I resume my study of the last four books of the OT (complete: Zephaniah, Haggai; to complete: Zechariah, Malachi) - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Zechariah 7:8-10, which the commentary outlines as the third of five divisions for the text 7:1-8:23 (7:1-3/8:18-23, 7:4-7, 7:8-10, 7:11-14, 8:1-17). The commentary provides the following title for this division: Transformed from Pursuing Religion to Pursuing Righteousness.  Earlier in Zechariah 7, God challenges His people for performing empty rituals rather than having a heart for Him.  This love of Him should direct us to please Him and it pleases Him to be a light to others so that others are drawn to Him.  We do this by loving and serving others.  Of course this includes avoiding "evil against another in our heart."  This is particularly piercing because "in our heart" means that most all of us are guilty of this sin - see also Matthew 5:28 where we Jesus shares that we are not to "look" at others lustfully.  We must focus on our heart condition and examine our lives from the inside out - vs a focus on external behaviors and empty rituals that mean nothing to God - see also Matthew 23:25-26

The inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, 'Let us go at once to entreat the favor of the LORD and to seek the LORD of hosts; I myself am going.' Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of the LORD. Thus says the LORD of hosts: In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe of a Jew, saying, 'Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.'"

I continue my study of the last four books of the OT (complete: Zephaniah, Haggai; to complete: Zechariah, Malachi) - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For today, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Zechariah 7:1-3 and 8:18-23, which the commentary outlines as the first of five divisions for the text 7:1-8:23 (7:1-3/8:18-23, 7:4-7, 7:8-10, 7:11-14, 8:1-17).  Here the commentary emphasizes how, building on my post yesterday, a heart transformation is required to more fully experience God.  The commentary describes this first division as "framing" the entirety of the text and how God transforms fasting - which God's people did to commemorate events and periods in Jerusalem's history when the temple was destroyed - into feasting, which is described in the latter verses of chapter 8.  The commentary further describes how God did not require such fasting - only during Yom Kippur (see Leviticus 23:16-32) was fasting commanded. It shares that "[God] can take the most difficult circumstances, the most broken times of your life, and turn them into times of feasting and fruitfulness through His power....experiencing God’s living presence requires deep transformation in our lives."  We must fully surrender our lives to God and seek Him daily through scripture reading, study, prayer, corporate worship, service, and other spiritual disciplines. We must seek God with a "hunger and thirst for righteousness" (Matthew 5:6) to transform our hearts (Romans 12:2) into more of His image and so that we can best be able to understand His will for our lives.

I continue my study of Haggai - using the Christ-Centered Exposition Commentary volume for this book.  For this morning, my focus is a commentary-assisted review of Haggai 2:1-5, which the commentary outlines as the first division for Haggai 2:1-9.  The commentary describes how God makes a promise to His people in these verses and the commentary shares how God's words with this promise provide four clear steps that result in the fulfillment of God's promise:

  1. God wants you to see your sin - to define the problem (see also posts on Haggai chapter1).  "[God] was bringing conviction of sin to them. Conviction always occurs through clarity. Their sin is laid bare for them to clearly see, and they can no longer deny it." Of course this leads them back to God in repentance. 
  2. Once they repent, God provides hope.  God wants His grace to free His people from the cycle of sin and shame and how this leads to pain and discouragement.  God does not want this - that is why He forgives us. See also Romans 5:8.
  3. Repentance leads us into obedience to God - and God in the text is calling His people to work - so we should! The commentary shares "transformed hearts leads to transformed hands."
  4. Once we follow steps #1-3, we will experience God's presence.  "Verse 5 points out that because God’s presence is among them, they will not have to be afraid. They can rest in God’s presence. He is a strong tower that brings grace, yes. He brings hope, yes. Finally, though, He brings rest....As we see throughout the whole of Scripture, there are many reasons why one will be blessed by following God, but none is more significant than the promise of God’s presence."  See also Psalm 84:10.

Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. Hebrews 8:6

I maintain a pause of my study of 1 Corinthians as I continue using DesiringGod.com's Advent devotions where I pick up on Day 14.  Here, John Piper unpacks what occurs in the hearts and lives of believers through the better covenant that is described in Hebrews 8:6 and related text.  Piper first starts by explaining that Christ is a mediator of a new and better covenant because the blood of Christ (His crucifixion and resurrection - see also Luke 20:20, Hebrews 13:20) "finally and decisively purchased and secured the fulfillment of God’s promises for us." Piper continues by sharing that this means that "God, according to the new covenant promises, brings about our inner transformation by the Spirit of Christ.  And it means that God works this transformation in us through faith — faith in all that God is for us in Christ.  The new covenant is purchased by the blood of Christ, effected by the Spirit of Christ, and appropriated by faith in Christ." Piper then refers us to Hebrews 13:20-21 where the text, in Piper's words describe "[t]he best place to see Christ working as the Mediator of the new covenant."  Expanding on Hebrews 13:20-21, Piper then concludes the devotion by sharing that "[t]he words “working in us that which is pleasing in his sight” describe what happens when God writes the law on our hearts in accord with the new covenant. And the words “through Jesus Christ” describe Jesus as the Mediator of this glorious work of sovereign grace. So, the meaning of Christmas is not only that God replaces shadows with Reality, but also that he takes the Reality and makes it real to his people. He writes it on our hearts. He does not lay his Christmas gift of salvation and transformation under the tree, so to speak, for you to pick up in your own strength. He picks it up and puts it in your heart and in your mind and gives you the seal of assurance that you are a child of God."  For believers, Christ working in our hearts and lives is dramatic as we and others see the fruit of our faith through heart and life transformation as God molds us into His image.  It is not of course always a fun process but nonetheless God gives us joy and a peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word[.] Ephesians 5:25-26

For my daily study, I continue to lean on DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotional, which today looks at how God's unconditional love is not the "sweetest experience of [God's] love" according to John Piper.  First, the elephant in the room for many regarding the highlighted text is that Piper is not focusing on marriage and how husbands are commanded to love their wives.  Instead, Piper first describes how God does have unconditional love for us and this is the basis for our election, justification and salvation as we are not deserving of such love and blessing but God provides for these things unconditionally.  Piper then proceeds to describe how the sanctification process is where God loves us conditionally based on the extent to which that sanctification process matures and we progressively become more like Him, reflect His glory and please Him.  Piper shares: the "sweetest experience [of God's love] is conditional on our transformation into the kind of people whose emotions and choices and actions please God....When [God] unconditionally chooses us, and sends Christ to die for us, and regenerates us, he puts in motion an unstoppable process of transformation that makes us glorious. He gives us a splendor to match his favorite kind: his own." Piper moves from Ephesians 5:25-26 to verse 27 where Paul writes how Christ "present[s] the church to himself in splendor."  Piper concludes the devotion by writing: "[i]t is unspeakably wonderful that God would unconditionally set his favor on us while we are still unbelieving sinners. The ultimate reason this is wonderful is that this unconditional love brings us into the everlasting enjoyment of his glorious presence. But the apex of that enjoyment is that we not only see his glory, but also reflect it." In closing we are referred to 2 Thessalonians 1:12.  We should all seek to please God by progressively reflecting His glory.

And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death[.] Colossians 1:21-22a

I continue to lean on DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotion, which today looks at how believers, apart from God's grace, are hostile to God - in their minds. In this devotion, John Piper starts with the good news - which is for believers.  Believers know that PRIOR to our salvation, we WERE hostile to God - this is stated not just in Colossians 1 but elsewhere in scripture, including Romans 5:8, 10. Through Christ's death and resurrection on the cross, those who confess Him as Lord and Savior have salvation, hope, power, etc. Yet for those who do not confess sin, repent and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, eternal damnation awaits.  Piper looks at the pre-election condition of being "alienated and hostile [to God] in mind" and shares that for those who are not elected by Christ, "hostility is really there toward the true God, but people do not allow themselves to think about the true God. They imagine God to be the way they would like him to be, which seldom includes any possibility that they might be in really serious trouble with him. But concerning the God who really exists — a God who is sovereign over all things, including sickness and calamity — we were all hostile to him, Paul says. Deep down, we hated his absolute power and authority.  That any of us is saved is owing to the wonderful truth that the death of Christ obtained the grace by which God conquered our hearts and caused us to love the One we once hated."  Believers should understand this truth and be overwhelmed in awe and love for God who turned towards us, and loved us first (1 John 4:19).  At the same time, we should continue to show mercy to those who have not turned towards God and seek to snatch them from the fire (Jude 1:22-23).

