I return to my study of Paul's prison epistles - Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon.  Today I focus on Ephesians 6:1-4 where Paul describes the Godly family, including roles for parents and for children .  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.  

• What do we learn from the text about God?: All discipline and instruction is from the Lord - He has a specific design and intent.  Broadly speaking God seeks disciples who love, serve and please Him as we exist for His glory.  We are also all given a mission in the Great Commission to "go out and make disciples of all nations...teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you."  
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Children are given two commands, one to obey their parents, and two to honor their parents.  The text for the second command includes a reference to the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17), specifically the fifth commandment (Exodus 20:12) where there is not just a command but a promise if the command is followed: "that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you."  Believers must keep in mind that this promise is a general principle vs an absolute guarantee (such as salvation).  For more on this, see this interview with John Piper from DesiringGod.com.  Fathers are commanded to not provoke their children to anger, but to raise them up according to God's discipline and instruction.  We are to teach and model Christ and spiritual disciplines.  We are also to discipline children - see also this resource for more details on Biblical discipline.   
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid provoking children to anger (keeping in mind they are often likely to see Godly discipline as wrong and be angry).  Children can claim the promise of a stable and blessed live based on honoring of their mother and father.  Follow the example of Christ who modeled Godly obedience as both the Son and the Father with His believers as children of God. Love God and love others as the most important commandments and be obedient to God's commands for children and parents.

I pause this morning my study of Numbers to prepare for leading Sunday school as we discuss today's sermon on the fifth commandment - Exodus 20:12.  Here are my observations using the Sword Bible Study Method.

• What do we learn from the text about God?: We are commanded by God to honor our mother and father - with honor being defined generally as "respect that is given to someone who is admired."  Honor includes obedience, and how we treat someone not only when we are with them but also when we are not - upholding one's reputation.  We can only rightly do this from a biblical standpoint if we love God first and through our love of Him and in response to His love for us we love others because this pleases Him and we seek to please, honor and glorify Him.  Therefore, our love of others, including love for our mother and father, reflects our relationship with Jesus. God gives us a promise also - although we should understand that long life is not promised here but instead a general blessing of peace and satisfaction. 
• What do we learn from the text about people?: Often, people in teenage and young adult years seek independence from the path laid out by their parents and this sometimes manifests itself in rebellion.  This rebellion is often not just from the parent-child relationship, from the relationship with God.  Parents often feel that rebellion is a reflection upon them and to a certain extent it is, but largely it is not because there are plenty of Godly parents whose children are rebellious.  God is in control and we cannot engineer our children.  Prayer and leaning into God is the only proper response to rebellion.    
• Is there anything from the text God wants us to obey (SPEC: Sins to avoid, Promises to claim, Examples to follow, Commands to obey?): Avoid seeing parents as a burden.  Claim the promise of a blessed life upon honoring your father and mother.  Follow the example of Jesus who honored the will of His Father.  Love God first and in response, love, obey, and honor your mother and father.

I continue my study of Mark, leaning on the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for Mark.  Today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Mark 10:13-16.  Excerpts from the commentary's introduction to this text and for the first (of two) division (vv13-14):

• The title for the this chapter of the commentary covering the entirety of the text (vv13-16) is "Jesus Loves the Little Children (Why I Believe Children Who Die Go to Heaven)."
• The main idea from the commentary for the entirety of the text is "Jesus loves all children, and He lovingly calls all people to become like dependent children if they are to enter His kingdom." 
• The title for the first division per the commentary is: "We Should Bring Children to Jesus."  
• "Throughout history the intrinsic value of children has often been ignored. Biblical examples of dishonoring children as image bearers include Herod’s killing of babies during Jesus’ day, mirroring the Pharaoh in Exodus. In general children were not held in high esteem by Romans. By Jesus’ time Romans had a trash heap beside many homes where people could leave unwanted children. If other people wanted the children, they would pick them up. Sometimes these kids were raised to be prostitutes, gladiators, or slaves. Unfortunately, the world is not much safer for today’s children."  
• "The only way to have a balanced view of children is to have a biblical view, to see them as God sees them: they are His gifts to parents (Psalms 127:3-5); they provide an illustration as to how we enter the kingdom of God (Mark 9:14-15)."  
• "Chapter 10 divides into five major sections: Jesus teaches on marriage in verses 1-12 and on children in verses 13-16. Then He addresses the perils of possessions (vv17-31) and the glory of sacrificial service (vv32-45). Finally, Jesus responds to the faith of a blind man (vv46-52). The concern and love our Savior has for children is crystal clear."   
• "One would have a difficult time finding in ancient literature concern for children comparable to that shown by Jesus (Edwards, Mark, 306)." 
• We are encouraged to be like those who brought the children to Jesus in v13.  Stand up and focus on children. 
• V14 "is the only time Jesus is said to be “indignant.” His righteous anger was aroused, and He publicly rebuked them. James Edwards says, “The object of a person’s indignation reveals a great deal about the person. Jesus’ displeasure here reveals his compassion and defense of the helpless, vulnerable, and powerless” (Mark, 306). Jesus is affirming that children are worth His time, and they should be worth our time!" 
• "There are several ways we can consistently and actively lead children to Christ. We can evangelize them with a gospel-saturated home. We can disciple them with a Bible-saturated home. We can pray with them in a prayer-saturated home. We can encourage them, bless them, and challenge them." 

I indeed feel blessed by children, echoing the words of Psalm 127:3-5.  I also understand the responsibilities God charges myself and Lisa with to be parents.  Father God please help us be the parents You design us to be!

Day 100 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) focuses on the birth of Solomon, the rape of Tamar (daughter of David) by Amnon (son of David), and Absalom's (son of David) revenge killing of Amnon.

Much like David longs for Absalom in spite of his sin, God longs for us despite our sin.

