plan in a different way.   
• What do we learn from the text about people?: There will always be people that do not believe that Jesus is who He says He is.  Here, it is the Jewish leadership and some in the crowd that heard Jesus speak - see vv40-43,47-49,52.  The temple guard/officers clearly see that Jesus is different than other men - see v46.  So does Nicodemus (vv50-51) - see John 3:1-15 where Jesus clearly left a mark.  
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid seeking your own glory as the Jewish leadership does when they sought to arrest Jesus.  Follow the example of the temple guards/officers and Nicodemus to truly examine and learn about Jesus (and ultimately believe). Claim the promise that Jesus is the Bread of Life, Living Water and that if we believe in Him that Living Water will flow from our heart.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 6:60-71, where we see Jesus turning His attention to the disciples who are struggling to comprehend Jesus' words in response to the Jews vv41-59.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: God wants us to follow Him even when we have doubts and questions about what He says...even when it is scary what He is asking us to do. Once again we should not grumble about (or to) God but do His will.  V65 reinforces how we are to lean into Him to help us with our unbelief - see also Mark 9:24 where the father of a son with a spirit that makes him mute" cries out to Jesus "help my unbelief." It is only Him who gives us faith - Ephesians 2:8-9. Stay close to God - maintain a daily practice of scripture study and prayer. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: It's not just the Jews who struggle to comprehend Jesus' words that He is the Bread of Life and that to abide and follow Him you must "feed on [His] flesh and drink [His] blood" (vv53-58).  The disciples struggle, sharing that "[t]his is a hard saying; who can listen to it?" (v60).  The Gospel message trips up many people - see also the story of the rich young ruler from Mark 10:17-31, Matthew 19:16-30, and Luke 18:18-30.  Ultimately, there are those who cannot overcome their questions and doubts about the Gospel message, what it requires of them, and do not believe - it is these who are not believers anyway, they fall away and are condemned eternally - like we see with those who fall away in v66 and also with Judas in vv70-71.  In contrast, Peter has faith, sharing that he will not leave or betray Jesus, sharing "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God (vv68-69).  
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid grumbling and complaining about what Jesus says or wants us to do, claim the promise that every word of God is perfect, follow the example of Peter who has nowhere else to go and is desperate for Jesus, abide in Him through daily study of His Word and through prayer.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 6:52-59 - where we continue to see a back and forth between the Jews (Jewish elders/leadership) and Jesus about who Jesus is and His authority.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Once again, emphasizing His authority (sent by the Father - v57) using the words "truly, truly," Jesus shares that we must "feed" on His body and blood to abide in Him and to have eternal life.  Believers now have the benefit of knowing what is coming - Jesus initiating a New Covenant based on His broken body and spilled blood (Last Supper - see also Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:14-20, and 1 Corinthians 11:23-26), followed by Jesus' death and resurrection.
• What do we learn from the text about people?: The Jews continue to question the identity of Jesus and His authority.  They believe in Jesus' literal words (thinking He is crazy for saying that believers must eat His flesh - v52) vs looking at the broader context of all of His Word (all scripture) as a means to understand God's message to us.       
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We must avoid interpreting scripture in isolation from the entirety of scripture. We must follow the example of the Berean Jews from Acts 17:11 who examined all of scripture to test their knowledge of scripture.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 6:16-21 - where Jesus walks on water. Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. This same account of Jesus walking on water is found in Matthew 14:22-33 and Mark 6:45-52.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: V17 shares that Jesus "had not yet come to the [disciples]" who had left the site of the feeding of the five thousand, gotten in a boat and were headed across the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum (see this map location 5 and its proximity to Capernaum).  Going back to v15 from yesterday's text, we see Jesus remaining on the mountain by Himself where He had fed the five thousand.  Jesus of course is not spending time with Himself for "self-care."  Jesus spends much time alone - to be in prayer and in fellowship with the Father - see the accounts of this story in Matthew and Mark, and also this post.  When Jesus does connect again with the disciples, He is walking on water and calming both the water and the disciples - who were frightened by the sight of Jesus performing this miracle - the disciples (per Matthew and Mark) thought it was a ghost until Jesus gets closer to them. Jesus tells the disciples to not be afraid and the disciples then gladly take Jesus into the boat.  
• What do we learn from the text about people?: The disciples reaction to Jesus' walking on water stems from an incomplete understanding of who Jesus is.  At this point in the Gospel story, Jesus continues to teach the disciples and reveal Himself to them.  While no believer will have a complete understanding of who Jesus is until he/she meets Jesus face to face upon glorification (going to Heaven), we are nonetheless encouraged to get to know Jesus intimately through daily study of His Word and prayer.  We are then more able to recognize Jesus when He is at work. See also Romans 12:2 we are told to renew our minds so that we can recognize Him and do His will.        
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid fear and anxiety.  Claim the promise that God will take care of you either in this life or in Heaven - either way He has you sealed and covered. Follow the example of Jesus to spend time alone in the Word and in prayer.  Trust Jesus.