This morning, my focus is DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotion, and John Piper discusses the eternal covenant brought about by Christ's death and resurrection, and how this equips believers "with everything good that we may do his will," and how "[Christ] works in us that which is pleasing in his sight."  Piper shares, using Jeremiah 31:33 how God writes His "law on our hearts" and how this means that "[t]he will of God is not just written on stone or paper as a means of grace. It is worked in us. And the effect is: We feel and think and act in ways more pleasing to God."  This is the sanctification process at work - read, study, etc. God's Word, etc. and watch God get to work on Your heart and life.

This morning, until I start a new Bible study, I continue using devotionals from John Piper.  Today, the post focuses on how anyone - believer and non-believer alike - can more aggressively, and more actively pursue change in our lives - of course this is through belief in Jesus and a through a hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6) that drives us into His arms through daily study and prayer in His Word where we are hearts and minds are transformed (Romans 12:2).  Piper provides the following scriptures for us lean on as we explore this topic:

This morning, I continued my study of Leviticus using the Christ-Centered Exposition series commentary for this book - wrapping up chapter nineteen - Holiness and Leadership - covering Leviticus 21-22, looking specifically at the fifth and final theme for the chapter - God Calls Us to Know Him Through His New Covenant in Christ.  Here, the commentary summarizes the key takeaways from Leviticus 21-22.  It starts by stating that "God's commands about [the] worship practices and priests [as described in these books] are helpful since they symbolize the way God relates to His people.  On the other hand, the old covenant sacrificial system and priesthood have been superseded by the new covenant in Jesus....However, the book of Leviticus is valuable because it is doubtful we will understand much of what the New Testament says about Jesus unless we know and understand Leviticus." We are encouraged to review how Jesus fulfills the laws in Leviticus 21-22.

Romans 1:1-7

...Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ...  Romans 1:4-6

Today, I continued my study of Romans.  Using my commentary - Exalting Jesus in Romans (eBook) - I started with a review of Romans 1:1-7.  Without reference to my commentary, and with the assistance of highlighting, my eyes focus on how in v5 Paul writes that we (meaning of course his readers in Rome) have received grace and apostleship "to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations." The grace and apostleship were a means to an end - that we act out the obedience required for faith as this was God's design and of course the ultimate goal is God's glory...as this is why we exist

According to the commentary for us to grasp the fullness of the text, we are also to understand:

  • the "gospel is God's good news (1:1)"; the Greek word used in the text refers to a common term used in "emperor worship; however, Paul wants to make clear that this is "God's good news for the world concerning his Son, Jesus."
  • the gospel was "promised in the Old Testament (1:2)"; we are to understand that there is continuity between the OT and NT and the OT serves as the foundation for the NT; there are not two Gods who authored the Bible but one; Christ of course fulfilled scriptural prophecy in the OT; the Word is Holy and divine. 
  • the gospel is "centered on Jesus (1:3-4)"; of course "the gospel is not preached if Christ is not preached." Jesus is described in the flesh, and as dead and resurrected; we also see the Holy Spirit; 
  • the gospel is "designed to bring all peoples to the obedience of faith for the sake of Christ's name (1:5)"; "Paul's longing is that the nations may have an obedience that flows from faith.  That is what "the obedience of faith means--a faith that leads to obedience.  Faith is the root; obedience the fruit...[t]he ultimate goal of gospel ministry is then stated: for the sake of his name."
  • the gospel is "transforming everyone who believes (1:6-7); "Paul tells the Romans where they fit in.  They are among the Jews and Gentiles who are part of this redemptive plan.  The gospel radically transforms whose who believe."  We are described as "loved by God" and "[t]this is a remarkable statement of transformation in view of the opening three chapters of Romans that describe our sinful nature."

For the original readers of these opening seven verses, and for any reader that has come after, these are indeed exciting verses as all believers are part of God's redemptive plan and that as children of God we are all on a sanctifying journey to be transformed into God's image until that one day when we meet Him face to face.

