Deuteronomy Chp 4:15-20
Once again, Moses and the Israelites stand on the precipice of the promised land and Moses is taking the time to talk to the Israelites one last time as he will not entering the promised land.
15 You saw no form of any kind the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, 16 so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars—all the heavenly array—do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. 20 But as for you, the LORD took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of his inheritance, as you now are.
Here he warns the Israelites that idolatry can take many forms where as a person or as a thing..."do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven." What is interesting here is that the word "apportioned" is used and the Merriam Webster definition is:
"to divide and share out according to a plan; especially"
So, if I am to read this correctly, God created everything, including all of the heavens and everything under the heavens; and for good reason he shared his creation among all of the nations under heaven. For sure this is true - he has a plan, right? We should not worship anything else because it is a sin. If that was not enough reason not to worship anyone else but Him, Moses helps us understand that there is NO reason to worship anything else because everything else has OTHER purposes and we are to understand the proper place for everything....have some perspective man!
My Prayer: Lord, your creation is awesome. Even though I can only fully appreciate a fraction of your awesome creation, I am thankful for how you have blessed me - my family, my health, my church, my relationship with You and the eternal life you provide. Thank you for all of these blessings and forgive me when I fall down...when I sin, and when I neglect you. Help me overcome my sin and draw near to you...closer every day.