I continue my study of John, and today, I unpack John 4:31-37 using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the passage about God?: God wants us to see how our most important provision (above food, water, etc.) is the Word and to do the will of God.   God's will for us is to the share the gospel message to the world (Great Commission) and disciple others to bear fruit for the glory of God.  We all have a role in the Great Commission - some will sow, some will reap. 
• What do we learn from the passage about people?: The disciples focused on earthly concerns and we can expect that of those who do not know God.  Even those who know God grow too comfortable with the world (including myself from time to time).  
• Is there anything from the passage God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid,Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We should avoid growing too comfortable with the world but instead understand and focus on doing everything for the glory of God as we exist for the glory of God. Claim the promise that Jesus provides our daily bread and provision.  Follow Jesus' example to do the will of God.  Obey God's call to play a role in the Great Commission to "make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:20).

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, my focus is per the commentary, the second division of the text from Mark 14:26-52 - vv32-42.  

• Using the Sword Bible Study Method focusing just on the text for today - vv32-42: (1) God in the text: Jesus prays (vv32, 35, 36, 39) and he encourages Peter to pray (v38); He is greatly distressed, troubled and sorrowful (vv33, 34) "even to death" and He fell on the ground as a result of his emotions that brought Him to a point of obvious significant turmoil; He admonishes the disciples for falling asleep and not watching as He instructed them - alluding to how we are to be alert and not fall into temptation (v38); (2) people in the text: disciples fail to heed Jesus' instructions to watch and pray; (vv37, 40, 41); (3) Sins to avoid, promises to claim, examples to follow, and commands to obey: We should obey Jesus' words to watch and pray v38 as "[t]he spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Excerpts from the commentary's second (of three) division: 

• The title of the second division (vv32-42) per the commentary is "The King Would Agonize over His Passion Alone." 
• "This is the third and final time Mark records our Lord praying alone (cf. 1:35; 6:46). Each occasion was a time of significant importance, but none more than this one."  
• "In spite of the exceptional trauma of the moment and the certain future that lay ahead, He trusted in God as His loving Father and in His will. What’s more, the “cup” that He prayed might be removed was not the physical pain He would endure endure on the cross. Indeed many Christian martyrs have gone to their death with thanksgiving and joy with no evidence whatsoever that they wished to avoid the hour of their martyrdom. No, the cup that so distressed and troubled Him was the spiritual suffering He would endure as He would bear the sins of the world and drink to the last drop the fierce wrath of God as our substitute."  
• "Gethsemane was “hell” for Jesus, but [we should be] so thankful He went through it. You see, if there is no Gethsemane, there is no Calvary. It there is no Calvary, there can be no empty tomb. And if there is no empty tomb, there is only hell for us."

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Mark 8:27-38.  Excerpts from the commentary's introduction for the entirety of the text and for the first (of three) division (vv27-30):

• The main idea for the entirety of the text is: "The normal Christian life involves dying to self that we may find life in Christ."
• Quoting David Platt, the commentary shares:  "[w]e American Christians have a way of taking the Jesus of the Bible and twisting him into a version of Jesus that we are more comfortable with. A nice middle-class American Jesus. A Jesus who doesn’t mind materialism and would never call us to give away everything we have. A Jesus who is fine with nominal devotion that does not infringe on our comforts."  
• "This text will provide the answer to three crucial questions: Who is Jesus? What did He come to do? What does He expect of you? It is the beginning of the “Great Discipleship Discourse” (8:31–10:52), in which three times Jesus predicts His passion (8:31-33; 9:30-32; 10:32-34). Immediately following each time, He instructs them concerning true discipleship and what it means to truly follow Him because they just do not get it!"
• "[Jesus] explains what the normal Christian life looks like and what it means to follow a King who came to die and serve, who calls His followers to die and serve as well." 
• For the first division, the title is: "You Must Know and Personally Confess Who Jesus Is."
• "Jesus takes the Twelve north for a time of private instruction. Caesarea Philippi is an unlikely location for the first human proclamation of Jesus as the Messiah. It represents the outer regions of paganism, idolatry, and hostility to the Hebrew faith. We are at a crucial turning point. As Jesus brought gradual physical sight to the blind man of Bethsaida (8:22-26), He will now bring gradual spiritual sight to the disciples concerning who He is and what kind of Messiah He will be." 
•  The commentary emphasizes that as Jesus asks the disciples who He is, this is a question all believers must respond to with the only acceptable answer.  He is Messiah: God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 
• Peter responds accurately, yet later in this chapter Peter is rebuked for setting his mind on things of man vs of God.  
• We are encouraged to "[p]ersonally, publicly, and even proudly declare your allegiance to Jesus proclaiming He is the Son of God, the Messiah, the One and Only Savior of the world."

