But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.”

Jude

But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you.” Jude 9

I proceed with my study of Jude using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for this book.  Today, my study consists of a review of Jude 8-10, with a focus on a commentary-assisted review of the second division per the commentary - v9.  The commentary first describes this text as "one of the most mysterious and difficult verses in the Bible to interpret. Its application is easier to grasp, but the exact meaning Jude intended is elusive and even troubling to some."  The commentary then gets to the actors in the text including Moses (leader of Israel) and Michael (see post yesterday).  Next, the commentary shares how this verse, according to most Biblical scholars, refers to a non canonical book The Assumption of Moses where it is hypothesized that Satan perhaps sought Moses body as a relic of idol worship, or perhaps for other reasons.  We are encouraged to lean on sources to understand scripture where-ever the sources may take us - this does not add or subtract from truth but gives us greater insight into truth.  Regardless of what Satan may have been doing here - we can all agree that Jude's writings - like all scripture - is divinely inspired and perfect.  Most important here for Bible readers and believers is the application and that is more clear and the commentary emphasizes how (like my post yesterday) believers are to understand our "place in God's economy."  The commentary shares: "As great as [Michael] is, he knows his proper place in God’s plan—something false teachers have failed to grasp. He is not his own authority, master, or lord. He does not set policy and make up the rules as he wishes. No arrogance, haughtiness, rebellion, or pride runs through his angelic veins.  Michael's words to rebuke Satan come from Zechariah 3:2 (where Satan is also rebuked). The commentary concludes by sharing that "[o]ur authority for spiritual warfare is in God, not in ourselves. In our own strength the devil will defeat us every time. Perhaps Michael could have taken on the devil, given who he is, but he did not because he knew the true source of his authority. In our case, to battle Satan without help is sheer folly." Help us have confidence in God and not in ourselves.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are a great God who loves me and who helps me understand scripture and how it speaks to me - I seek to understand Truth and not add or subtract to truth so You give me my church, my brothers and sisters in Christ, and other blessings to sharpen my understanding of Truth. Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of such love.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

Every word of God proves true[.]...Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar.

Proverbs 30-31

Every word of God proves true[.]...Do not add to his words, lest he rebuke you and you be found a liar. Proverbs 30:5a-6

I continue my study of Proverbs with my final entry for week 10 from my study workbook, which focuses on Proverbs 30-31:9.  My focus for today is the commentary and a review of the text for this week.  The commentary provides six themes expressed in the text for this week, including:

  • how God is our shield and refuge (Proverbs 30:5b)
  • how scripture describes the ideal king, yet only Jesus meets this ideal (Proverbs 31:2-9)
  • how, even though we may claim to be, none of us are clean (we all sin), and Jesus is the only one who can wash us clean (Proverbs 30:12)
  • how barrenness in life ultimately leads to hope for those who believe (Proverbs 30:15-16)
  • how God's Word is perfect and how we are not to add to or subtract from it (Proverbs 30:5a)
  • how God works, often in contrast to how the world works, including how Jesus came as a conquering King but died on the cross (Proverbs 30:24-28)

The more I study the Word of God the more I see the truth in Proverbs 30:5a - how God's Word is perfect and how we are not to add to or subtract from it. The commentary also points us to Psalm 18:30 and Deuteronomy 4:2 and 12:32.  Through such text I am encouraged to further "incline my ear [to] hear the words of the wise, [and to]...apply [my[ heart to [God's] knowledge[.]" Indeed, I am experiencing the blessing of having God's Word "within me...and ready on [my] lips (Proverbs 22:17-18)."

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves and You provide Your Word, which is a lamp unto my feet and it is indeed pleasant to keep them within me and ready on my lips!  Thank You Jesus for Your Word!  I am not deserving of Your Word, nor any of the blessings You provide to help me understand Your Word - certainly the Holy Spirit, commentary, teachers, brothers and sisters in Christ who help sharpen my understanding, etc.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of these incredible blessings.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You. I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.

Revelation 22

I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll. v18-19

The Bible is God's word and indeed God Himself - perfect in all ways.  John is relaying the message from Jesus that we must be careful to quote or use the Bible partially, or to add to the Bible.  This message is elsewhere (with study credit to John McArthur*)
- *Deuteronomy 4:2 > Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you.
- *Deuteronomy 12:32 > See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it.
- *Proverbs 30:5-6 > Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.  Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
- *Jeremiah 26:2 > This is what the Lord says: Stand in the courtyard of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people of the towns of Judah who come to worship in the house of the Lord. Tell them everything I command you; do not omit a word.