This morning, I continued with John Piper's Reading the Bible Supernaturally: Seeing and Savoring the Glory of God in Scripture, continuing with Part 3 The Natural Act of Reading the Bible Supernaturally, chapter seventeen - The Indispensable Place of Prayer in Reading the Bible Supernaturally: To See, Savor, and Love with a United Heart. Here, Piper builds on the previous chapter on prayer and its critical role in reading the BibleHe starts by reinforcing a few key points, including how "prayer does not take the place of careful interpretation (aka natural reading).  Prayer serves careful interpretation. He also points out that "God sometimes withholds the fullness of his illumination for wise and holy reasons[.]"  Piper gives us a few examples of strategies for getting insight from the Bible, including prayer to:

  • "guide you to notice parts of the text that are especially illuminating
  • to lead you to other passages in the Bible that would shed light on the one you are reading
  • to lead you to other books or sermons or lectures that would be useful in shedding light on some problem you have run into
  • for experiences, or a reminder of experiences you've had, that would make what you are reading more real
  • for friends who could study the Bible with you and help you see things you haven't seen
  • against any sinful habits or inclinations that might blind you to a part of Scripture you find uncomfortable
  • that as you write the text down in your journal, you would notice things you missed in simple reading"

 A core message from this chapter is how we should unite our heart with God - using the acronym from the previous chapter: IOUS - Intent, Open, Unite, Satisfy. Piper writes that all Christians face the battle of a divided heart: "[u]ntil we die, or until Jesus comes again, the battle rages.  We Christians must daily reassert our allegiance to Jesus as supreme." We must also find satisfaction in reading the Bible and pray for this.  Piper uses Psalm 63 as the "model for us" to move from "seeking to seeing to savoring." Piper then adds a new letter "L" for lead to the IOUS acronym for us to pray that we be led by the Holy Spirit to a "beautiful transformation from selfish behavior to radical, risk-taking, loving behavior. Psalm 23:3, 119:35, 25:5, 5:8 and Matthew 6:13 are all provided as examples of how we are to pray for this transformation.

This morning, I continued with John Piper's Reading the Bible Supernaturally: Seeing and Savoring the Glory of God in Scripture, covering chapter nine - Reading to Be Transformed, Part 2. Here, Piper seeks to continue unpacking the fifth of six implications that flow from the ultimate goal of reading the Bible (as listed here); this implication is "that we should aim to be transformed by this seeing and savoring into the likeness of his beauty." Piper reminds of the last chapter where "savoring [of God's glory] pushes out the 'deceitful desires' that tricked us into thinking anything is more satisfying than God.  And that all-important seeing happens as we read the word of God." In this chapter, Piper uses 2 Corinthians 8:1-2 to provide a "snapshot of Christian transformation" that occurs when we move from seeing and savoring God's glory to be transformed by it. In these verses, including how they extend through to verse 7-8, is Paul's description of how the Macedonian churches' "abundance of joy" that resulted from love and pursuit of joy in the glory of God pushed them beyond human capacity to be generous.  Piper writes that this "pursuit of joy in the glory of God, far from making us self-absorbed, in fact, puts us on the quest of making others eternally glad in God.  Their joy in God is the expansion and completion of ours."

Today, I continued with John Piper's Reading the Bible Supernaturally: Seeing and Savoring the Glory of God in Scripture, covering chapter eight - Reading to Be Transformed, Part 2. Here, Piper seeks to continue unpacking the fifth of six implications that flow from the ultimate goal of reading the Bible (as listed here); this implication is "that we should aim to be transformed by this seeing and savoring into the likeness of his beauty." Piper starts by clarifying one of his most favorite "slogans" - that "God is most glorified in us, when we are most satisfied in him."  The clarification focuses on the word when - implying that there are "other facts" or conditions that must be present - he stresses "how indispensable it is that we pursue satisfaction in God." Piper then lands on our focus for this chapter (in two parts): "an explanation and justification of how the Scriptures function to bring us from seeing the glory of God to savoring the glory of God to being transformed-inside and outside-into the likeness of Christ."  Piper points to Matthew 12:33-35 and 23:25-26 to show how "outwards sanctity is only as good as the fruit of inward savoring" and how "the Bible aims to create authentic people who are so satisfied in God that their outward behavior shows that God is their greatest treasure." We are to "do good deeds so that others would glorify God when they see them." 