We must also remember that a critical part of developing this allegiance is to read and study God's Word.  John 1:1 shares how from the very beginning  "the Word was God."  We can attend church on Sundays but this is not enough.  We must develop a hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6) and this is accomplished by reading and studying God's Word.  Romans 12:2 highlights how God renews our mind and sets our minds on the things of God vs man and the world.

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, I focus on an unassisted review of Mark 6:45-56, which is the text for the next chapter of the commentary. Observations of the text based on the Sword Bible Study Method: 

• What do we learn from the passage about God?: V46 Jesus makes time to pray as it is a priority - He knew the disciples wanted more time with Him and that the crowds following Him sought more time with Him.  Jesus was a man very much in demand...He never turned away those in need, yet at the same time He made time to pray. V48 and 51 Jesus is all powerful, and He is able to walk on water and control the weather - we can take comfort in knowing that anything is possible through God. V52 God hardens and softens hearts at His discretion - we are urged to share our testimony and the gospel but it is God alone who saves.  V56 Jesus meets the needs of humanity as He heals - not just physically but spiritually.     
• What do we learn from the passage about people?: V50: God's power can be terrifying - we should be drawn into the comforting arms of Him for refuge.  V52: For many, miracles are insufficient to move people to a greater understanding of God...Jesus' feeding of the five thousand earlier in Mark 6 should have certainly been sufficient to see that God was at work but the text shares that the disciples did not understand and their hearts were hardened. For those who love and believe in Him, all things work together for good - Romans 8:28.  
• Is there anything from the passage God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid,Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We should make time to pray, we should see God's power and in reverent fear be drawn close to Him to love and obey Him.  We should know that God heals.

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Mark 6:1-5, which is the text for the next chapter of the commentary - which offers three divisions for this text. Excerpts from the commentary's second (of three) division (vv3-4): 

• The commentary's title for the second division is "When You Consider Jesus, Are You Offended?"
• Those from Jesus's hometown in Nazareth could not grasp His true identity.  The commentary notes that "Jesus’ teachings and miracles do not automatically produce faith." We are referred to 1 Corinthians 1:23 where Paul notes that Christ crucified serves as a "stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles."  
• "In spite of overwhelming evidence [the Nazarenes] will not believe He is the Christ, the Son of God....They knew Him but could not explain Him, so they rejected Him. His hometown, His relatives, even His own household cast their ballot against Him....Sometimes we spend so much time with someone that we no longer appreciate them. For those of us raised in a Christian environment, this is certainly an ever-present danger we must guard against. In a sense we should never get comfortable with Jesus. His goal is not to make us comfortable. His goal is to bring us to repentance and faith, humbly falling at His feet confessing Him as Lord and God. He is not your homeboy, your buddy, or your soul mate. He is not your genie in a bottle obligated to grant your every wish." 

The commentary for the text emphasizes Jesus' identity, and that we should never lose sight of who He is - the One True God.  It is wholly appropriate then that out of reverent fear we rush to Him as our refuge.  He saves!  We must also worship Him with the entirety of our lives (vs animal sacrifice) and seek renewing of the mind through a daily lifelong relationship with Jesus where we go to Him daily in study and reflection on His Word as He renews our minds and makes us more like Him.  As He makes us more like Him, He brings about greater and greater obedience to His will (Romans 12:1-2).

• "The crowds at Peter’s house came for the miracles. Now, apparently, they want more. The call to repent and believe the gospel (1:15) was not on their spiritual radar. Like so many today, they wanted a Jesus of their liking, a Jesus who would perform miracles and fit into their agenda."
• "Neither the crowds nor the disciples understood why He had come into the world. But He knew! Jesus came to preach, to herald, to proclaim the gospel of salvation, a message that is both by Him and about Him. Indeed, He is the gospel! But sadly, the crowds missed Him. God had only one Son, and He made Him a preacher. No pastor is worthy of the office who does not preach the Word. No church will prosper spiritually without the preaching of the Word."
• "Jesus went throughout all Galilee, preaching the gospel and casting out demons. He did this out of a life of prayer. Prayer and preaching is a one-two punch that cannot be defeated. This is how the kingdom marches on anywhere and anytime."  

