I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 18:1-11, where Jesus is betrayed by Judas and arrested in the garden at Gethsemane.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus goes to a place he and the disciples know well - v2.  He knew all details of what would happen to Him - v4, including the betrayal by Judas, His arrest, and Peter's reaction.  Jesus then asks the soldiers and temple officers (and Judas) twice the same question - vv4,7 - "whom do you seek?"  Contrast this with how Jesus came to seek and save the lost (Luke 19:10) and how many during Jesus' ministry sought Jesus - for His healing power. V8 shares how Jesus sought to fulfill scripture spoken by Him in John 17:12. Jesus does not lose any of those He adopts into His family of believers - a great promise to claim.  We also see in v11 that - again - nothing can stop God's plan to die on the cross as He stuck to the plan and willingly laid down His life as the final atonement for all sin across redemptive history.  Jesus' response to Peter's defensive act again shows how He stuck to the plan - His own death on the cross. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Judas' betrayal is described in more detail as he "procured" the band of soldiers and officers to arrest Jesus and stood with them - vv3,5.  This group is described as acting as a unit when Jesus identifies Himself in v6 as "they drew back and fell to the ground" in response.  This is curious because on one hand they arresting Jesus and on the other we see an apparent act of worship.  Perhaps this was the Holy Spirit drawing them back and knocking them to the ground getting them to understand the gravity of what they are doing - arresting the Son of God as a precursor to killing Him.  Peter on the other hand does not draw back but moves to prevent the arrest.  We see from Luke 22:50-51 how Jesus then heals the servant struck in the ear - an act of great forgiveness and mercy to one who was seeking harm to Jesus.     
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): All sin is a betrayal of Jesus - seek forgiveness and reconciliation to God.  Claim the promise that Jesus does not lose those He adopts into His family of believers - eternal life. Follow the example of Jesus to understand and follow God's will for your life.  Do not attempt to thwart God's will.

I continue my study of the last four books of the OT (complete: Zephaniah, Haggai; to complete: Zechariah, Malachi) - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Zechariah 8:1-17, which the commentary outlines as the fifth of five divisions for the text 7:1-8:23 (7:1-3/8:18-23, 7:4-7, 7:8-10, 7:11-14, 8:1-17).  The overarching theme - as described by the commentary's title for the text - the commentary uses for the text 7:1-8:23 is Transformed from Trusting Our Capabilities to Trusting His Faithfulness.  The beginning of chapter 7 discusses how God's people focused on extra-biblical ritual fasting as a reflection of their own desires and powers vs leaning on God and what He seeks from us.  The commentary for the text today 8 alludes to this with how it opens with how "[Zechariah] begins to tell the people exactly what God will do as He transforms their fasting into feasting. In the opening verse God reminds His people of His jealous love for Zion, that is, Jerusalem....God makes promises to His people, revealing His faithfulness to accomplish what they are incapable of doing on their own."  The commentary then outlines what God will do:

• He will return to Jerusalem - v3
• He will bless the residents of the city with both long life and new life - vv4-5
• He will bring the nations to Jerusalem and make them His own - vv7-8
• He will bring peace, productivity, and power to His people - vv9-13
• He will drive away the fear they have experienced - vv14-17

The commentary winds down for the text by sharing how God "meets us in our broken places to transform us from serving ourselves to serving Him, from pursuing empty religion to pursuing His righteousness, from listening to our own desires to hearing His voice, and from depending on our own capabilities to trusting His faithfulness."

As I posted yesterday, similar to how throughout scripture God's servants experienced difficulties, there will be turbulent times in our lives, but nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus (Romans 8:39).  He is always with us and we can draw comfort and peace knowing that God has already secured victory over both sin and death.  God's grace is sufficient and His power is perfect in our times of weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9)!

I continue my study of the last four books of the OT (complete: Zephaniah, Haggai; to complete: Zechariah, Malachi) - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For today, my focus is an unassisted review of Zechariah 3:2, which the commentary outlines as the second of six divisions for the text 3:1-10 (3:1, 3:2, 3:3, 3:4-5, 3:6-7, 3:8-10).  Building on yesterday's post (and the day before) which explored v1, v2 looks at how Jesus is provident over all sin and Satan.  So, yes Satan seeks to separate us from Jesus but for believers that remain close to God through spiritual disciplines nothing can separate us from the love of God and how He protects us (see also Romans 8:38-39).  We already know the victory over sin and death is won! God is provident over all sin and Satan.  Thank You Jesus!  Please help me remain near to You and in fellowship with You!

