I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today - Numbers 32 - where the people of Reuben and Gad petition Moses to occupy land east of the Jordan River, an alternative to entering the Promised Land.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

• What do we learn from the text about God?: God often turns us over to our earthly desires and sin as a means to discipline or chasten His people (see also Romans 1:24-28, Psalm 81:11-12, Acts 7:42).  God's will was to bring all of His people out of Egypt and into the Promised Land, and He would lead the people in battle to overcome those who inhabited the land.  In the text today, the people of Reuben and Gad propose an alternative to remain east of the Promised Land because they see that this land was good for their livestock - vv1,4.  Moses, speaking on behalf of God, initially rebukes - see vv6-15 - the people of Reuben and Gad, but they share in vv16-19 that they will not abandon the mission to work with the other tribes of Israel to conquer the Promised Land, and Moses relents to the request of the people of Reuben and Gad - v33.    
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Very often we, just as the people of Reuben and Gad did, seek to bend God's will in our direction, failing to completely trust and surrender to His plan. Although God, through Moses, allowed for this with the people of Reuben and Gad, we should remind ourselves that God seeks complete dependence and obedience to His will - see also this search in scripture for the string "just as the LORD commanded."  Jesus did not propose anything to the Father short of a brutal beating and crucifixion...He simply said in Luke 22:42 "not my will, but yours, be done."
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid seeking to bend God's direction and will to suit your own desires and agenda.  Claim the promise that God's will is "good and acceptable and perfect" (Romans 12:2) and that obedience to Him is not burdensome (1 John 5:3).  Follow the example of Jesus and follow the Father's will completely. Abide in, trust, follow Him.

Numbers 23

I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today - Numbers 23:1-12 - we see Balaam carefully taking a cue from God regarding what He should say, yet Balak does not like the message delivered by his hired pagan prophet through whom God speaks.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

• What do we learn from the text about God?: God truth is eternal.  He made a promise to Abraham that his nation (Israel) would be blessed, and we know from scripture that God's truth is eternal because He reigns over all (has the capacity to deliver on His promises), and all of His promises are kept (2 Corinthians 1:20).  We can rest in God's Word and His promises.  
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Balak does not like God's Word and when people like Balak are challenged with Truth, they often seek their own will and unfortunately God's will is not to be thwarted.  Similarly, we should not be afraid to proclaim Truth.  Peter and John, in the face of arrest and persecution for boldly sharing the gospel after Pentecost, exclaim "we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard (Acts 4:20)."  
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid denying Truth and seeking your own will counter to God's explicit desires and commands.  Claim the promise that God is faithful and His Word is eternal.  Follow the example of Peter and John who boldly proclaim the gospel.  Share the gospel.

I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today - Numbers 20:14-21 - Moses seeks approval from the king of Edom to pass through his kingdom on the way to the Promised Land.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

• What do we learn from the text about God?: While some scholars highlight the text as fulfilling prophecy of Esau's descendants (Edomites) living "by [the] sword" (Genesis 27:40), core to this message is how God is at work in Israel - that God had already punished Israel earlier in Numbers 14:33-34 for their rebelliousness and this punishment resulted in forty more years in the wilderness.  We should note that in the text, Moses sent messengers to the king of Edom (v14), and it is implied that Moses did not consult God nor did God direct Moses to seek approval for passage through Edom.   
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Many, myself included, have made decisions without consulting God and it does not end well, particularly when we know God has other plans.  We should recognize that all of our lives are in His hands, His plans cannot be thwarted, and His plan is perfect and good.  See also Proverbs 3:5-6, 16:9, Psalm 37:23-24, Jeremiah 10:23, and Romans 8:28.  Seek Him and His guidance - in other words abide in Him and we will bear fruit (John 15:1-10).
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid decisions that do not center on God's will for your life - seek His will (Romans 12:2). Claim the promise that if we abide in Him, He will abide in us and we will bear fruit and it will be good. Follow the example of Jesus who sought the Father's will and not His own. Abide in Him.

Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the LORD is with us; do not fear them.” Numbers 14:7-9

I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today - Numbers 14:1-12 - we see the people of Israel rebel against God and His wishes to enter the promised land, despite how it is occupied and fortified.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

• What do we learn from the text about God?: God is full of righteous anger in vv11-12 as the people grumble and rebel against his desire to take the promised land God has given the people.  
• What do we learn from the text about people?: The people of Israel cry, weep, and grumble once again against Moses and Aaron (and God) - vv1-4.  They are in fear because of the reports of the other spies who have reported back that although the promised land "flows with milk and honey" and fruit, the inhabitants are strong and their cities fortified (vv13:27-29).  Clearly Moses and Aaron are frustrated and desperate - seeking to calm the people from their fear.  Two of the spies appointed by God - Joshua and Caleb - exhort the people (once again) to be of good courage and to not fear as "the Lord is with us" (v9).  As the people moved to stone Joshua and Caleb - God steps in (vv11-12).   
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid grumbling, complaining and rebelling against God (including His appointed leaders).  Claim the promise that if God is with/for us, who can be against us (Romans 8:31). Follow the example of Caleb and Joshua were of good courage.  Trust God.

I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today - Numbers 13:1-20 - God gives Moses instructions to send men into Canaan, the land God promised Abraham and his descendants - they were to scout out the land and its inhabitants.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

• What do we learn from the text about God?: God often tests us by giving us challenges that without a doubt require us to lean wholly on Him.  This is one of those challenges - yet the challenge has yet to unfold.  For now, God is asking spies to scout the land. Moses gives the spies, including Joshua (originally named Hoshea), specific instructions as laid out in vv17-20.  His final charge is to be courageous and to "bring some of the fruit of the land."  God wants us to follow His will for our lives and to be courageous.  God knows what is ahead - He does not need this scouting the report, He needs Israel (us) to be courageous.  
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Each of the men sent to spy were chiefs of their tribes (v2), so leaders are expected to demonstrate courage as an example for the rest of Israel. 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid seeing God's instructions as burdensome or worrisome - as God is with us just as He we was with Israel in the wilderness.  Claim the promise that we can never be separated from God's love even as He tests us with challenging tasks.  Follow the example of Joshua to be courageous.  Follow God's will regardless of the challenge.

I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today, Numbers 9:15-23, we see the people of Israel following the Lord in the wilderness as He gives them direction over the tabernacle as He provides a cloud by day and fire by night.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

• What do we learn from the text about God?: God was with Israel as the camped and moved in the wilderness - over the tabernacle as a cloud by day and fire by night - v16.  The cloud and the fire served as God direction for them - if it rested over the tabernacle they remained in camp - v18.  When the cloud lifted, they set out - v17.  Seven times in the text we see Israel following the command of the Lord to either set out or remain in camp - vv18 (2x), 20 (2x), and 23 (3x).  The duration of how long the cloud remained over the tabernacle did not matter - regardless of how they felt about remaining in camp, they "kept the charge of the Lord, at the command of the Lord by Moses" (v23).  Such as true for believers today and key for them to understand how God alone provides this direction is the extent to which we abide in Him and allow Him to direct our steps.  See John 15:5, Romans 12:2, Psalm 37:23, Proverbs 3:5-6, 16:9, 20:24, and Jeremiah 10:23.
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Believers should understand that God holds our lives in His hands and that we exist to glorify Him.  We are very often tempted to take matters into our own hands when instead we need to lean into Him and to pray for His guidance to direct our steps. Even in waiting, God is at work - always. 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid taking matters into your own hands.  Claim the promise that God has a plan for you that is hopeful and good (Jeremiah 29:11, Romans 8:28). Follow the example of Christ who remained in and followed God's will.  Keep God's charge.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 21:15-19, where we see Jesus restore Peter from the sin of his denial.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus asks Peter three times whether he loves Him - in contrast to Peter's denial of Jesus three times before the rooster crows (see Matthew 26, Mark 14, Luke 22, and John 18) as Peter responds yes three times - text recognized as Jesus restoring Peter. Jesus offers second (and third, etc.) chances as He forgives.  Jesus is also reinforcing His role of Good Shepherd (see John 10:1-18) and charging Peter with taking on this same role, to feed young (lamb) and old (sheep) believers. Jesus then shares - emphasizing His authority to make such statements prophecy of how Peter will die, encouraging Peter to follow Him.    
• What do we learn from the text about people?:  Jesus offers Peter a second opportunity to follow Him and most scholars recognize that Peter did indeed die on the cross - but he insisted that he hang on the cross by his feet as he felt unworthy to die in the same manner as Jesus (see this Bible dictionary post).  There is a cost to following Jesus.  He wants us to proclaim the Gospel, and Truth - to all corners of the world, and in many of these places this will be costly, even to the point of physical harm or death.  
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid not following Jesus in the mission He gives you.  Claim the promise that He is with is - always.  Follow Jesus (and Peter's) example to do the will of the Father.  Follow Jesus.