For those who are gifted as teachers, it is call that they should follow, but with great humility and responsibility.  Those who teach must constantly be learning and allowing God to work through their gift of teaching.  For believers, we need corporate worship to hear this teaching, and we should be striving to learn and grow through our own study of the Word and through Bible studies where we participate with other believers to sharpen one another - Proverbs 27:17.

• "Jesus has just had an extraordinary day of teaching the Scriptures, casting out demons, and healing the sick—all on the Sabbath. He has served the hurting late into the evening, well past sundown (1:32). And even though the day is drawing to a close, there is more to be done to enable the kingdom to advance against the powers of darkness and evil. In this text Jesus exhibits the strategy by which God continues to advance His purposes."
• The title for the first division - The Kingdom Advances Through Prayer - is the first of three reasons (divisions) outlined by the commentary to help us better understand how Jesus' advances his purposes.
• "There are three prayers of Jesus in Mark: The first is found here at the beginning, when His ministry is being defined. The second comes in the middle of the Gospel, when the people wanted to “take Him by force to make Him King” (John 6:15). The final prayer is near the conclusion, in Gethsemane, asking the Father to “take this cup away” (Mark 14:32-42). These are critical moments."

• "Peter and those with him sent out a search party. Apparently the crowds had returned for more miracles. Peter’s words are almost a rebuke: “Everyone’s looking for You!” In other words, “What are You doing here? This is not where You should be! You need to be with the crowds! We are building a following. Things are beginning to happen. You do not have time to be alone and pray!” Oh, how we are so much like Peter, not understanding the ways of God and how His kingdom will come! Yes, there will be healings and exorcisms. But there must also be prayer."   

Life gets busy.  Today, we can claim that life is busier than its ever been, yet this is not true.  Life has always been hard and busy - and today we have modern conveniences that for many remove obstacles/excuses to spiritual life - such as a Bible on our smartphones.  Slowing down to spend time with God in study of His Word and in prayer is essential.  See also this article from DesiringGod.com on slowing down.

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, I focus on an unassisted review of Mark 1:35-45, which is the text for the next chapter of the commentary.  My observations from the text using the Sword Bible study method:

• What do we learn about God: Prayer is a priority as v35 shares that the very first thing Jesus does once He rises "very early in the morning, while it was still dark," is prayer.  Jesus also prayed by Himself.  While corporate and group prayer with our brothers and sisters in Christ is encouraged, Jesus seeks for us to avoid praying like the hypocrites who seek to be seen by others as "religious" - see Matthew 6:5-7.  Teaching God's Word is a priority - see v38 where Jesus shares that "this is why I came out."  He taught throughout Galilee (v39).  Compassion, and love and service for others was also a priority as Jesus continued to both physically and spiritually heal those who came to Him - see vv39-42 (see also Matthew 20:28 and Mark 10:45).  Jesus demonstrated both compassion and understanding of the Old Testament laws that specified only the priests could "pronounce" a leper clean and able to rejoin his community after periods of isolation (see Leviticus 13). Isolation is not good for man and we are designed for community and one another - vv43-44.  
• What do we need to obey: Jesus seeks for us to pray - as prayer is how we communicate with God and demonstrate our utter dependence on Him.  We claim the promise that prayer is powerful - James 5:16-18. As already mentioned we must follow Jesus' example of prayer. We also must teach the Good News according to our roles - this includes parents and heads of households.  
• What do we learn about people: People need Jesus as He promises healing, both physically and spiritually.  We must acknowledge that while our physical healing may not occur now, believers know in Heaven all will be healed - see Revelation 21:4.  The need for Jesus is desperate as v45 mentions that even in "desolate places...people were coming to [Jesus] from every quarter."    

Mark 1:45 stands out this morning as I reflect and attempt to more fully understand where Jesus was in these desolate places and the people He encountered.  This article from DesiringGod.com shares an insight how Jesus swaps roles as the leper rejoins his community while Jesus enters desolation.  Jesus loves us so much that He takes on our sin and shame - to the point of death on the cross.

• Believers are encouraged to "fish for people" by proclaiming the Good News
• There are four components of Jesus' message: "(1) [t]he time is fulfilled, (2) the kingdom of God is near, (3) repent, and (4) believe in the gospel."
• "With the appearance of the Messiah-King, the “kingdom of God” has drawn near. In the person of Jesus Christ, men are confronted head-on with the kingdom—the reign of God. What should be our response? Jesus gives His hearers two commands."
• The first command is to repent, which is "to change [one's] mind leading to a change in behavior."  Of course, we must turn towards God.
• The second command is to believe.  Repentance is complemented by belief - this is how we turn towards God. This turn towards God is not a one-time event but a "life altering change" as we become a new creation. "[a] King has arrived who rightly demands that we follow and radically obey Him. This is the unchanging and uncompromising message and vision of the eternal kingdom of God."  