See also Luke 1:37, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, James 2:10

We must study the Word and focus on knowing ALL of it...this is God's desire.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God and Your Word is perfect as it reveals Your Character and I love studying Your Word and spending time with You.  You are my God and my guide...my Lord and Savior.  Thank You for being so patient with me and so full of mercy and compassion.  Please forgive me for my laziness in not being the man You intend for me...at work, at home, as a father, etc.  Help me overcome such sloth and turn towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, mind and strength.  Help me love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give me strength.  Give Lisa strength.  Help my desire for You grow and grow.  Please heal and cure Lisa of her cancer.  Help me lead and serve Lisa, Zach and Dustin.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, “I am with you, declares the LORD.”

 Haggai 1:13

Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD’s message, “I am with you, declares the LORD.”  Haggai 1:13

I resume my study of Haggai - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For this morning, my focus is commentary-assisted review of Haggai 1:13, which is the first subdivision of 1:13-15 and the title of this subdivision from the commentary is The Messenger of the Lord Delivered the Message of the Lord.  This one verse clearly communicates two things: (1) Haggai is a messenger of the Lord, appointed for a specific purpose - to deliver His words to God's people; (2) God's message first and foremost is one of encouragement - that He is with us.  On this latter point, we should recognize the disobedience of God's people and God - full of grace and love for His people - wanted unity with His people but this could only be through repentance, which the people then offered (see verse 12).  While much text is brought to mind that emphasizes the same message, Luke 15:11-31 and the story of the Prodigal Son most prominently comes to mind.   Key excerpts from the commentary for 1:13:

  • God appoints fallible humans such as prophets and pastors to deliver His message to us - we should understand that these people are divinely appointed and the message is from God both are linked.
  • "While the messenger is not God Himself, the messenger represents God, he speaks for God, if you will. In fact, the word messenger is translated across Scripture in other contexts as “angel,” “envoy,” or “ambassador.” It conveys the idea that the messengers have no inherent authority or truth in and of themselves, but they are to be listened to and honored because they carry the weight of the One who sent them. What’s more, when they convey the message, they convey a message that is not their own, but a message that comes from God Himself."
  • Pastors must recognize as well that they are stewards of God's words and not take this lightly nor stray outside of God's desire and intent for the task given to him. He should not add or subtract from the message. Any messenger or pastor should be very intimate with the message being delivered - for example a sermon on any given text. Humility is key - messengers and pastors must focus on God not on themselves and their motives or desires.

These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.

Jude

These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage. Jude 16

I proceed with my study of Jude using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for this book.  Today, my study consists of a review of Jude 11-16, with a focus on a commentary-assisted review of the fourth division per the commentary - v16 - which is titled God Condemns the Ungodly Because of Their Deeds.  The commentary emphasizes how the text describes how our speaking reflects our heart condition: "the tongue is that organ of the body intimately connected to the heart and its desires" (see also James 3). The first word the text uses to describe false teachers is how they are grumblers or complainers.  When people grumble or complain - as the commentary compares to Israel in the wilderness - they are ultimately doing so at God because it is He who is in control.  We should not grumble or complain - see also this resource. The commentary warns us that complaints and grumblings in the church is a corrosive influence: it "is like a cancer and is deadly to an effective ministry and a healthy church life. It leaves them always judgmental and without joy."  The commentary then moves on to how the text describes those who follow their own sinful desires and how this is the source of their negative talk.  The insatiable desires of one focused solely on self runs counter to how we are to deny oneself and focus on satisfying God.  Finally, the commentary highlights how the text describes arrogant false teachers who make bold claims that are not scriptural - we must be careful to not add or subtract from the Word.

[H]e looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him.