John 20:17-18

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 20:11-18, where we see Jesus appear to Mary Magdalene after the resurrection.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus cares for His disciples as He consoles Mary.  Yet, even as Mary seeks to ensure Jesus' body is cared for (v15), Jesus reminds us that He will be ascending to the Father and this is His mission and the Father's will - it must happen according to plan. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Mary is distraught that Jesus' body is apparently gone but encounters two angels inside the tomb, and then Jesus appears behind her.  She is initially not aware that it is Jesus with whom she is talking - vv13-14 and "clings" to Jesus by seeking to take possession of His body.  Jesus reassures her that He must ascend to the Father and she should tell the other disciples of this plan - which she does.  Mary does not fully grasp Jesus' plan to go away and leave His followers with the Holy Spirit (see John 14-16), but nonetheless follows Jesus' command to inform the other disciples.
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid "clinging" to our own version of Jesus.  Claim the promise that we can never be separated from God's love (Romans 8:38-39).  Follow the example of Mary who obeyed Jesus even though she was likely concerned she would not see Him again.  Often, obedience is not comfortable but we should follow the will of God.

 John 18:1-11

This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” John 18:9

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 18:1-11, where Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested in the garden at Gethsemane.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus goes to a place he and the disciples know well - v2.  He knew all details of what would happen to Him - v4, including the betrayal by Judas, His arrest, and Peter's reaction.  Jesus then asks the soldiers and temple officers (and Judas) twice the same question - vv4,7 - "whom do you seek?"  Contrast this with how Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10) and how many during Jesus' ministry sought Jesus - for His healing power. V8 shares how Jesus sought to fulfill scripture spoken by Him in John 17:12. Jesus does not lose any of those He adopts into His family of believers - a great promise to claim.  We also see in v11 that - again - nothing can stop God's plan to die on the cross as He stuck to the plan and willingly laid down His life as the final atonement for all sin across redemptive history.  Jesus' response to Peter's defensive act again shows how He stuck to the plan - His own death on the cross. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Judas' betrayal is described in more detail as he "procured" the band of soldiers and officers to arrest Jesus and stood with them - vv3,5.  This group is described as acting as a unit when Jesus identifies Himself in v6 as "they drew back and fell to the ground" in response.  This is curious because on one hand they arresting Jesus and on the other we see an apparent act of worship.  Perhaps this was the Holy Spirit drawing them back and knocking them to the ground getting them to understand the gravity of what they are doing - arresting the Son of God as a precursor to killing Him.  Peter on the other hand does not draw back but moves to prevent the arrest.  We see from Luke 22:50-51 how Jesus then heals the servant struck in the ear - an act of great forgiveness and mercy to one who was seeking harm to Jesus.     
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): All sin is a betrayal of Jesus - seek forgiveness and reconciliation to God.  Claim the promise that Jesus does not lose those He adopts into His family of believers - eternal life. Follow the example of Jesus to understand and follow God's will for your life.  Do not attempt to thwart God's will.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 17:1-5, where Jesus pauses speaking to the disciples to pray what is referred to as the High Priestly Prayer.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus sticks to His mission and plan given to Him by the Father - to seek and save the lost through His ministry on earth then to die on the cross and to rise again claiming victory over sin and death as the perfect sacrifice for all sin throughout redemptive history.  Jesus shares how the "hour has come" given He has completed what He was sent to do on earth (vv1, 4) and He is now ready for His arrest and crucifixion which we see comes next in John 18-19.  Jesus prays that He and the Father are glorified - v1.  In v2, He supports His prayer in v1 by sharing that He is worthy of glory Himself and worthy of bringing glory to the Father because the Father has given Him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom the Father has given Him (adopted into His family). V3 is not a prayer per se but a definition and set of conditions of eternal life for those that will receive it - you must know God the Father and Jesus (and of course that they are One - both persons of the Triune God).  In v5, Jesus repeats His prayer that He be glorified - in the Father's presence (similar to Jesus' baptism) - with the glory Jesus shared with the Father since the beginning.  The Triune God has existed since the beginning and will exist through the end - Alpha and Omega.    
• What do we learn from the text about people?: People exist for the glory of God just as Jesus existed for the glory of God the Father.      
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Claim the promise that Jesus is the Alpha and Omega and that for those that believe He gives them eternal life.  Follow the example of Jesus to know the will of God and to follow it - accomplish the work given to you.  Bring glory to God in all that you do.  We exist to

