“For the waves of death encompassed me, the torrents of destruction assailed me[....]This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.

2 Samuel 22

This morning, until I start a new Bible study, I continue using devotionals from John Piper.  Today, the post focuses on Job and how we can view God's providence and goodness during periods of trial.  Piper draws from the book of Job and pulls out five applications for us.

  1. Satan is not ultimate; God is.
  2. Satan is not the decisive cause of death and calamity; God is.
  3. Destructive calamities in this world mingle judgment and mercy.
  4. The heart that Christ gives to his people feels compassion for those who suffer, no matter what their faith is.
  5. Finally, Christ calls us to show mercy to those who suffer, even if they do not deserve it.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an amazing God who loves me and who is full of mercy and compassion for me as You purify and sanctify me, and even during periods when I am punished - Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of such mercy and compassion.  My sin continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.
