I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 12:20-26, where Jesus has made has made his (Triumphal) entry to Jerusalem at the start of Passion (Holy) Week, there are Greeks who are seeking Jesus, and here we see Philip and Andrew approach Jesus to entreaty Him on behalf of the Greeks.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus knows that many want to spend time with Him, and scripture documents how He carefully manages to His mission and timeline.  V23 is telling in that He does not respond directly to the request made by Andrew and Philip (on behalf of the Greeks) but instead shares how it is time for Him "to be glorified."  While Jesus' arrest and crucifixion is not imminent based on John's account of the gospel, Jesus does have to ensure that He will be arrested and crucified.  Jesus then uses the account to speak in parables so that people can begin to understand what is about to happen.  In vv24-25, He uses the analogy of a grain of wheat falling to the ground and dying but in turn producing more wheat and a greater harvest.  So....for believers of today reading this gospel, we can say that Jesus is talking about Himself laying down His life for others to be saved.  Vv25-26, Jesus pivots away from the parable to bring home the point that believers in Him must be prepared to lose their life by surrendering it in love and service to Him and others...for the sake of the gospel and saving as many as possible.  Jesus then makes both a negative and a positive promise first by sharing that if you love your life, you will lose it - implying eternal condemnation while at the same time, if you "hate" your life or deny yourself, you keep your life by gaining honor and favor from Him and eternal life. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: At this point in the gospel Jesus is sought after in John's gospel, He has just raised Lazarus from the dead (see John 11), and the Pharisees are very concerned (John 12:9-11, 17-19) about the attention Jesus was getting based on this miracle. Vv20-22 describe how there were Greeks who were coming up to worship for the Passover, they sought Jesus (by telling Philip), and Andrew and Philip approach Jesus. Other than this, it is difficult to infer or discern an application from vv20-26 other than Jesus wants those who seek to believe and follow Him to understand that there is a cost to following Him.  It is reasonable to assume that many wanted to spend time with Jesus if for anything else because He has performed these miracles that are now hard to ignore if you have spent anytime in Jerusalem - the city is buzzing with conversations about Him and who He might be.   
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid loving your life or the world.  Claim the promise that hating your life or denying oneself and surrendering it to Jesus in love and service to Him will result in eternal life. Follow the example of Jesus who laid down His life (hating His own life) in service of the Father.  Love God and love others.

Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 12:27-36, where we Jesus talking and teaching a crowd in Jerusalem during Passover.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: As the Incarnate Son of God, both fully God and fully human, Jesus experiences what all people experience, including pain and suffering - see v27 where Jesus is "troubled" as He knows the hour for His crucifixion is near.  As God, He can stop this but He does not as He shares that "for this purpose I have come to this hour."  Jesus asks God to glorify the Father's name in v28 and the Father responds yes I have and yes I will again.  Jesus was sent by the Father and we must recall from John 10:30 that God and the Father are One.  Jesus shares in v30 that the voice from Heaven was come for the sake of those listening to Him so that they can believe.  Vv31-32 shares how judgement is coming to the world and that Jesus will die and rise to Heaven and save others through their faith in Him.  We must understand Jesus' plan to seek and save the lost - that is why He came (Luke 19:10) - this believers' purpose also.  Jesus wants to save as many as possible - see vv35-36 where Jesus warns people that He will not be around very much longer (He will die, rise and be seated on right hand of the Father) and if they do not believe, they will face eternal damnation and darkness.     
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Those in the crowd listening to Jesus heard the Father speak to Jesus and believed it was thunder or an angel - v29.  This was indeed a divine moment yet most (except perhaps the disciples who were nearly always with Jesus) in attendance did not see it as the Father speaking to the Son and we will see later how the people did not believe in Him (v37). V34 demonstrates this unbelief due to their questioning of what He is teaching.    
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We should avoid trusting in our own understanding but instead in wisdom and understanding that comes from God alone (Proverbs 3:5). We should claim the promise that faith in God will give us eternal life.  We should follow the example of Jesus who obeyed the will of the Father to die on the cross - we too must deny our earthly desires and instead do His will.  We should believe and walk in the light - Jesus Christ.