John 9:1-7

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 9:1-7, where Jesus heals a man blind from birth (vv6-7).  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Sin and death entered the world after the Fall in Genesis 3  - see Romans 5:12. In John 16:33, Jesus shares that believers will have tribulation (troubles). This is part of God's plan since the Fall.  Also part of God's plan is how Jesus is the Light of the World (v5) and how it is through our weakness and brokenness that God's Light shines most bright (v3).  V4 shares a deep insight about how believers should approach difficult circumstances and tribulation - we must "work the works of him."  We are all God's work and He does not make any mistakes - when we are sick, broken, sinful, etc. this is part of God's plan to shine His Light through us.  We just need to submit and surrender to Him, and abide in Him so that we bear fruit by allowing Him to work through us.
• What do we learn from the text about people?: The text reveals a question that many ask -believers and non-believers alike - do difficult circumstances result from sin?  We have trouble understanding difficult circumstances, particularly when we perceive ourselves as undeserving of such tribulation.  The problem then becomes a false believe that we are good and we cannot make this claim.  See Romans 3:23 and 1 John 1:8 where all sin and fall short of the glory of God - not some people, but everyone. 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Claim the promise that God works through us in our weakness.  Follow the example of Jesus who worked the works of the Father by submitting to His Will and allowing the Father to work through Him - ultimately by raising Jesus from the dead after His death on the cross.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 7:1-9, where Jesus continues to remain in Galilee - having just taught at the synagogue in Capernaum.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Once again we see Jesus focused squarely on His plan - He will not be deterred by the prompting of the disciples to go to Judea - vv3-5.  Jesus will not leave Galilee and go into Judea as He knows the "Jews were seeking to kill him" (v1).  In response to the prompting to go to Judea where the Jews were celebrating the Feast of Booths, Jesus shares that His "time has not come yet, but your time is always here" (v6).  He repeats that His time has not come yet once again in v8.  Jesus also shares in v7 that world hates Jesus because "[He] testif[ies] about it that its works are evil."      
• What do we learn from the text about people?: The disciples believe they have a better plan than that of Jesus - see vv3-5 where their argument to Him to go to Judea is that Jesus' works must be more visible for people to believe in Him.  Yet what the disciples don't know is that the greatest work of all time - the raising of Jesus from the grave - is on the way.  And....Jesus has more work to do both with the disciples and with His ministry.  
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid seeking not our own will but that of God.  Follow Jesus' example to focus on the Father’s will and not be deterred.