Piper uses both Matthew 5:11-16 and 1 Peter 3:13-17 to answer this question. In the passage from Matthew, "[o]n the basis of this indestructible joy in God, Jesus commands them to do what is utterly against all ordinary human experience....your joy comes not from the things [other people's] joy comes from, but from God."  In the passage from 1 Peter, we are encouraged to "be prepared" to share where our "hope" comes from, implying that "we are not hoping in the same things they are....So the secret to the kind of good deeds that get glory for God is a deep underlying satisfaction in God's promise of blessing that frees us to take risks in the cause of love that the world finds inexplicable.  In other words savoring God over all leads to radical transformation."  2 Corinthians 3:18-4:6 is also used by Piper to make this point. 

Finally, Piper wants to understand that the renewing of our mind as discussed in Romans 12:2 needs to be connected to Ephesians 4:22-23 so that we understand that this renewal of the mind is not just intellectual but a "renewal of the spirit of the mind."

This morning, I continued John Piper's book Providence (purchased from Amazon Kindle Store) and started Part 2 "The Ultimate Goal of Providence", moving to Section 3 "The Ultimate Goal of Providence in the Design and Enactment of the New Covenant" - moving to chapter fourteen "The Glory of Christ in the Glorification of His People".

The one big idea in this chapter by Piper is to address the process of glorification, which Piper writes is the same as sanctification.  He indicates that "[o]ur progressive glorification is the experience of growing in ways of thinking and feeling and behaving that reflect the glory of God in Christ"...and that "progressive glorification [both] fulfills [and is released by] the new covenant."  He also writes that "God is the decisive cause in the glorification of God." Piper recaps the key point by stating "things don't just happen for God's glory; they happen for God's glory because the pervasive providence of God sees to it that they happen that way.  This is the goal of providence. God is supremely committed to the display of his glory for the admiration and enjoyment of all who have it was their supreme treasure."

Pausing for a moment on the details of John Piper's book Providence, I reflect on how challenging the reading itself has become and how I often get lost in the details and fail to walk away with "the forest for the trees" or the "big or central" idea sought by Piper for his audience.  Hence my posts will now increase my focus and understanding on the "big or central" idea of each chapter as I will lessen my concern for some of the finer details for the sake of seeing the forest for the trees.

This morning I lean on another of Piper's works - a blog post - to better understand the sanctification or glorification progress.  Piper describes how and why God sanctifies us slowly.  According to Piper, we are sanctified slowly because we are "depleted" daily and in need of "renewal".  Both Matthew 6:34 and Lamentations 3:22-23 are provided to encourage us to avoid worrying about tomorrow because even though we have new troubles every day, God provides new mercies - this is the "leaking process" described in Piper's post on slow sanctification.

This morning, I continued John Piper's book Providence (purchased from Amazon Kindle Store) and started Part 2 "The Ultimate Goal of Providence", moving to Section 3 "The Ultimate Goal of Providence in the Design and Enactment of the New Covenant" - moving to chapter eleven "The Designs of the New Covenant". Here Piper looks at the "inner designs" of the New Covenant as found in the Old Testament.

Piper starts with Jeremiah 31:31-34 "to show that Christ is a mediator of a 'better covenant' and "contrasts it with 'letters of stone' given to Moses' (2 Corinthians 3:7)."  Piper then points to "three massive promised realities" of the New Covenant: 

  1. God forgives sins of those in this covenant relationship
  2. God writes the law in the hearts
  3. "God will be there God in such a way that 'they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest' (Jeremiah 31:34)."

Piper continues to push forward by writing how the New Covenant is "the way providence moves towards its ultimate goal" which is that "God be known and enjoyed and praised for who he really is[.]" He explains this by stating God's "explicit strategy in the new covenant" includes the following and how "[e]ach of these...points to joy in God":

  1. "to take out the heart of stone (Ezekiel 36:26)"
  2. "to put his Spirit in his people (Ezekiel 36:27a)"
  3. "to cause them to obey his word (Ezekiel 36:27b)"

Piper cites Jeremiah 32:39-41 to show how this heart transformation is permanent. We are also encouraged to see fear as a "failure to see God in Christ as supremely enthralling (Romans 11:20)."  Piper wraps up the chapter to demonstrate how the design of the New Covenant is seen as far back as Deuteronomy 29-30 when Moses shares how God "will circumcise your heart".   Piper writes that "[t]his new covenant act of creating love in the hearts of his people is God's way of completing great purpose of creation: God's delight in him."

I continue with my study of - Ten Men of the Bible: How God Used Imperfect People to Change the World - eBook by Max Lucado (for purchase). This morning, I continue with the story of "Paul: Never Too Far Gone for a Turnaround*".