Mark 3:1-6

[H]e looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against him, how to destroy him. Mark 3:5-6

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, I focus on an unassisted review of Mark 3:1-6, which is the text for the next chapter of the commentary.  Observations from the text using the Sword Bible Study Method:

  • What do we learn from the passage about God?: God does not seek strict rules around worship or the Sabbath.  His intent with the Sabbath is for God's people to be together in corporate worship.  The Bible does not say God's people shall not heal anyone on the Sabbath - note Jesus' anger and grief at the Pharisees hardness of heart (v5).  See also Galatians 5:22-23 where Paul notes there is no law for believers that demonstrate fruit of the Spirit.
  • What do we learn from the passage about people?: The Pharisees are not simply history - they represent any group of people that seeks legalism or elitism in church such that they know the proper way to worship.  Such arrogance creeps in the church in more subtle ways with intolerance about different worship styles - we should be mindful of different styles.  See also this article per DesiringGod.com.
  • Is there anything from the passage God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey)?: We should be careful to seek and know God's intent - carefully studying His Word and gaining guidance from church leadership on difficult questions where it is less clear.  We should not add or subtract anything from the Word.  We should never tire of doing good works with an intent to glorify God.

See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it.

Deuteronomy 12

See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it. v32

The greatest commandment is to love the Lord Your God with all of your heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22).  God provides for other commands as well and how we live in relationship to God, others, and the church is clearly laid out among scripture.

Moses communicates to the Israelites that they are to be careful to worship the one true God in ways that others worship false gods.  Yahweh is a jealous God and we must out of respect fear His wrath.

Lord Jesus, please help me worship You as You intend - with all of my heart, soul, and mind, and to not add to or subtract how You desire for me to be in relationship with You, others, and the church.

And Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not tell your messengers whom you sent to me, ‘If Balak should give me his house full of silver and gold, I would not be able to go beyond the word of the LORD, to do either good or bad of my own will.

 Numbers 24:12-13

And Balaam said to Balak, “Did I not tell your messengers whom you sent to me, ‘If Balak should give me his house full of silver and gold, I would not be able to go beyond the word of the LORD, to do either good or bad of my own will. Numbers 24:12-13

I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today - Numbers 24:12-13 - we see how God continues to work and speak through Balaam the pagan prophet, and Balak's rage because "it pleased the LORD to bless Israel."  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

  • What do we learn from the text about God?: God works through all of creation as He is the Creator - see also Colossians 1:15-17.  This includes working and speaking through the pagan prophet Balaam who was hired by Balak to curse Israel as they sought to inhabit the land currently occupied by the Amorites - see Numbers 22.  The Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit) appeared to Balaam in the wilderness and spoke through Balaam in vv3-9 sharing how God loves Israel, how He sees her as beautiful, treasured, blessed, powerful, and how she will overcome her adversaries.
  • What do we learn from the text about people?: In vv10-11, we see Balak enraged over Balaam's discourse, yet Balaam, in vv12-13, reinforces (see also Numbers 22:18) how he is clear that God's word is more valuable than any amount of silver or gold Balak could give him.  This is a message all believers should heed - that we find God and His Word more valuable than any treasure on earth.  See also Psalm 19:10, 119:72, Proverbs 8:10.  Don't also miss how Balaam shares how we should not add to or subtract from God's Word - he will not "go beyond the Word of the LORD", an explicit exhortation not to twist God's Word to suit our own desires or will.
  • Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Don't twist God's Word to suit your own desires or will.  Claim the promise that God's Word (and Himself) is more valuable than any earthly treasure.  Follow the example of the psalmists, David, and Solomon, who valued God more than anything.  Seek God first (and you will find Him - Jeremiah 29:13).

But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge. I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.

 1 John 2

But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.  I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth. 1 John 2:20-21

This morning, I continue my study of 1,2,3 John using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for these books. My study today focuses on a commentary-assisted review of 1 John 2:18-27.

Per the commentary for this text:

Main idea: There have always been those, and more will come, who actively oppose Christ and the gospel; Christians must resist such error and cling to the truth of God as revealed by the Spirit in the Scriptures.

Excerpt from introduction:

  • John seeks for believers to be on watch for signs that end times are near - and one of those signs is the antichrist, false teachers who deny God and seek to lead/deceive believers away from God. "[I]t is absolutely essential that we have a biblically balanced understanding of who the antichrists are and what the antichrists do."

