The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.

Ecclesiastes 12

The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil. Ecclesiastes 1:13-14

I continue my study today of Ecclesiastes using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for this book.  Today, my focus is an unassisted review of Ecclesiastes 12:8-14, which is the third division of Ecclesiastes chapter 1 per the commentary - as the commentary shares that "Ecclesiastes cannot be rightly understood without the conclusion." In the concluding verses of Ecclesiastes, Solomon starts with "all is vanity[,]" once again pointing to the meaningless of all activity, wisdom, and knowledge apart from God.  The final verses of  Ecclesiastes, indeed, as the commentary shares, describe how Solomon, a man of great wisdom and intelligence, searches high and low for the meaning of life (including over the course of his own life) and ultimately concludes that the whole duty of man is to "[f]ear God and keep his commandments[, as...] God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil." Indeed, we exist solely to glorify God and we must also be certain to be holy as He is holy as we will all be judged according to what we have done and most importantly whether we trusted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who is full of grace and compassion - thank You Jesus for Your mercies that are new every morning and that never cease.  I am not deserving of such blessings.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You. Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please continue to heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done.

Revelation 20

I continue my D-Group's study of Revelation using Stephen Witmer's commentary and study guide - moving along with week 9, and my look at Revelation 20:1-15. The reference to "the dead, great and small" implies a comprehensiveness of humanity across all of redemptive history and how God authored the "book of life" before the foundation of the world - see also Daniel 7:10, Romans 2:6-11, and Revelation 3:5, 13:8, 17:8.  We must all be ready, as we don't the day or the hour of our own death or Christ's return, we will all be judged, and God offers salvation for those who accept Him as their Lord and Savior.

This morning, until I start a new Bible study, I continue using devotionals from John Piper.  Today, the post focuses on how all believers are to be judged upon Jesus' second coming or on judgement day - either one of us will be face one or the other without fail.  While we see a picture of amazing grace from our Lord Jesus, we should remind ourselves that we are to aspire for treasures in Heaven (Matthew 6:19) and allow fear of the Lord to serve as a preservative against sin in our lives.

Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

Ecclesiastes - Various, 1 Kings 11:41-43, and 2 Chronicles 9:29-31

Day 150 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) wraps up my study of Ecclesiastes. This morning my focus is on life's true meaning (purpose and balance in life, advice to young people, and where life finds its meaning) and a review of the end of Solomon's reign and his death.

Solomon's parting words in Ecclesiastes, which are the "conclusion" of his search for the meaning of life, are in my view the most important of the whole book.  We all sin and need a Savior, and Jesus Christ is our Savior; let us submit to and live for Him based on His forgiveness of our sin and salvation. God will call of us and all of our deeds into judgement - in light of that we must live in fear of Him.  This should serve as a preservative against temptation and sin.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who has helped me better protect myself from sin - thank You Jesus.  I know there is more work to do, but I am grateful for how You bless me.  I am not deserving.  I worry and have other sin.  Please forgive me for my sin and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as Your love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.

But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.

Luke 19

But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me. v27

Jesus is light, love, grace, etc. - ALL good in that we need these in our lives.  We need truth, we need love, we need grace, etc. as we all sin!  Yet at the same time, Jesus is judgement and this judgement, for those that reject Him, is eternal damnation.  Harsh - yes!  Nonetheless this is the judgement awaiting those who refuse to submit to Jesus.

John Piper has a great post on how he responds to the "horrifying sayings of Jesus".  Piper gives us 10 ways we can respond - and #10 is key: "We are moved, in all our imperfections, as forgiven sinners, to move into the lives of rebels and warn them of their condition, and commend the work of Christ to them, and endure their derision, if by any means we might save some".

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are a great God, full of love, grace, truth, etc. and I know Your love, grace and truth as I experience these things daily - thank You Jesus!  I am undeserving of such blessings. I know there is more I can do to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to others - please forgive me Jesus.  Help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.

Let all their wickedness come before you; deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my sins. My groans are many and my heart is faint.”

Lamentations 1

Let all their wickedness come before you; deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my sins.  My groans are many and my heart is faint. v22

As this overview points out:

"Lamentations is a moment of self-awareness: anyone reading the scroll would remember why Jerusalem fell and why the survivors were taken to Babylon. But the book also would have been a hearty (and solemn) encouragement to those who return in the days of Ezra and Nehemiah: no matter how faithless His people are, God remains faithful."

God is faithful indeed.  God loves us even when we sin, even during our punishment, and He always keeps His promises

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

We can also count on God's perfect justice - in Lamentations 1:22 Jeremiah pleads with God to bring justice to all - not just the Jews.  Clearly, the Jews are surrounded by sin and wickedness, yet they (and we!) need not concern themselves about justice - God is the Judge and all will be judged

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me, even when I sin!  Thank You Jesus!  I am not worthy of such love.  Please forgive me Jesus for my worry and help me overcome such sin and turn towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul and mind  and help me love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.

Moreover, the people are saying, “He will not see what happens to us.”

Jeremiah 12

Moreover, the people are saying, “He will not see what happens to us.” v4

Jeremiah complains to God about how people around Him sin and Jeremiah feels they get away with it and that they deserve judgement and punishment.  We should know that sin is not unnoticed and that nothing is hidden from Him.  God's justice is also perfect - and that all are subject to His judgement as He reigns.

We should not concern ourselves with others' sin (unless we need to confront sin of a brother or sister in Christ).  We should focus on our own sin and the greatness of God.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and You have transformed my heart and life to make me more like You - thank You Jesus.  I am not worth such love.  I worry.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Please help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.