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 6:22-40 - where shares that He is the Bread of Life. Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: The crowds fed during the Feeding of the Five Thousand (vv1-15), seek Jesus and when they find Him (v25), Jesus does not directly answer the question they ask.  Instead, once again acting with intention, Jesus cuts to the heart of the matter by sharing in v26 - starting with "truly, truly" to emphasize His authority - that He knows why they seek Him; they seek Him because He provides for their physical needs (food). He wants the people to see that He provides spiritual nourishment (v27).  He wants them to believe in Him for this spiritual nourishment, and they want to know how to believe (vv29-30). They seek a sign to believe Him (v30), and Jesus admonishes them for believing that Moses provided manna to the Israelites as they wandered in the wilderness (v32) - He wants them to see how it was the Father who provided the manna. Jesus then wants them to see how the Father is now sending the Son to be the Bread of Life (vv33,35). In v35, Jesus builds on what He shared with the Samaritan woman at the well where He encourages the woman to drink from the Living Water and never thirst again. V36 furthers Jesus' admonishment of the crowd that they have "seen [Him] yet do not believe." Jesus then promises that if we believe in Him, we will never be cast out (v37).  In vv38-40 we Jesus describing how He came to do the Father's will, that He will not lose anything given from the Father to Him, that those who believe in Him will have eternal life, and the Father will raise the Son up on the last day. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: People often seek help with physical needs from Jesus, when instead we should KNOW that He provides for our physical needs and that it is more important that we have our spiritual needs met. We also see people that seek signs and evidence before they believe in Him.     
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid seeking signs or testing of God.  See Romans 1:20 where creation alone provides enough evidence to at least seek Him. Claim the promise of eternal life and that Jesus is the Living Water and Bread of Life who meets our most important needs - spiritual needs.  Follow the example of Jesus who does the will of God. Believe and trust in Him.

I continue my study of John, and today, I unpack John 4:31-37 using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the passage about God?: God wants us to see how our most important provision (above food, water, etc.) is the Word and to do the will of God.   God's will for us is to the share the gospel message to the world (Great Commission) and disciple others to bear fruit for the glory of God.  We all have a role in the Great Commission - some will sow, some will reap. 
• What do we learn from the passage about people?: The disciples focused on earthly concerns and we can expect that of those who do not know God.  Even those who know God grow too comfortable with the world (including myself from time to time).  
• Is there anything from the passage God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid,Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We should avoid growing too comfortable with the world but instead understand and focus on doing everything for the glory of God as we exist for the glory of God. Claim the promise that Jesus provides our daily bread and provision.  Follow Jesus' example to do the will of God.  Obey God's call to play a role in the Great Commission to "make disciples of all nations" (Matthew 28:20).

I continue my study of John, and today, I unpack John 2:1-12 using the Sword Bible Study Method, and tomorrow I will take another pass at the text and summarize my thoughts from both today and tomorrow by providing an outline/divisions and main point for the text.  

• What do we learn from the passage about God?: Once again, as I posted yesterday, Jesus acts with intent and purpose - He has a plan; see v4 where He rebukes His mother for asking Him to make more wine by sharing "My hour has not yet come"; yet while Jesus does act with intent and He does have a plan, He responds to the cares and concerns of His people and in this case His own mother;  clearly this was not a need that reached the same level as other requests for healing, etc. but Jesus will respond to the cares and concerns of His people and STILL make His plan work; here Jesus produces wine from water - the first of His miracles that "manifested His glory" - v10.  
• What do we learn from the passage about people?: Jesus' mother's request can be seen as a petty use of Jesus' power as the King of Kings; people often make petty requests of God - He is not a vending machine - vv3-4. Upon Jesus' turning of the water into wine, Jesus' disciples believed 
• Is there anything from the passage God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid,Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We should bring our cares and concerns to Jesus (1 Peter 5:7) and He wants to hear them - however, we should be mindful that Jesus is not a vending machine and we should seek His will not our own with our requests (see also Luke 22:42).

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, my focus is, per the commentary, the second division of the text from Mark 15:1-20 - vv6-14.  