Divisions:

  1. Antichrists Attack Christ (2:18): John is the only Bible author who uses the term antichrist, yet other authors in the Bible refer to the same figure, including Daniel ("the coming prince" - Daniel 9:27), and Paul ("the man of lawlessness" - 2 Thessalonians 2:3), and as the beast from the sea in Revelation 13:1-10. We are urged to live with a sense of urgency, not knowing when the second coming of Christ will appear and we are to be ready. We are also to be aware that during the end times (defined as the period between first and second coming of Christ) there will be those who serve as antichrists denying God and deceiving others, and then there will be the Antichrist who "comes at the end of the last hour. Jesus Himself warned us of all of this in Matthew 24:4-5,24-25." The antichrists that oppose Jesus who come before the final Antichrist "do not directly oppose Jesus." Instead they practice deception and seduction and they "redefine Him."  By "chipping" away at who He is, believers quickly lose sight of the One True God and begin following false Gods and their ways.  "This is the spirit of the antichrists, and it will attempt to lead you down the road of spiritual error that is a theological dead end....[B]e on the lookout for those who attack the biblical teachings about Christ. They will do you no good."
  2. Antichrists Abandon the Church (2:19,22-23): We are warned about "enemies within" the church.  We should recognize that antichrists who leave the church were never truly part of the church.  "Perseverance is the proof of possession. Defection from the fellowship gives evidence of a defective faith. That was certainly John’s perspective." Those who are truly saved persevere as part of the church.  We are referred to John 10:27-29 where Jesus refers to His followers as sheep who follow the shepherd when they hear His voice and how no one will be able to "snatch them out of His hand."  We must avoid the false belief that Jesus is significant but not preeminent and that not the Savior. This belief leads us away from the church.
  3. Antichrists Assault the Christian (2:20-21,24-27): Believers are equipped with the Holy Spirit and the Word of God to truly know God and to discern truth from falsehoods. If we abide in Him we can defend ourselves from the attacks of the antichrists. We must also be clear that we are not to add or subtract anything from God. "The false teachers will attempt to deceive you into thinking you need something more than Christ or something other than Christ."

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the One True God who gives me the Holy Spirit and Your Word and You protect me and save me.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of such blessings. But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children.

 Numbers 3:1-4

But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. Numbers 3:4a

I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today 3:1-4, the sons of Aaron as the Lord prepares to describe their duties as part of the priesthood.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

  • What do we learn from the text God?: God ordains specific people into the priesthood, and while in the New Testament, Jesus serves as the Great High Priest (see Hebrews 4:14-16) and believers can approach Him with confidence and go directly to God, specific individuals are called to serve in the priesthood as part of the church.  1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9 describe the attributes of those in the priesthood.
  • What do we learn from the text about people?: The text repeats Leviticus 10:1-2 where Nadab and Abihu offered unauthorized fire when not commanded to by the Lord.  "[F]ire came out from before the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD."  Nadab and Abihu are described as having no children in v4, so the remain sons of Aaron served in the priesthood.  In the Old Testament, ceremonial law was carefully followed.  What is interesting here is that Nadab and Abihu are far from the only ones who did not carefully follow ceremonial law by either commission or omission.  During Jesus' ministry, Jewish leadership accused Jesus of breaking laws based on what they added to the law, With the new covenant with Jesus, through His shed blood, Jesus fulfilled the law and did away with ceremonial law.  The moral law remains and first and foremost God requires our heart as the most important commandments (see Matthew 22:37-40) to love Him, then to love others.
  • Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Do not add to or subtract to the law neither for your own benefit or for the benefit or harm (judgement) of someone else.  Claim the promise that God cares about your heart - He desires mercy not sacrifice and that Jesus fulfilled the law so that we can approach Him confidently and directly without the need for a priest (or a sacrifice) on our behalf.  Obey the moral law - most importantly to love God and love others.

My Prayer: Father God, You are an awesome God who loves and saves.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of such blessings.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith. Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please continue to heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.

And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”

Numbers 20:1-13

And the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.” Numbers 20:12

I continue my study of Numbers, and in the text today - Numbers 20:1-13 - Miriam dies and is buried by the people in the wilderness, and Moses does not completely follow God instructions to bring water from the rock, and is subsequently punished harshly.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