Max Lucado's commentary* for day two of my study focuses on Paul's remarkable transformation from persecutor to persecuted. We see how God used Paul's zeal and passion, not for evil, but for good. This should be part of all of our stories - how God both transforms hearts and lives - instantly.  Yet at the same time God uses who we are and how we've been shaped to accomplish His glory. Lucado also wants us to understand that believers that face persecution for their faith see purpose in such suffering:

LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - this afternoon the focus is Paul's second letter to the church in Corinth; given how much ground is covered in my commentary* (chapters 1-9), I broke the reading into two days, yesterday starting with chapters 1-3 and today with chapters 4-9.

Yesterday, I started a post with comments on how we as believers may feel impatient with the process of sanctification and how a hunger and thirst for righteousness serves to carry us through this impatience as we learn to love the process itself, regardless of how long or slow it may be.  Today I read an awesome post by John Piper on why God sanctifies us slowly.  Piper essentially says that God does this because "f[i] God didn’t do it this way, [we]’d get uppity about it. [we]’d think [we] had it made. [We]’d think [o]ur strength was coming from [ourselves]".

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who gives me bread daily - physically, emotionally, spiritually, etc. - all of it!  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving for how You provide for me.  I put earthly concerns, selfish concerns ahead of You.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me. Day 336 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - this afternoon the focus is Paul's second letter to the church in Corinth; given how much ground is covered in my commentary* (chapters 1-9), I broke the reading into two days starting with chapters 1-3.  For the entire letter (13 chapters), my commentary* focuses on Paul's sense of "fulfillment in his ministry" and in the church in Corinth personally.

In the early part of this letter, we see an unfolding focus on Paul's defense of his ministry. Towards the end of chapter 3 we see Paul focusing on the source of his boldness and he introduces the process of sanctification.  Many of us, myself included, often find ourselves impatient as God transforms our hearts and lives into more of His likeness.   Thus faith (trust in Christ) and sanctification go hand in hand as it may feel as if we are watching paint dry.  For myself, I believe that "hunger and thirst for righteousness" plays a key role here also because when we wait for God to transform us and He does so slowly, we should at least enjoy the process - that is spending time with God.

Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.

Day 320 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - this morning focusing on the crucifixion and burial of Jesus. My commentary* pays particular attention to how both Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus (who earlier had gone to Jesus in the night to speak with Him - see John 3) were members of the "very council which had called for Jesus' execution" but nonetheless sought to care for and prepare Jesus' body and then bury Jesus.  Joseph of Arimathea also gives his own tomb to bury Jesus. It is believed* that both men became believers and that "[i]t is fitting, therefore, that two men whose lives have been so touched by Jesus should now express their gratitude in this final tribute."

I am struck this morning how two members of the council have done an about face with regard to their disbelief and antipathy towards Jesus.  We don't know the extent to which these men truly regarded Jesus with malice but at the very least they were willing to go on record supporting Jesus, likely in the face of losing their status and position.  Jesus does this - the heart and life transformation witnessed here is nothing short of a miracle.  As I sit back and reflect on what we are facing in our own country with political sides expressing such malice and anger towards each other - we see more than ever how we all need Jesus.  No government or person can solve what ills us...only Jesus can. 

I am reminded of Paul's own transformation - see Acts 22.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who has transformed my heart and my life and I am deeply grateful. You went to the cross for me.  I am not deserving of such an act - my sin continues.  Please forgive me for my worry and other sins.  Help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You. Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

Day 138 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues with a study of the Proverbs - primarily of Solomon, but including the Proverbs of other authors as well. This morning my focus includes proverbs that discuss control of self (self-control, rashness, temper and patience, drunkenness and gluttony, adultery, and prostitution).

Like my post yesterday where there were multiple important topics worthy of greater consideration, today as well I zero in on one of the many topics covered by today's proverbs.  From a biblical perspective, self-control is a bit of an oxymoron given we are (generally speaking) either slave to sin or a slave to God and that none of us truly experience free will. Against this backdrop, I am proof of the harm done due to rashness (Proverbs 29:11), and the joy of God-control.  I say God-control because I don't want self-control - I am a sinful person and left to my own devices and self-control of course I will sin.  Who would want this?  Instead I seek to draw closer and closer to the one true God who can transform my heart and life into more of His image.
