Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward.

 Hebrews 10

Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. Hebrews 10:35

As I continue to ponder what to study next, my Bible study this morning once again leans on DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotion, which today looks at how God is "Better Than Money, Sex, and Power," which is the title of today's devotion. John Piper starts by highlighting Hebrews 10:35, which in a broader context examines the blessings of faith in Christ and in particular how we don't worry about plundering of our property because we have a "better possession" (Hebrews 10:34).  Piper expands on this by discussing the superiority of God over "all that the world has to offer," including money, sex, and power.  Piper shares: "[s]o, take the things that drive the world, and ponder how much better and more abiding God is. Take money or sex or power and think about them in relation to death. Death will take away every one of them. If that is what you live for, you won’t get much, and what you get, you lose. But God’s treasure is vastly superior, and it lasts. It goes beyond death." Piper continues by sharing that God's treasure is "better than sex. Jesus never had sexual relations, and he was the most full and complete human that ever will exist. Sex is a shadow — an image — of a greater reality, of a relationship and a pleasure that will make the most exquisite sex seem like a yawn."  On power, Piper shares: "[t]he reward of God is better than power. There is no greater human power than to be a child of the almighty God." Piper concludes by challenging those who continue to seduced by what the world has to offer to "wake up from the trance of this stupefying world and see and believe and rejoice in and love what is truly real, and infinitely valuable, and everlasting?"

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who is full of grace and compassion for me - giving me mercies that are new every morning and that never cease.  You are better than anything this world has to offer - and You freely give to those who are undeserving such as myself.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of what You give.  My sin is great and it is daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh.

Matthew 2

When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2:10-11

I maintain a pause of my study of 1 Corinthians as I continue using DesiringGod.com's Advent devotions where I pick up on Day 10.  Here, John Piper unpacks Matthew 2:10-11 where the magi worship the new born Jesus, and bring Him gifts.  Piper starts by referring us to Acts 17:25 where the scripture is clear that God does not need anything - He is not "served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything."  So these men from the east, the magi - who are not Jews - worship Jesus and offer Him gifts.  Piper's devotion seeks to help us explore why these gifts were offered and the purpose they serve. The devotion states that these are not bribes - pointing us to Deuteronomy 10:17.  Instead, Piper shares that anytime gifts are given to wealthy, self-sufficient people, these gifts echo and intensify "the giver’s desire to show how wonderful the person is. In a sense, giving gifts to Christ are like fasting — going without something to show that Christ is more valuable than what you are going without."  Piper continues by sharing that "[w]hen you give a gift to Christ like this, it’s a way of saying, “The joy that I pursue (notice Matthew 2:10! “When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy”) — the joy that I pursue is not the hope of getting rich by bartering with you or negotiating some payment. I have not come to you for your things, but for yourself. And this desire I now intensify and demonstrate by giving up things, in the hope of enjoying you more, not things. By giving to you what you do not need, and what I might enjoy, I am saying more earnestly and more authentically, ‘You are my treasure, not these things.’"  Piper concludes by sharing that it is his prayer that all people in all nations awaken to a desire for Christ Himself as their treasure above all else.

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Romans 5

Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:2

This morning, until I start a new Bible study, I continue using devotionals from John Piper.  Today, the post focuses on - building on my post yesterday - how experiencing the glory of God should be our daily pursuit. Piper encourages us to "[g]et to know the glory of God. Study the glory of God and the glory of Christ. Study the glory of the world that reveals the glory of God, and the glory of the gospel that reveals the glory of Christ. Treasure the glory of God in all things and above all things."

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an incredible God, one who loves me and who has revealed to me His glory - and I treasure Your glory.  I am grateful for Your glory.  Your glory has transformed my heart and life - thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of the grace and compassion You pour out for me.  My heart is often black with sin - including worry.

“Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Mark 10

But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” v29-31

This passage is repeated in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

In a message to seminary graduates, John Piper delivered this sermon.  As these graduates prepared to enter the work world and a life of independence (likely from their parents), Piper was imploring them to treasure Jesus vs the world and to live a "wartime lifestyle" (as does many others such as David Platt).

He warns also to avoid the fate of the rich young man who have a love of money vs Jesus.  Piper gives us two examples of those whose fate followed different paths.

Gehazi and the love of money
Mephibosheth and the love of God

Jesus, please help me live a "wartime lifestyle" and to treasure You above all else.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, what an awesome God You are as You have blessed me beyond what I deserve - yet there have been times in my life and there will continue to be times in my life when I put something or someone else, including money, above You - please forgive me Jesus!  Help me overcome such sin and turn towards You.