  • What do we learn from the text about God?: God provides and comforts the people during their time of need - in the face of not having any water, God gave instructions to Moses (vv7-8) to use the staff (see also Numbers 17), and to command the rock to yield water.  Indeed God was able to yield water from the rock, despite Moses not following His instructions completely.  God's plan will not be thwarted.
  • What do we learn from the text about people?:  Alarmingly, we see the people grumbling, complaining, quarreling with, and rebelling against God - see vv2-5.  After all that God has done, including provide and cause both the earth to swallow up Korah's rebellion (Numbers 16) and a plague that killed 14,700, the people fail to trust in the LORD to provide water.  Instead of going to Moses and Aaron to intercede, the people grumble, complain, quarrel, and rebel.  Unless we abide in Him, we will not bear any fruit (John 15:1-10).  Key to the text today is how Moses fails to completely follow God's instructions in v8 to "tell" or command the rock to yield water - instead Moses strikes the rock twice (v11).  V12 describes God's harsh punishment to Moses as he will not be able to enter the Promised Land.  Perhaps one can see such punishment as harsh, but we must also remember that church leaders are held to a higher standard.
  • Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Do not grumble, complain, quarrel with, or rebel against church leadership as they are God's appointed leaders.  Church leaders should also be mindful how they are avoid not following God's commands - do not add to or subtract from His Word.  Claim the promise that God is Lord over all of Creation, He is faithful, and we can trust in Him to provide.  Follow the example of Jesus who trusted the Father and willingly laid down His life.  Love and trust in Him.

My Prayer: Father God, You of  are an awesome God who loves and saves.  I am not deserving of how You love and save.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin and turn towards You.

“You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!"

Mark 7:1-23

“You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition!" Mark  7:9

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Mark 7:1-23.  Excerpts from the second (of  three) division (vv9-13):

  • The title for the first division is: "Legalists Make Void the Word of God, Resulting in Spiritual Disobedience."
  • "Not all traditions are bad. They become bad when we put them on the same level as Scripture or in the place of Scripture. It is a “Bible-plus” kind of religion. In adding to the Bible, you for all practical purposes make void the Bible and nullify its truth and power in your life (v. 13). Jesus makes this crystal clear as He moves into round two with the Pharisees."
  • "They set aside what is the revealed Word of God and replace it with “made up” traditions of men....First, they teach the commands of men (v7). Then they leave the commands of God (v8). Next they reject the commands of God (v9). And finally they make void the Word of God (v13)."
  • Jesus responds to the Pharisees by referring us to Exodus 20:12, Deuteronomy 5:16, Exodus 21:17, and Leviticus 20:9 where the text commands us to honor our mother and father.
  • "However, the Pharisees created a theological loophole. They simply declared what they would have given to their parents “Corban,” a Hebrew term referring to “a gift dedicated to God.” This allowed them to dishonor their parents by neglecting their needs, but they still feel good about it because it was done in service to God."

God's Word is perfect and inerrant - and reinforcing the commentary, we should be very careful not to add to or subtract from the Word.  How do we do this?  First and foremost we study - voraciously - per Matthew 5:6 where we "hunger and thirst for righteousness." We should seek out wise Bible teachers and Gospel centered resources (i.e. commentaries) that shed light on and deepen our resources.  For example, the commentary's helpful context about a historical tradition of Corban is helpful to understand as a man-made tradition vs God's Word (see also this resource). Humility and prayer are also important as scriptural disciplines to draw near to God and to seek His will as He is the source of wisdom (see Proverbs 1:7).

My Prayer: Father God You are an awesome God who loves, saves, guides, directs and provides Your Word as a measure of and proof of all of these blessings - thank You!  I am not deserving of such blessings.  My sin is great and it continues..daily.

There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

2 Chronicles 5

There was nothing in the ark except the two tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb, where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt. v10

God's Word stands alone.  Nothing or no one is greater than God, God is the Word, and the Word is perfect.  As such we should be careful to interpret God's word for Truth.  We should be careful not to add to or subtract from the Word.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  I know that without You I would be lost and would be unable to do anything good.  Thank You Jesus for loving me and for rescuing me.  I am not worth such a God - especially so given You came to rescue me, knowing everything about me, including my sin.  Please forgive me for my selfishness.  Help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You do.

[Jesus Christ is the] Head [of the church], from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God.

Colossians 2:16-23

[Jesus Christ is the] Head [of the church], from whom the whole body, nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments, grows with a growth that is from God. Colossians 2:19

I continue my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today my focus is Colossians 2:16-23, where Paul explicitly warns against false teaching that has "no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh." Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

