For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth.

 3 John 1

For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. 3 John 1:3

I continue my study of 1,2,3 John using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for these books.  Today, my study consists of a commentary-assisted review of 3 John 1, focusing on the first division - vv1-8 and unpacking the introduction and main idea for the entirety of the chapter per the commentary, as well as the commentary for the first division.

Main idea (vv1-15): "As followers of Jesus, our lives and reputations ought to reflect His love, affection, and hospitality toward one another."

Excerpts from introduction

  • "Like 1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon, it is written to an individual, a man named Gaius. Written by John between AD 80 and 95, Eusebius, the ancient church historian, says it was penned after John was released from the rock quarry island of Patmos in the Aegean Sea. If this is correct, 3 John may have been the last book written in the New Testament."
  • John writes about four men, including Gaius, and the text highlights the importance of reputation for believers as the world is watching us to assess whether we are truly walking in the truth of simply talking the truth but then not walking the truth as many believers unfortunately do.

Title of text and highlights of associated commentary for first division: "Gaius: A Man with the Right Balance (1-8)":

  • John commends Gaius in four areas of his life, encouraging all believers to follow this example.  These four areas include: living in the Spirit (vv1-2), walking in the Truth (vv3-4), serving faithfully (vv5-6), and ministering generously (vv7-8).
  • Gaius had a clean bill of health spiritually. Perhaps he was suffering some physical difficulty, but his soul was “ship shape,” in top condition."
  • "In doctrine and deed, Gaius was commendable, praiseworthy, praiseworthy, and a joy to his brothers and sisters in Christ. There was no contradiction between his profession (talk) and practice (walk)."
  • "In providing lodging, food, money, encouragement, and prayer, and in standing with them even though they were “strangers,” Gaius had honored God, the gospel, and John. Sensitive to the hospitality expectations of the ancient Near Eastern world, Gaius had received these traveling teachers into his home and honored the Lord and the apostle who sent them."
  • "We may not physically go where [missionaries] go, but we can go with them anyway by our support. All pray. All give support. Some are sent. All are essential as we cooperate together in the work of God."
Much of today's text flows from v3 where we are encouraged by Gaius' example to walk in the truth and avoid hypocrisy.  If we are not walking in the truth, then all of the other attributes of Gaius' live praised by John don't apply. Walk the walk!

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who is full of grace and compassion for me - giving my faith and salvation, the Holy Spirit, Your Word, the church, and my brothers and sisters in Christ who guide me in my journey to bring glory to Christ and assist me in my journey towards walking the walk...thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of such blessings.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

For all things are possible with God.

Mark 10

For all things are possible with God. Mark 10:27b

I continue my pause of my study of 1 Corinthians as I participate in a men's discipleship group (d-group) at my church - this morning my d-group gathers to discuss 2 Thessalonians 1 and Titus 2.  My individual study, however leans on DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotion, which today looks at Mark 10:27b and how this text provides "Medicine for the Missionary."  John Piper directs this devotion to Christian Hedonist missionaries, which can be broadly defined as all believers who assume the mantle to bring the Good News into the world because they can't help but spread the joy that overflows from the grace of God into their hearts.  Piper writes: "[s]overeign grace is the spring of life for the Christian Hedonist. For what the Christian Hedonist [missionary] loves best is the experience of the sovereign grace of God filling him, and overflowing for the good of others."  He refers us to 1 Corinthians 3:7, 15:10, Romans 11:36, 15:18, John 15:5, and 2 Corinthians 3:5 and how missionaries rely on the grace of God to accomplish what only He can do. Missionary work is seen as difficult, requiring encouragement, strength, and hope.  Jesus's words from Mark 10:27b (see also Luke 18 and Matthew 19) provide this encouragement, strength and hope.  Piper concludes the devotion by sharing that Mark 10:27b provides "the antidote to despair and the antidote to pride — the perfect missionary medicine."

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are a good, good Father and I know You love me beyond what my words can describe.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of Your love, the hope You provide, and for how You arm me for battle against sin.  My sin is great and it is daily.  I pray that I remain in You and You in me.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul and mind and love others as You love me.

As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world.

