Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 1 John 2:15
This morning, I continue my study of 1,2,3 John using the Christ-Centered Exposition commentary series volume for these books. My study today focuses on an unassisted review of 1 John 2:12-17. Once again, as John has been in this chapter (see 2:1), he demonstrates the love of a parent or teacher of young children seeking to guide other believers in their faith towards maturity and a fullness of understanding of who Jesus is and how to live as Jesus seeks for us to live. In this text, John ensures we know who Jesus is and what He is able to do for believers:
- forgive sins (v12)
- He is the Alpha and the Omega - both creator and eternal (vv13-14)
- power and victory over sin and death (v13-14)
- He is known (v13)
Earlier in this chapter, John speaks of love - love for God and for others. Now, starting in v15, John talks about love of the world and of created things and how this obscures love of God. John writes in vv16-17 how "all that is in the world...is passing away," but God "[and] whoever does the will of God abides forever."
Comment and discuss this post.
My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the Alpha and Omega - eternal - You forgive sins, give believers power and victory over sin and death, and You are always with me, never leaving or forsaking me and giving me life now to the full and for eternity with You. Thank You Jesus! Incredible blessings that are completely undeserved. My sin is great and it continues...daily. Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You. Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me. Help me grow in my faith. Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength. Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo. Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior. Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin. Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.