John 8:21-8:30

I continue my study of John and today I focus on John 8:21-8:30, where Jesus continues to teach in the temple in Jerusalem after the Feast of Booths, and now He describes how He is from Heaven and from the Father, and this gives Him the authority to judge and condemn those who do not believe in Him.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the text about God?: Jesus once again refers to soon His to be ascension to Heaven following His death on the cross and that if you don't believe in Him (as the Jews do not) they will "die in [their] sin) - v21.  In response to the Jews who think He is going to kill Himself (v22), Jesus shares that He is from above - Heaven - clarifying where He is going (to be seated at the right hand of God), and that He is not of this world (v23).  Jesus repeats the promise that if you don't believe in Him, You will die in your sins (v24) - emphasizing an important Gospel (negative) promise and warning.  In response to the Jews' continued confusion about what Jesus is saying (vv25, 27) and their questioning, Jesus shares that His message has been consistent "from the beginning" (v25).  He then goes on to share that He has much to say about the Jews and much to judge (v26) and what He has declared about them He learned from the Father, who is He is true. In v28, Jesus reinforces the point that upon His resurrection, they will know that He is from the Father and the Father has granted Him authority to share what He has been sharing (and for these words to be true). Vv29-30 pivots to a hopeful message how the Father is always with Jesus and how Jesus seeks to please the Father, and how upon Jesus saying these things "many believed in Him."             
• What do we learn from the text about people?: The Jewish leaders and Pharisees don't really want to earnestly learn about Jesus, as their questions are motivated by anger and spite as they seek to do harm to Jesus (arrest and kill).  This questioning is more to trap Jesus into heresy or sin so that the Jews have a basis to condemn Jesus - which of course we know they will never have. We should strive to understand people's questions and have mercy on those who doubt (Jude 22-23). 
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid judging others as this is for God alone to do.  Claim the promise that Jesus is who He says is and that He is Lord and Savior.  Follow Jesus' example to please the Father. Obey the command to bring glory to Him in all that we do (1 Corinthians 10:31).

I continue my study of John, and today, I move to start unpacking Jesus' extended response to the Jews persecuting and seeking to kill Him (which started in vv16-18).  This response continues through the end of the chapter (last verse is v47), so I am going to tackle this in chunks starting with vv19-24 - here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method. 

• What do we learn from the passage about God?: Jesus speaks with authority as the Son of God, sent by the Father - v19 uses language from scripture elsewhere "truly, truly" as He emphasizes His authority on the matter.  He not only speaks with authority, He acts with authority doing what the Father tells Him to do, as the Father does the same and because the Father "loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing" (v20). Both Father and Son raise the dead and give life, and the Son gives life "to whom He will" (v21).  This is key because we know that some believe in Jesus and some do not - faith is a gift from God, not of our own doing (Ephesians 2:8), and He alone saves. Vv22-23 share how the authority to judge has been delegated from the Father to the Son and that we are then called to honor the Son based on this authority.  V24 gives us an important promise repeated most famously in John 3:16 that whoever hears the gospel, believes that Jesus was sent by God and believes God (affirms authority of both God the Father and the Son) has eternal life and will not be condemned (implied also that such a person - believer - will have rebirth or regeneration).  
• What do we learn from the passage about people?: While not explicitly stated, we can infer in the text that those who do not believe in Jesus and His authority as Lord of All (and Savior) will suffer eternal condemnation.         
• Is there anything from the passage God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid not honoring God or not believing in Him, follow the example of Jesus who did the will of the Father (dying on the cross, etc.), claim the promise of ("greater works") life now to the full and for eternity in Heaven based on belief in Him.

I continue my study of John, and today, I further unpacking John 3:25-36 by providing an outline and a main point.

 Main point:  Jesus is God, and we must believe in Him to be saved. 

 V25: Baptism by John was only a taste of things to come. There was a discussion among some of John’s disciples (unnamed here) and a Jew (unnamed here) about purification; purification here refers to ceremonial washing that was important in the Old Testament law as means to approach God – the implication of having this discussion is that for those who know the OT law they might question the validity of baptism as performed by John. 

Vv26-30: Jesus is now the focus, and all must see Him for who He is. While there might a question by some over the validity of baptism by John, those participating in the debate did see John as having authority as he is referred to as Rabbi; as they engage John on whether is concerned that Jesus is now baptizing, John responds with great humility. John emphasizes that (a) Jesus is the one on whom people should focus, (b) he is not jealous of the attention and glory that Jesus is now getting because He rightly deserves all glory, (c) his (current) ministry is complete now that Jesus’ ministry has started, and finally in v30 that (d) Jesus must increase and John must decrease.