John 17

As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. John 17:18

This morning, my focus is DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotion, where John Piper seeks for believers to prepare our hearts for Christmas.  Today's Solid Joys daily devotion marks day 18 of Advent, and today John Piper focuses on how Christmas is a model for missions. The Great Commission in Matthew 28 calls believers to go out and make disciples of all nations.  Regardless of whether we as believers are personally engaged in the global mission field, we are called to support - through prayer, financial assistance, etc. - missions.  Missionaries often place themselves in harm's way by venturing deep into places where sharing the gospel is a known danger based on previous persecution of Christians. For those facing this danger, Piper quotes mid-16th century missionary Francis Xavier (1506–1552) and encourages missionaries to avoid "distrust[ing] the mercy of God."  Piper then goes on to share that if this "danger is avoided, then all other dangers lose their sting. In the end God makes every dagger a scepter in our hand. As J.W. Alexander says, 'Each instant of present labor is to be graciously repaid with a million ages of glory.'"  This serves as an encouragement for all believers to live fearlessly as whatever fear of man we may have, pales in comparison to the danger many missionaries face every day. Be bold!

And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

Matthew 24

And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. Matthew 24:14

Tonight, I continue a pause on both of my studies in Isaiah and Revelation to listen to John Piper's daily devotion for today - Solid Joys.  Here Piper emphasizes that what is stated here in Matthew 24:14 is one of God's promises - God states that "the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole worldbefore the end times.  The certainty of Jesus' statement is worth noting here, according to Piper, because believers can pray with great faith and invest with great confidence both those in the mission field (effort) and those supporting them.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your promises!  There are many and because You are faithful - I know they will all come to pass.  I can pray in great faith and invest richly into the mission field because I know You will fulfill Your promise.  Thank You Jesus!  What a blessing!  I am not deserving of participating in such a blessing - my sin is great and it is daily....worry, anger, etc.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”

Mark 10

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” Mark 10:27

This evening, until I start a new Bible study, I continue using devotionals from John Piper.  Today, the post focuses on encouragement primarily for those in the frontier mission field, but also for those who might work locally among ministries and missions close to home. We are encouraged to be bold - Piper provides two incentives to be bold:

  1. Every impossibility is a possibility with God - Mark 10:27
  2. Whatever we lose in this world pales in comparison with what we gain now through Christ Jesus and for eternity - Mark 10:29-30

Piper writes: "[w]hen we follow his missionary prescription, we discover that even the painful side effects work to improve our condition. Our spiritual health, our joy, improves a hundredfold. And when we die, we do not die. We gain eternal life."

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are amazing and Your power is beyond our comprehension - You created the Heavens and the Earth and all that inhabits the universe.  You created me and give me and all others life - and believers life to the full.  You rose from the grave and give believers the same power now and eternal life.  Great incentives to work on Your behalf - indeed!  I am not deserving of the power You provide for me - nor any of the blessings.  I worry and I have other sins. Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. ...[S]o that by God's will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company.

Romans 15

...[S]o that by God's will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company. Romans 15:32

This morning, I continued my study of Romans.  Using my commentary - Exalting Jesus in Romans (eBook) - I continued with chapter nineteen Great Commission Christians, which covers Romans 15:14-15:33.  My focus today is v15:28-29, 32, which my commentary refers to under the heading "Refresh Those on the Front Lines." As I continue to unpack what my commentary refers to as Paul's missionary letter (Romans 15), I come back to a theme I addressed a couple of days ago - how believers can support those in the mission field, even those in local ministries who might not be many miles away from home.  Although I have never been in the role, my sense is that being a missionary in a far off place or even starting a local ministry can be a lonely and challenging place as people are called by what I posted about a few days ago - holy ambition.  While we can provide financial and material support, we can also pray, encourage, and support in other ways - Paul refers to this in v15:32 as being "refreshed."

My commentary refers to this as "relational refreshment" and refers to John Piper's message how "God loves to refresh people through people." We are encouraged to "refresh one another...leadership...those overseas...[and to] make the ministry of refreshment part of our regular Christian lives, through personal visits, by communicating through available means, and by practicing hospitality, all with gospel-saturated words of encouragement."

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are amazing and You have placed others in my life that refresh me - thank Your Jesus.  However, I have often fallen down in being a refreshment to others.
