And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”

 Mark 1:21-28

And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” Mark 1:27

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, I focus on an unassisted review of Mark 1:21-28, which is the text for the next chapter of the commentary. Here's what we see in the text:

  • At the start of His ministry, with his first four disciples - Simon, Andrew, James, and John - Jesus "immediately" went to the synagogue in Capernaum on the Sabbath and "was teaching."  The word immediately implies urgency similar to how Simon, Andrew, James, and John felt called to immediately follow Jesus.  Believers should act with urgency based on Jesus' call to serve.
  • Those in the synagogue were "astonished" at Jesus' teaching.  He taught with "authority" unlike anything they had seen - of course Jesus is the Incarnate Son sent by God, so this is no surprise!
  • Even the unclean spirit recognized Jesus as the "Holy One of God."
  • Jesus' rebuke of the unclean spirit is one of His first miracles
  • Witnesses were all amazed and they began to wonder who Jesus is.  Jesus' "fame" spread throughout the regions surrounding Galilee.

The question in my mind is whether we as believers, if we are truly being the hands and feet of Jesus, are acting in such way for people to see Jesus in us - mercy, service, love, etc.  People should be attracted to us in a similar way to those in Capernaum who were all amazed at Jesus - we are NOT Jesus but we should be LIKE Jesus and becoming more like Him every day as this is sanctification in action.  If not, this is an opportunity for us as believers to examine whether we are truly abiding in Him and for us to desperately call out to God for us to help us abide in Him.

Comment and discuss this post.

My Prayer: Father God, You are amazing and You are the One True God who saves, who transforms hearts and lives, and molds them into more of Your image. Thank You Father God for saving me and transforming my heart and life - I am not deserving as my sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please continue to heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Mark 7

Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone. But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.” v36-37

It says in the MacArthur commentary that Jesus "did not intend" to have a public ministry for the gentiles.  Perhaps not at this time, but Jesus did come for all of humanity and Jesus provides a message to Peter in Acts 10:9-16 that all deserve salvation.  Believers often act as if we get to decide with whom we get to share the gospel - and the point is that ALL are worthy and that it is not us who bring people to faith.  We allow Jesus to work in and through us and HE does the work!

We should be the hands and feet of Jesus to ALL.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are worthy of my full attention and life - You are the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings.  You give me life and life to the full - thank You Jesus!  I am not worth such love and blessing.  I daily miss the mark.  Please forgive me for my sin and help me overcome such sin and turn towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.

But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built!

1 Kings 8

But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built! v27

Solomon builds God's temple and dedicates it, raising his arms in prayer.  It is true that no building can contain God, but it can serve to glorify God and be the "hands and feet of Jesus".  We are made in Christ's image to do works on behalf of Him, to glorify Him and to bring others to Him.

We should also recognize that God DOES dwell on earth - He has in Jesus and He continues to do so in OUR hearts through the Holy Spirit.

The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us. Matthew 22:24

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God and I know You dwell in me and You have transformed my heart and life.  I am blessed and my cup overflows.  Thank You Jesus.  I am not worth such rich blessings.  I am selfish.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind, and love others as You do. Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord.

Exodus 34

When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the Lord. v29

We all want God to be us - and He is always.  This is a promise He makes many times - one such time is in Matthew 28:20. However, we should be more concerned about BEING more like Jesus. God wants us to glorify Him and bring others to Him - so we should focus on submitting to Him and allowing Him to work in and through us....just as Moses does here.

We want to be seen as the hands and feet (and face) of Jesus.

See Acts 6:15, where Stephen, although under arrest, faces the Sanhedrin and appears like an angel.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, I know You love me and You are slow to anger and abounding in love and compassion for me.  I see this in my own life...daily.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not worth such love.  I am selfish and I have other sin.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself strength and wisdom.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.