Vv31-35: Jesus reigns over all as God’s equal. John then describes Jesus (a) as coming from Heaven and that He reigns over all things, (b) as bearing witness to things both from Heaven and earth – including eternal life, (c) as having His message rejected by some yet received by others, (d) as being Truth because He was sent by God, speaks the Word of God and God is Truth, (e) as giving the Spirit “without measure” as any attribute or power of God is limitless and beyond measure or human comprehension, and (f) as being equal to God because God gave “all things into his hand.”

V36: Whoever believes in Jesus has eternal life but for those who don’t believe in Him, face eternal condemnation.

Mark 16:14-20

At the urging of pastors at my church and my wife Lisa, I continue my study of Mark - without assistance of a commentary.  Today, I explore Mark 16:14-20 which primarily focuses on the Great Commission:

Main point: While Jesus forgives temporary unbelief, eternal condemnation awaits those who reject the gospel message.

1. Disciples rebuked for temporary unbelief (v14)
2. Disciples charged to share the gospel to whole creation (v15)
3. Believers of gospel saved, while eternal condemnation awaits unbelievers (v16)
4. Salvation is a miracle (vv17-18)
5. Holy Spirit and miraculous signs will help disciples confirm gospel (vv19-20) 

Observations of the text based on the Sword Bible Study Method: 

• What do we learn from the passage about God?: After appearing to Mary M and Mary (mother of Jesus), Jesus then appears to the "eleven" disciples (everyone except Judas who had yet to be replaced see Acts 1) - v14a. Jesus then rebukes the disciples for their initial unbelief and hardness of heart regarding news of the resurrection as shared by Mary M, Mary, Cleopas, and his traveling companion - v14b.  Jesus charges His disciples to share the gospel globally and to the whole of creation - v16.  Jesus will provide miraculous signs to accompany salvation and those who believe - confirming that salvation is a work of God - vv17-18, 20 (see also Ephesians 2:8-9).  After the resurrection, Jesus ascends into Heaven to be seated at the right hand of God - v19 - but He will remain (Holy Spirit) with the disciples as they embark on the mission given to them to share the gospel globally - v20.
• What do we learn from the passage about people?: There will be periods when our faith will be tested and weakened, yet Jesus wants us to maintain faith so as to not fall away.  We can take heart because Jesus has overcome the world - John 16:33.  
• Is there anything from the passage God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid,Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): While the disciples temporary unbelief and lack of trust in God is sinful, it is forgiven.  Scripture shares that there is unforgivable sin - see Matthew 12:31-32, Mark 3:28-30. God wants us to believe and to share the gospel globally - all true belief and salvation is accompanied by miraculous signs as believers bear spiritual fruit for abiding in God as directed in John 15:1-10.  We must obey the charge to share the gospel - locally and globally.

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Mark 6:7-13. Excerpts from the commentary's for the third (of four) division (vv10-11): 

• The title for the third division is "Go Where You Are Welcomed and Move On When Rejected."
• The commentary emphasizes how the text shares how there will be times when we share the Gospel that it is rejected....if only for now.  Before we move on the shaking of dust from our feet from the text represents "a merciful prophetic act" that warns people of the consequences of rejecting God.   
•  We are referred to Ezekiel 33:1-20 where it shares how thinking of oneself as good and living righteously is insufficient - as not a single person cannot claim to be without sin (1 John 1:8). The text of Ezekiel shares how we must share from the gospel both how Jesus saves (now and for eternity) and how one is slave to sin and condemned if God is rejected. 

Warnings about rejection of God must be done mercifully however - see also Jude 22-23 where it shares how we are to "have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh." John Piper has a great word on here on DesiringGod.com how if fear alone is the only motivator to drive someone into the arms of Christ for salvation - "so be it."  Sometimes our act of mercy is to emphasize the punishment....