• Using the Sword Bible Study Method focusing just on the text for today - vv1-5: (1) God in the text:  Jesus is the object of others' actions, and here Pilate is struggling with what to do with Jesus as he believes Jesus is innocent of any crime (v14) but at the same time Pilate must placate (v15) Jewish leadership (some of which must use there role to stir up civil unrest or other complications for Pilate).  Jewish leaders urge crucifixion of Jesus - vv13-14; Jesus is then mocked and scourged (v15) (2) People in the text: Jewish leaders seek Pilate to follow custom and release a prisoner during Passover and they urge Barrabas to be released (they roundly reject Pilate's suggestion that it be Jesus - v9) and it is ironic that Pilate agrees because Barrabas participated (committed murder) in insurrection against Rome (v7); Pilate correctly sees the Jewish leadership as envious of Jesus due to Jesus' following among the people as they felt threatened and did not see Jesus as the promised Messiah from OT prophecy; many believe the Messiah would be an earthly king that would overthrow Rome and restore Jerusalem to self governance and former glory (such as under David's rule) (3) Sins to avoid, promises to claim, examples to follow, and commands to obey: Avoid envy - see Exodus 20:17; see Jesus as the Promised Messiah and His kingdom as an eternal one not bound by earthly definitions. Do not murder.  Follow Jesus' example to understand and follow the Father's will.  Obey governing authorities (Romans 13).   

Excerpts from the commentary's second (of three) division: 

• The title of the first division is "Our Great King’s Substitution: The Injustice and Insult."   
• RE: Pilate's tough situation - we are referred to Matthew 27:19 where [Pilate's] wife had warned him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I’ve suffered terribly in a dream because of Him!”. 
• "Pilate has had enough. He publicly washes his hands, while the crowd accepts responsibility for executing the King (Matthew 27:24-25). Jesus was innocent but declared to be guilty."  It's important to note that this text describes how the crowd all but admits that they are committing murder by asking for Jesus' crucifixion.

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, my focus is, per the commentary, the first division of the text from Mark 15:1-20 - vv1-5.  

• Using the Sword Bible Study Method focusing just on the text for today - vv1-5: (1) God in the text: Following His arrest, Jesus is bound and led away to be questioned by Pilate (v1); Pilate questions Jesus seeking first perhaps to satisfy His own curiosity whether Jesus is King of the Jews (v2); Jesus response in v2 can be considered "non responsive" but it can also be seen as one of deference because Jesus sees Pilate as a governing authority and per Romans 13 believers are commanded to submit to governing authorities that God places over us; believers know the answer is yes to Pilate's question and Jesus affirms Pilate; Jesus is accused of "many things" and provided no further defense to Pilate (vv3-5); (2) People in the text: the Sanhedrin consult with each other then as soon as it was morning turn Jesus over to Pilate (v1); Pilate's questioning is designed to both placate the Sanhedrin yet walk a fine line to not stir up Jesus' followers because we know later that Pilate sees Jesus as not guilty of any crimes (vv2-4); Pilate is amazed (v5) that Jesus offers no defense perhaps seeing Jesus as powerful and able to defend Himself more than adequately based on what he has heard about Jesus (3) Sins to avoid, promises to claim, examples to follow, and commands to obey: Believers should have a right and true understanding of Jesus as Son of the Most Holy God and as God Himself, along with the Holy Spirit - the Triune God. We are to submit to governing authorities - of course unless it conflicts with what God commands us to do.  We should not blaspheme - something Jesus was accused of doing but did not. Jesus of course is our example as He follows and submits to His Father's will.

• The title of this chapter of the commentary covering this text is "Jesus the Great King: The Sacrifice for Sinners", and the main idea for the entirety of the text (vv1-20) is "Jesus suffered in our place as the sacrifice for sinners."

• "The Sanhedrin needs to move quickly to get the “Jesus case” before Pilate. They want Him executed before the Sabbath begins on Friday evening at sundown."

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, my focus is per the commentary, the first division of the text from Mark 14:53-72 - vv53-65.  