I continue my study of Haggai - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For this morning, my focus is commentary-assisted review of Haggai 1:13, which outlines this verse as both the the first and subdivision of 1:13-15 and for this morning I explore the second subdivision from the commentary which is entitled The Lord Promises His Presence to His People to Stir Them to Obedience. Excerpts from the commentary for this second subdivision:

• "What is this promise that God felt so compelled to declare to His people? Simply put, He promises that He is with them. This is no small thing. This promise indicates a change in tone from the Lord. The people were disobedient, so He compelled them to obey. Then they turned from their sin and embraced righteousness, so God immediately began to affirm them and His presence among them. He is with them, and He will be with them. This is a promise of comfort, it is a promise of blessing, and most of all, it is the promise of grace."
• We should be greatly comforted for how God declares that He is with us not just at any moment in time but always as scripture repeatedly shares how God is with this.  The commentary points us to Deuteronomy 31:6, but there are others including Matthew 28:20 where Jesus commands His disciples to go out into the world to deliver the gospel (The Great Commission) sharing "I am with you always, to the end of the age."  See also Romans 8:38-39 where Paul shares that nothing can separate believers from the love of God. 
• The commentary describes moments of weakness we are all apt to have, including where Peter disavows knowing Jesus after Jesus' arrest that night in the garden of Gethsemane. In these moments we should lean on and take strength being confident in how God is with us always.  "God is with us, and He will conquer evil in the end. This confidence allows Christians to be like no other group throughout history and to thrive even when we are seemingly being defeated."
• Christ's resurrection gives us confidence that ultimately we will defeat both sin and death and be with Jesus eternally. 
• The commentary describes how this verse also emphasizes God's grace and how we should always know how faithful God is and how His grace never ends - despite our sin. See also 1 Timothy 1:15 and Romans 5:8.

I continued my study of Proverbs, moving deeper into chapter 8. Today, the questions of my study focus one how wisdom is an attribute of God, how wisdom (God's Word) is more valuable than any earthly treasure, and how humility and a desire to please God drive us into His arms to seek Him and His wisdom. The commentary for this chapter of my study includes thoughts on how God offers wisdom to the undeserving, rewards and blessings for those who seek wisdom, and life and favor to those who find God.  The commentary also includes a discussion of how gates, throughout scripture, served to separated those who believe in God and those who do not. John Piper reminds us how, with Christ, we have direct access to the Father - what a comfort and encouragement!  Be encouraged!  Go to God in prayer!

This morning, I continued my study of Romans.  Using my commentary - Exalting Jesus in Romans (eBook) - I continued with chapter twelve God is for Us, which covers Romans 8:31-39.  My focus today is Romans 8:35-39, which my commentary refers to under the heading Who Can Separate Us.  In Romans 8, we see momentum building with regards to Paul's assurances for believers - we are not condemned, there are no charges that can be brought against us, we are assured salvation, we are adopted into God's family and are heirs to His inheritance, we are released from the law, we have the Holy Spirit, etc. - and now as we get to the end of chapter 8, Paul asks rhetorically whether we can be separated from God's love (v35).  He quotes Psalm 44:22, where the Psalmist seeks comfort from God during a period of exile (v36), and answers resoundingly "no" in v37-39. We should never doubt that God loves us - and during a period of trial this helps us see what God is doing in our lives - where the blessing is - as there is always a blessing.  We may not see it unfold in the trial but we can now it is there - and of course we know that our Heavenly bodies await us.  This is a great promise indeed!

My commentary sums it up nicely: "He does not promise us that life will be easy, but he promises to be with us. He promises that nothing will unfasten us from his love.  He promises to take us to glory." We are pointed to Psalms 23:6, which my commentary refers to as "[t]he Romans 8:31-39 of the Old Testament."

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