Malachi 4:1-6

But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. Malachi 4:2

I continue my study of the last four books of the Old Testament, having already covered Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and most of Malachi.  My study leans on the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series volume which covers these books. This morning I continue with Malachi 4:1-6, focusing on a commentary-assisted review of 4:2, the commentary's second division for the text.  Title and excerpts from the commentary for this division:

• The Rising of the Sun and the Vindication for God’s People: "When the Lord comes, He will bring perfect, righteous judgment with Him similar to the rising of the sun. His appearance will be both a blessing and a curse."  The use of "sun of righteousness" in this verse "is the only occurrence of in the entire Bible.  It conveys images of the brilliant morning sun projecting rays and providing warmth and comfort to those privileged to find solace under it. Malachi reveals that the sun of righteousness will rise also “with healing in its wings.” In Malachi this sun is not an inanimate object, but a person. It is God Himself. It is the manifest presence of God....Malachi states the sun of righteousness will appear with healing in His garments; that is, His arrival will be associated with the healing and restoring of His people."  This healing is both physical and spiritual - and the prophecy in this verse refers to Christ. 
  

All of humanity needs both a physical and spiritual healing.  We all decay and ultimately die.  We also all sin and scripture shares how the wage of sin is death (see Romans 3:23, 1 John 1:8, and Romans 6:23).  Those who fear God, confess their sin and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior will be saved (Romans 10:10). Those who do not fear and accept God as Savior will be thrown into the lake of fire and condemned eternally. It is certainly not pleasant to know that there are some who will be condemned eternally - therefore God tells us in Jude 22-23 "to have mercy on those who doubt, snatching them from the fire."  At the same time, believers can take great comfort in knowing how God will heal both physically and spiritually.  My 16 year old son Dustin has Down Syndrome, is partially verbal, and on the lower end of function.  I pray with him before he goes to bed and I tell him that I love him, as does his mom and his big brother.  Most importantly, I tell him that Jesus loves him, more than I or anyone else ever will.  While I used to worry about whether I would see Dustin in Heaven, based on readings (including here and here) over the past several years, I am confident that I will and this of course means Dustin will not have any cognitive disabilities (see Revelation 21:4) and our time together (eternity) in Heaven will be a joyous one indeed where we will gather with other friends and loved ones who will also be saved.  This is certainly worthy of leaping for joy like calves from the stall.

 Malachi 3:13-18

I return to my study of the last four books of the Old Testament, having already covered Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and most of Malachi.  My study leans on the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary series volume which covers these books. This morning my focus is an unassisted review of Malachi 3:13-18.  Here, Malachi records God's message to Israel portrayed as God's response to two of His own rhetorical questions where He rightly judges Israel for "speaking against Him" and for doubting "the profit of keeping His charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of Hosts" in v13-15.  V15 describes how God repeats back the thoughts among the faithful who don't see God's justice, even among the nation of Israel itself as they see "the arrogant blessed," and "evildoers [who] prosper [despite how] they put God to the test and...escape."  The good news in the text, starting in v16, is how "those who feared the Lord spoke with one another," and the implication is that at least some of them confessed and repented of their sin as "the Lord paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before Him of those who feared the Lord and esteemed His name."  In v17, God makes another of His awesome promises for those who fear the Lord that "they shall be mine, [and] spare[d from eternal damnation]." The text for today ends with an ominous prophecy and warning where God shares another promise that there will be a day - Judgement Day - when all will be held accountable for their deeds, the wicked will be held condemned and the righteous will be spared (based on this book of remembrance).  See also this post from DesiringGod.com.  Believers of today should take note of how we can easily be rightly accused of the same sins of Israel from the book of Malachi.  Confess and repent of these sins and turn towards the Lord.  Non-believers should also take note and seek a God full of grace and mercy who saves - Jesus Christ.  Come to Him and be saved!

I agree with this post on DesiringGod.com that states that Holy Week is the most important week in all of history. While Holy Week and Easter have passed, I do want to read to completion John Piper's 50-day devotional Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die. Today I read reason #47: To Rescue Us from Final Judgment.  The devotion today reminds believers of what awaits those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of Jesus Christ - eternal damnation and destruction "away from the presence of the Lord."  It is a sobering and frightful reality and one that should animate non-believers to turn to Him and believers to live with the end in mind - as we never know when we will be called home or when Jesus returns for a second time (see Matthew 25:13).  Piper refers us to Hebrews 10:27, 12:28-29, Matthew 3:7, 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9, and Revelation 14:10-11 for text that gives us a glimpse into this sobering reality.  Even for believers, Piper shares that "[u]ntil we feel some measure of dread about God’s future wrath, we will probably not grasp the sweetness with which the early church savored the saving work of Christ in the future" - see 1 Thessalonians 1:10.  Piper continues, writing that "Jesus Christ, and he alone, can save us from the wrath to come. Without him, we will be swept away forever."  Believers are encouraged to take comfort in knowing that Christ will be our shield and for this we should "exult in [this] future grace."  Amen!