• Using the Sword Bible Study Method focusing just on the text for today - vv53-65: (1) God in the text: Jesus is led to the high priest after His arrest (v53); Jesus is subjected to trial before the temple chief priests, elders, and scribes where they sought evidence to convict Jesus of blasphemy (vv53, 55); despite this questioning and false witness (v56-59), etc. there was no evidence that Jesus committed blasphemy (or any other sin) (v55); Jesus was silent in the face of all questioning except the questioning from the chief priest who sought to confirm Jesus identity as Christ the Son of the Blessed (v61) - to this Jesus said yes and pointed to His second coming (v62); Jesus was mocked, covered and spat upon (v65); (2) people in the text: Peter followed Jesus "at a distance - warming himself" focusing on his comfort vs the persecution of Jesus (v54); Peter denies Jesus just as prophesied during the Last Supper (vv26-31); the chief priests, elders, and scribes falsely accused Jesus of blasphemy against God yet ironically it was them who were blasphemous as Jesus confirms His identity to them and yet they still seek to condemn based on false charges they made up; (3) Sins to avoid, promises to claim, examples to follow, and commands to obey: we should love God first (most important commandment) and not blaspheme Him; we should claim the promise that Jesus is the Son of God and He is worthy of all worship; and also rest in the promise that He will return; we should stand firm in our faith during trials and trust in Him; we should follow Jesus example to seek God's will for our lives and follow His will.

• The title of this chapter of the commentary covering this text is "The Beginning of the End for the Great King," and the main idea for the entirety of the text (vv53-72) is "[e]ven amid the falling away of all His followers, Jesus remained faithful to His calling."
• The title of the first division is "Jesus Makes the Faithful Witness as to Who He Is."  
• "[Jesus'] final hours were unjust and illegal. Jesus endured six hearings in a matter of hours—three ecclesiastical trials before the Jewish In the case of our Savior, not only was life unfair; His final hours were unjust and illegal. Jesus endured six hearings in a matter of hours—three ecclesiastical trials before the Jewish religious authorities and three civil trials before the Roman political authorities (Matthew 26–27; Mark 14–15; Luke 22–23; John 18–19). It is difficult to count up all the violations of Jewish law."
• Fulfilling scripture just as written (Isaiah 53:7) Jesus remains silent as He is questioned - the only time Jesus speaks is to reveal the "messianic secret" that Jesus sought to keep under wraps during His time in ministry. He is the Son of God.

My Prayer: Father God You are an awesome God who loves and who saves!  I am not deserving of how You love and save.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please continue to heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, my focus is per the commentary, the third division of the text from Mark 14:26-52 - vv43-52.  

• Using the Sword Bible Study Method focusing just on the text for today - vv43-52: (1) God in the text: Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested by the temple guard; Jesus of course has an opportunity but does not stop his arrest, as we know from the other gospel accounts (John 18:1-11, Luke 22:47-53, and Matthew 26:47-56) that Jesus tells Peter (who struck one of the high priests with his sword) to “[p]ut your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”; He sought to fulfill scriptures - v50; (2) people in the text: Judas arrives with the temple guard, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders (v43); Judas is referred to as both one of the twelve and as the betrayer (vv43-44), perhaps alluding to how God seeks to give everyone many second, third, etc. chances to repents and be saved; those arresting Jesus "laid hands" on Him (v46) - ironically, scripture uses the same language we often use when we pray for someone we are sending out; consistent with his impulsive nature (seeking with good intent to protect Jesus), Peter strikes one the servants of the high priests but is told by Jesus to "back down"; Jesus knew this was the appointed time even as He rhetorically questions the timing - v49; the disciples flee in fear v50 (3) Sins to avoid, promises to claim, examples to follow, and commands to obey: we should see Jesus fulfilled scripture and we can rely on the veracity of the Word and how all of God's promises find there yes in Jesus (2 Corinthians 1:20). We are called to follow Jesus' example to understand God's will for our lives and to follow His will.  

Excerpts from the commentary's third (of three) division: 

• The title of the second division (vv43-52) per the commentary is "The King Would Be Arrested and Forsaken Alone." 
• We are referred to OT prophecy from Isaiah 53:3-12 for how Jesus fulfilled the law.  
• RE: the young man in vv51-52: "[c]hurch tradition says the young man was Mark, the author of our second Gospel. So again, as it was in the garden of Eden, our nakedness is exposed as we desert the God who loves us and has graced us so abundantly with His kindness and good gifts." 
• "[Jesus] is arrested, and He is forsaken. He is all alone to face the wrath of men and the wrath of God. He will receive receive all that we deserve, that we might receive all that He deserves. The “Great Exchange” has begun."