There are very important distinctions we must recognize regarding how God BOTH loves and hates us as sinners.  John Piper provides great clarity on these distinctions. Piper's starting point is that God hates sinners (referencing Psalm 5:4-5 and 11:5).  Piper writes, "[s]o, it is just not true to give the impression that God doesn’t hate sinners by saying he loves the sinner and hates the sin. He does hate sinners. His wrath is real. It is not something he pours out on people he approves of".  He then goes on to write how God ALSO loves sinners, referencing John 3:16.  Piper writes: ... "[this] matters [because] [i]f we don’t understand that God finds us hateful and loathsome in our ugly sin, we won’t be as stunned by what his love is for us".

God's love for us should in Piper's words "stun" us - and it does!

Day 7 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) focuses on the back half of the story when angels who visit Abraham and Sarah and deliver once again the message of their coming child and as well the story of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (including Lot's escape).

As the angels visiting Abraham and Sarah leave, the Lord delivers this very convicting message about the role of fathers - Genesis 18:19. My day yesterday included the sin of rage of a father over his son - and I have asked both God and my son for forgiveness and both are full of grace.  My own dysfunction is echoed further in the story of Sodom and Gomorrah's destruction when in Genesis 19 a conflict ensues at Lot's house about men storming his door to have sex with the angels visiting him.  Lot seeks to spare the angels but strangely enough offers his own daughters as an alternative.  God...in all of His grace spares Lot and his daughters - but not Lot's wife who disobeys God strict command to not turn back - she is turned into a pillar of salt.  Lot and his daughters are spared but they don't focus on God's grace and instead turn to their own powers in an effort to extend their line.

I am grateful indeed how God uses it all and seek to turn to Him - I want to become more like Him every day.

I am challenged to treasure my wife Lisa as Paul encourages us to in this letter to the church in Ephesus. I am too often selfish or lazy.

Building on my post yesterday, this morning Paul reminds us of our identity in Christ, including:
- our hope 
- our inheritance as children of God
- the power in and for our lives and for the the lives of others through us

One of the implications I see is that God desires us to seek big things in our lives (and in our families) so that others can see the power of God in and through us so that others are drawn to Him.  We have an identity, we are Christ's ambassadors, and as His ambassadors we are to represent Him and His kingdom appropriately.  Implications for fathers are great here.  Check out this great podcast on this topic of "Casting a Vision for Your Family".

John Piper offers great teaching and encouragement on these verses in Luke 18 (v15-17).  I am reminded of my role as spiritual head of the household and that I should be taking time to instruct my sons on scripture.  I need to do more!

In Genesis 2 God says "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him. (v18)”.  God provided to me my wife Lisa and God has helped me see no flaw in her just as she hopefully sees no flaw in me.  I love You Lisa.

We are called to bear with each other (see post from a couple of days ago) and Lisa has done this in spades for me.  This morning I am grateful for Lisa as I should be every day.

As of April 3rd, we've been married 20 years.  Thank you God for finding me a perfect helper.

Jacob and Rebekah advised both of their sons not to marry Canaanite women - they recognize that we should not be "yoked" with unbelievers.

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. 2 Corinthians 6:14

Several commentaries, including this one, I believe rightly point this out as well as the importance of honoring our mother and father.

God wants nothing to come between us and Him, including our own family.  We must make God the highest priority in our lives, and in so doing prevent even our family from becoming an idol.  Abraham and Sarah waited many years to have a child of their own and without a doubt it brought much joy to them.  Yet we can often place family above our relationship with Jesus.  This can happen as we often desire child to glorify ourselves vs God.

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God[.] Psalm 143:10

 

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are a great God, worthy of my full attention and worthy of being the highest priority in my life.  You created me, You have blessed me, and You are full of compassion and mercy for me - even though I am far from deserving.  I am selfish.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

When raising kids, it seems as if every day you are dealing with one thing or another regarding behavior that is inappropriate, wrong, or sinful.  In this category alone, I feel tested and troubled and I worry whether my kids are going the right direction - many times this results in a reaction that is not Christ-like.  Yet God calls us love others as He loves us (John 13:34-35).  When God calls us to love in this way, this includes showing love in all senses of the word and what comes to mind are the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23):

• love
• joy
• peace
• forbearance
• kindness
• goodness
• faithfulness
• gentleness
• self-control

This morning, I know I failed on at LEAST two of these counts in dealing with my kids - Father forgive me!  I have the same request that David has:

One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. v4

As David does, I desire to be with God all the days of my life, in the Word and with the Spirit.  

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13

But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 4:29

My Prayer:  Lord Jesus, You are an amazing God, full of love for me - this I know.  I am blessed beyond what I deserve with Your love as it is abundant.  Thank You Jesus for such love. Yet again, I am undeserving.  Please forgive me for my lack of love and grace for others.  Help me overcome and turn from such sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, mind and strength.  Help me love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give me strength.  Give Lisa strength. Please heal and cure Lisa of her cancer and the side effects from chemo and radiation.  Help me lead and serve Lisa, Zach and Dustin, and serve You.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

Paul wants us to care for others, in particular widows and elders.  In this verse he is talking specifically for relatives who are older - my mother in my case and Lisa in the case of Zach.  

This is one of the ten commandments:

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God, full of love, compassion, gentleness - ALL of the fruits of the Spirit.  You are patient with me and You honor me I know.  Yet I am weak and disobedient and I have not always honored my own mom or dad or other family members.  Thank You Jesus for Your gentleness in dealing with me but please forgive me!  Help me overcome my sin and turn towards You instead.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength.  Help me love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith. Help me honor my family by serving them.  Give me strength.  Give Lisa strength.  Please heal and cure her of this cancer.  Help me lead and serve Lisa, Zach and Dustin.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.