I agree with this post on DesiringGod.com that states that Holy Week is the most important week in all of history. As such, I continue with one of the recommendations from the post to prepare for Holy Week, which is to read John Piper's 40-day devotional Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die. Today I read reason #19: To Give Eternal Life to All Who Believe on Him.  Here, John Piper emphasizes how, from the very beginning (in the Garden of Eden), God designed human life to live forever.  Piper refers us to Solomon's words from Ecclesiastes 3:11 then shares: "[w]e are created in God’s image, and God loves life and lives forever. We were made to live forever. And we will." Yet, at the same time, Piper clarifies how "we" is reserved for believers, while those who treat "God with indifference or contempt" await a far different fate: eternal damnation.  Scripture of course makes this clear as Piper points us to John 3:36 and Matthew 25:46.  Piper then points to Mark 9:47-48 where Jesus warns humanity that the influence of sin is so dangerous in our lives in terms of how it separates us from God that we should treat sin very seriously lest we allow it to carry us into unbelief and subsequent eternal damnation.  Piper then contrasts the eternal damnation to eternal life awaiting believers: "as hell is the worst outcome of this life, so “eternal life” is the best." While eternity in Heaven with Jesus is something believers will not fully comprehend until we die and return to our true home with Him, Piper concludes the devotion by sharing a few remarks about what awaits believers: "all sin and all sadness will be gone. All that is evil and harmful in this fallen creation will be removed. All that is good—all that will bring true and lasting happiness—will be preserved and purified and intensified. We will be changed so that we are capable of dimensions of happiness that were inconceivable to us in this life. “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined . . . God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9 [see also Isaiah 64:4]). It is true every moment of life, now and always: For those who trust Christ the best is yet to come. We will see the all-satisfying glory of God."  Rejoice in the gift of faith and eternal life - repent and believe!

I continue my study of the last four books of the OT (complete: Zephaniah, Haggai; to complete: Zechariah, Malachi) - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For today, my focus is an unassisted review of Zechariah 12:1, which the commentary outlines as the first of three divisions for the text 12:1-13:1 (12:1, 12:2-9, 12:10-13:1).  Here, God gives Zechariah a message to deliver about Israel's future.  But before Zechariah is to give this message in detail, God wants to ensure Israel is aware of who He is so that there is no mistake about that He reigns and is provident of all.  This has both negative and positive implications.  For those who reject God, they are literally playing with fire as their ultimate destination is eternity in Hell. For those who believe, we must understand that just because God is full of grace and He forgives, we must not go on sinning (see the end of Romans 5 and 6:1 in particular).  Instead we must have reverent fear of God and this fear should be seen as a preservative to keep us from sin. At the same time, Zechariah 12:1 should be see as an all powerful God able to do anything and if He intercedes (Romans 8:34) for us and fights for us (Exodus 14:14), He is all that we need.

I continue my study of the last four books of the OT (complete: Zephaniah, Haggai; to complete: Zechariah, Malachi) - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Zechariah 11:15-17, which the commentary outlines as the fourth of four divisions for the text 10:1-11:17 (10:1-12, 11:1-3, 11:4-14, 11:15-17). The commentary shares how God asked Zechariah to portray a good shepherd in the previous division (see post yesterday), but in this division is asked to portray a "foolish, evil and worthless shepherd."  It prophecies how although Jesus arrives and fulfills prophecy as the Promised King, He is not recognized as such by the Jewish elders and leaders.  These shepherds (and false teachers) do not save as Jesus does but instead "take advantage of people and harm them mercilessly."  The commentary shares how many conservative scholars "say that the ultimate expression of the foolish shepherd is the Antichrist of the end times, who will deceive and abuse not only Israel but the entire world (Revelation 13:7)."  Believers must be constantly reminded of how this Antichrist is real and he is on the prowl looking to devour those who are lost - see 1 Peter 5:8. Once again, as the commentary emphasizes yesterday, we are encouraged to follow the only Shepherd that truly leads and saves - Jesus Christ.  We must also follow the words of Jude who exhort believers to "have mercy on those who doubt...snatching them out of the fire" (Jude 22-23).