  • What do we learn from the text about God?: Vv16-17: Old Testament ceremonial law was only a shadow of things to come - namely Jesus Christ and the New Covenant based on his shed blood.  He came to fulfill the law and to establish this covenant with all those who believe - see also Romans 10:11-13 and Hebrews 8:5-6. V19: Jesus Christ is the Head (God) of the global church and all members (churches and their members/believers) are "nourished and knit together through its joints and ligaments...[and the church] grows with a growth that is from God."
  • What do we learn from the text about people?: Vv16-18, 20-23: Harkening back to my first post on Colossians where I shared a brief overview of Paul's purpose on writing to the church at Colosse, we are warned to - just as the Bereans did - examine (and hold fast to via faith in) scripture closely such that we have discernment to identify and not fall victim to trusting/following false teaching.  See also this blog post for more on the Colossian Heresy.  One of the Colossians' false teachings included how Old Testament Jewish ceremonial law remained intact when we know that Jesus came to fulfill the law and to establish a new covenant based on faith not obedience to ceremonial law.  See also this post.  Paul explicitly and accurately describes these false teachings as things that may "puff" people up "without reason by [their] sensuous mind[s]," as having "an appearance of wisdom in promoting self-made religion and asceticism and severity," and most damning of all, as having zero "value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh."  This indulgence of the flesh is Satan seeking to get between you and God by warping your understanding of who Jesus is such that you not follow the One True God Jesus Christ.
  • Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid falling prey to false teaching that is of "no value in stopping the indulgence of the flesh."  Claim the promise that only Jesus saves and that He alone gives new life. Follow the example of Paul and the Bereans to seek God with all of your heart, soul, and mind, to test scripture, and to seek discernment such that you can identify truth vs false teaching.  Follow God alone and do not add to or subtract from scripture as it is God's perfect Word.

These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.

 Jude 1:14-16

These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage. Jude 1:16

I continue my quick study of Jude (given it's only one chapter), and my focus today is Jude 1:14-16, as Jude uses an extra-biblical source to argue against the false teaching threatening the church.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

  • What do we learn from the text about God?: God's Word is perfect - and we are exhorted not to add to or subtract from His Word in ways that Jude's opponents do (to whom he addresses as false teachers) - see also Psalm 18:30, 19:7, and 2 Timothy 3:16.  At the same time, within scripture both Jude and Paul use extra-biblical sources against their opponents and in the text today Jude is apparently quoting the Jewish book of Enoch to warn against how the ungodly are to be condemned - see John Piper on this use of extra-biblical sources.  This is not a contradiction of scripture (where an author adds to scripture) as the condemnation spoken of in this extra-biblical source is wholly consistent (and supports) with vast examples of text warning of the coming judgement of God when He returns.  This is a case of Jude using his opponents' own arguments against them.
  • What do we learn from the text about people?: We know that God opposes the proud (see James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5, and Proverbs 3:34) and here Jude is addressing arrogant false teachers who are easily identified by those who know Truth - and one way in which they are identified is by their persistent patterns of sin.  V16 shares how these false teachers to whom Jude is addressing seek to "gain advantage."  Arrogance and selfishness are two of the most spoken about sins in scripture - instead God seeks for us to be humble.
  • Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): We are to avoid selfishness and arrogance.  Claim the promise that we (believers) are sealed and saved.  Follow the example of Jude and others who "contend for the faith," by defending Truth and helping others discern Truth.  Seek God with all of Your heart, soul, and mind, and love Him and others - be humble.

Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law. There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners who lived among them.

Joshua 8

Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law. There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners who lived among them. v34-35

Just as God is perfect, the Bible is perfect - as is God (see also John 1).  God wants us to read the whole Bible and KNOW it.  We must not to add to or subtract from it - it becomes important for many reasons, including that it enables us to put on the full armor of God.  Most importantly, when we know the Bible we know God.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God, and Your Word is perfect and I am blessed to have Your Word where I can spend time with You, understand more about You and Your will for my life.  Thank You Jesus - I am not worth such blessings.  I am harsh with my words and thoughts.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal and cure Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo. Stick to the Plan Man!

Today's Reading
Deuteronomy 4:1-2

It did not take long in my reading this morning to stop and pause given how I was struck with the following:

1 Hear now, O Israel, the decrees and laws I am about to teach you. Follow them so that you may live and may go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you.

What I get from this is that God's plan is perfect, his laws are perfect, and his guidance is perfect for us - we don't need anything more and we don't need anything less. This is a matter of our love, faith, trust and obedience to Him.

My Prayer: Lord, you are perfect in every way. Forgive me when I think how you may not be perfect or how you may not be enough - oh how foolish this is! Thank for your love and guidance and mercy - even though I don't deserve it. Help me love you more, trust you more, and follow you more. And yes, help me be in more communication with you - in prayer and otherwise.