As the commentary implies, this message of repent and believe requires something not just of a new believer, but all believers over the course of their entire life.  Despite being "born again" (aka regeneration), we continue to have sin until glorification when we meet Jesus face-to-face in Heaven.  On a daily basis, we must go to God to continue a work in us through sanctification.  Sanctification only works if we remain and abide in Him - see also John 15:1-8 and this post from John Piper on DesiringGod.com.

I continue my study of The Character of Jesus.  For this morning, I focus on chapter 6: The Reasonableness of Jesus where I highlighted in my Kindle version the following excerpts:

• "There is a widespread impression, especially among young people of a certain age, that Jesus is unreasonable, and that Christianity is a religion which constantly makes war on reason. Young men sometimes say, "I do not want to join the church because I want to use my reason." How strange such language when Jesus from first to last pleads for the use of the reason. Christianity is the one religion of the world which demands the continuous and daring exercise of the intellect. Men often think they are using their reason when in fact they are exercising their prejudices or are suffering from paralysis of the brain."
• "If men want to know whether Christianity is reasonable or not, why do they not read the Gospels? They are short and can be read through at least once a week, and yet men go right on refusing to read the Gospels — the one source of all authentic information as to what the Christian religion really is. Many think nothing of reading a novel of four hundred pages who stagger under the task of reading the four Gospels. It is just such persons who like to talk about the unreasonableness of Christianity. Why not be reasonable? Christianity has but one authoritative volume. Why not read it ?"
  
•  "In order to expose the folly of men, Jesus had the habit of asking questions."
• "His attitude from first to last is the attitude of God as pictured by Isaiah. He was always saying, 'Come, now, let us reason together.'" See Isaiah 1:18.
  
•  Jesus saw Old Testament ceremonial law as having "no reason....It was utterly formal and deadening and stupid."
•  Jesus says if you want to understand the Christian life, then work at it. If you desire to know the truth, then live it. This is common sense. How else could one find the truth of a religion if he did not work at it ? If you want to learn to speak Italian, you do not simply think about it, or read about it, but you go to work on it. It requires a deal of work, but no matter. You cannot learn a language without making mistakes, and the only thing to do is to keep on working. Just so is it with the Christian life. Men imagine they can become Christians by thinking about it, or by reading about it, or by hearing a preacher talk about it. How absurd! You can never become a Christian until you are willing to work at it. Are you willing to begin now?"
  

There are many a man who at first scorned (or at least dismissed) Christ and the Gospel, but upon further investigation repented and believed in Him.  Lee Strobel is one such figure, and he is one of countless others. Acts 17 describes the Bereans (not necessarily ardent skeptics) - a group of Jews who heard Paul and Silas share the Gospel on Paul's second missionary journey.  They eagerly studied what Paul and Silas shared to "test" the veracity of the Gospel.  God wants us to do the same and to use our power of reason - to test that our own experience of the Good News is what it says it is. For me, my experience is that the more I read and study God's Word, the more I am convicted all of it is not just reasonable, true, but  truly the Word of God and in the Word contains the power of God.  Read the Gospels and see for yourself!

I continue my study of the last four books of the Old Testament, having already covered Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and most of Malachi.  My study leans on the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series volume which covers these books. This morning I continue with Malachi 4:1-6, focusing on a commentary-assisted review of 4:4.  Excerpts from the commentary's third division for the text 4:1-6:

• Remembering the Law as a Means of Sustaining Present Obedience: We have not only Malachi 4:4, but we also have scripture elsewhere that emphasizes how we are to know, love and follow God as the commentary refers us to Joshua 1:7-9 and Psalm 1:1-3.  These verses provide a "roadmap to success" regardless of what role you play.  Success, of course, is not measured in riches but in terms of obedience to God and how God blesses those who trust and follow Him.   Psalm 1:4 shares how the wicked, those who do not know, fear and follow God are doomed to destruction. 
  

Believers must read, study, meditate on and apply the Word to their lives.  As we (with the help of the Holy Spirit) do these things, God blesses us by (not exhaustive list):

• making us more like Him - He furthers the sanctification process.  The sanctification process reinforces itself as the more we become like Him, the more we desire Him and He increasingly becomes our greatest treasure.
• driving greater obedience to His Word which in turn pleases God; this is of course important because we are His creation and we exist to glorify Him.