I continue my study of the last four books of the OT (complete: Zephaniah, Haggai; to complete: Zechariah, Malachi) - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Zechariah 11:4-14, which the commentary outlines as the third of four divisions for the text 10:1-11:17 (10:1-12, 11:1-3, 11:4-14, 11:15-17).  While believers should always look at scripture and see how it points to Jesus, I struggled with the text today and leaned into the commentary, which shares how "[i]n essence, God is commanding Zechariah to become a living picture of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. Apart from the life of the Lord Jesus, it is nearly impossible to interpret Zechariah 11:4-14."  The commentary describes how God led His people by "three shepherds (v8) and how these three shepherds represent the three types of leaders God gave His people - kings, priests, and prophets.  In one way or another all of these leaders let God down and failed His people - earthly leaders who are broken and sinful who then lead the people astray (see post yesterday).  V8b points to how even though Jesus came and fulfilled prophecy as the promised Messiah, He was rejected by his own people. The commentary also describes another aspect of the messianic prophecy in this text (vv12-13) and how the text here parallels how Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus for the same amount of money - thirty pieces of silver (see also Matthew 26:15). Building on yesterday's post the commentary concludes with this warning: "[w]e must not reject Jesus, because He’s the Shepherd we need the most. If we reject Jesus, He will ultimately reject us (Matthew 23:37-38). Rejecting Jesus leaves us with the only alternative: following shepherds who will hurt us. When we refuse to follow the Lord as our Shepherd, we will inevitably follow someone or something that will lead us to destruction."

Building on my last two posts yesterday and the day before, Zechariah provides God's people with warnings about leaders who worship false gods and preach false teachings.  Of course, all sin and remain in bondage to this sin now and for eternity (in Hell) unless saved - and of course the Good News of Jesus saves!  False gods and teaching are pervasive and we are warned throughout scripture - 1 Peter 5:8 where we are warned us that Satan is simply waiting on us for an opportunity to pounce - and believers are encouraged to remain alert. 1 Timothy 6:6-10 warns us about false teachers. Believers we are encouraged to remain in Jesus - see John 15:1-11.

I continue my study of Zephaniah using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Zephaniah 2:4-15, which is the text for the first division for the next chapter of the commentary, which includes two divisions.  The first division covers 2:4-15 and the commentary further breaks this down into nine subdivisions - and I tackle the first five today.

Across both the two main divisions and all subdivisions - covering Zephaniah 2:4-3:8 - the commentary shares the following main idea: "[i]n light of God’s judgment, God’s people must seek the Lord in humility or face destruction."  The commentary heading for the first division - covering Zephaniah 2:4-15 - is entitled: The Enemies of God’s People Will Be Judged because of Their Pride.

• The land of the Gentiles will become the feed for the animals of God’s people (2:6): "The specific judgment is that [the enemies of God's people's] land would become pastureland for the people of God....Verses 7 and following explain the future possession of God’s people. This would have been most offensive to the enemies of God’s people. Perceiving themselves to be superior physically, not to mention wealthier, they would have found it absurd that the nation of Judah would overtake them. This is, however, what God decreed because of their insolence and arrogance. In fact, verse 7 gives a foretaste of what was coming for the people of Judah. Yes, they had turned their backs on God, and yes, they were defiantly disobedient, but God was offering them redemption, and it appears, in verse 7, that God believed they would return to Him. He tells us that He would, in fact, return to them." 
  
• The land of the Gentiles will be given to God’s people (2:7): "Verse 7 tells us that God will be doing just such a work here among His people, and part of that restoration will be the settling of the enemies of Judah under the authority of Judah. Out of the ashes will rise this restored people, dedicated to God and enjoying life as He intended it. The resurrecting work of God is intended to help humanity flourish."
  
• The Gentiles’ taunting of God’s people has incurred His wrath (2:8): "It is most likely evidence of the enemies of God’s people taunting them about their God. Their taunting is most likely a blow at the character of God and therefore is much, much worse than simple name-calling. The mocking of the people of Judah may have been much like the psalmist described: “My adversaries taunt me, as if crushing my bones, while all day long they say to me, ‘Where is your God?’” (Psalm 42:10)....While God gives much grace, at the end of the day those who disparage and attempt to challenge God’s character will fail. Not only have they taunted God’s people, but they have also “threatened their territory.” They not only have disregarded God, but they have attempted to usurp God’s authority by encroaching on the territory that God has given to His people." 
  
• All the people who have opposed God and His people will bow before Him (2:11): "Ultimately, inherent in this issue is the fundamental question of the gospel: what will you do with God? In the end, everyone will ultimately respond with the same declaration, “Jesus is Lord,” as Scripture reminds us. However, Scripture also affirms that most of those who will ever live will make their declaration through forced submission. Only those who voluntarily declare that Jesus is Lord, in this life, will enjoy the benefits afforded to the children of God.  Those who reject Him will not escape the declaration that Jesus is Lord; instead they will find it to be a sobering and terrifying moment as they declare it to be so, but they do so too late, having missed their opportunity to submit before God. Scripture teaches that their just recompense, then, will be eternal judgment. Verse 11 reflects that truth." 
  
• God will use His own people to destroy the Gentiles (2:9): "Verse 9 points out that these enemies would eventually be reminiscent of Sodom and Gomorrah. They would be a “perpetual wasteland,” according to the prophet. Their property and land would become the possession of the people of God." 
  

Be one of God's remnant that is saved from eternal damnation - confess your sin and declare Jesus as Your Lord and Savior!

I continue my study of Ecclesiastes using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for this book. My focus this morning is an unassisted reading of Ecclesiastes 9 and how the text relates to the second division of the commentary for chapters 7-11: Sin Leads to Brokenness and Meaninglessness.  Vv2-3 and v6 share of chapter 9 describe the futility of living apart from God.  When we live apart from God - not confessing that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior - we remain slave to sin, we die, and then we are eternally damned.  This is harsh but it is truth. Yet Jesus is the living water and the one who came for all of humanity as the Incarnate Son of God and Savior for all. Confess and believe!

I continue my study of Ecclesiastes using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for this book. My focus this morning is Ecclesiastes 7 and how the takeaway of this text relates to the second division of the commentary for chapters 7-11: Sin Leads to Brokenness and Meaninglessness. First we should all acknowledge that since The Fall (Genesis 3), all of humanity is sinful (see also Romans 3:23, 1 John 1:8).  Next, sin is bondage (John 8:34-35) and leads to eternal damnation (Romans 6:23).  Solomon's words in the text today reinforce how we are all sinful and how it is pervasive among us.  Be saved by the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ (John 10:7-11)!

 It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”  Jude 14-15

I proceed with my study of Jude using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for this book.  Today, my study consists of a review of Jude 11-16, with a focus on a commentary-assisted review of the third division per the commentary - vv14-15 - which is titled God Condemns the Ungodly Because It Is Their Destiny.  The commentary points out how the condemnation of the ungodly was written about long ago when Enoch (7th from Adam) shared his prophesy which Jude references from the "nonbiblical book of 1 Enoch 1:9, affirming the truth of this statement without endorsing the whole of the book as divine or special revelation."  The commentary continues by sharing that God condemns false teachers "prior...to the flood."  About use the word ungodly four times in vv14-15, the commentary then shares how God feels about "those who live without reverence and respect for God. They walk in an ungodly manner, with evil deeds, they think in ungodly ways, and they talk with ungodly and harsh words."  The commentary concludes by sharing that "[n]o evil action, thought, or word will go unpunished, nor will it be erased from the divine memory (Proverbs 11:21; Nahum 1:3). These men and those like them will have no defense, no retrial, no appeal. As Romans 3:19 says, every mouth will be silenced." Once again, believers should be motivated to share the gospel as much as possible such that many can be saved.

I proceed with my study of Jude using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for this book.  Today, my study consists of a review of Jude 11-16, with a focus on an unassisted review of the third division per the commentary - vv14-15. Here in these verses, we continue to see how harshly God will deal with the false teachers described by Jude.  Jude writes how Enoch prophesied about the judgement of the wicked; while we don't know who specifically Enoch is referring to here, we do know that Enoch's judgement of the wicked is inclusive of those judged by Jude given Jude refers to those judged by Enoch as "also about these," implying there was a larger category of wicked to be condemned.  The sins of the wicked condemned by Jude (through reference to Enoch's prophecy) are described as deeds of ungodliness, committed by ungodly people in an ungodly way.  The word ungodly or ungodliness is used four times in two verses making it clear that God is not pleased with the false teachers described by Jude throughout his letter.  On the other hand, we can trust the prophecy of judgement by Enoch because Enoch "walked with God" (Genesis 5:24) and "pleased God" (Hebrews 11:5).
