Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

Hebrews 2:14-15

Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. Hebrews 2:14-15

I agree with this post on DesiringGod.com that states that Holy Week is the most important week in all of history. While Holy Week and Easter have passed, I do want to read to completion John Piper's 50-day devotional Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came to Die. Today I read reason #39: To Free Us from Bondage to the Fear of Death.  The devotion explores how Satan uses fear to keep believers from living boldly for Christ.  We are referred to John 8:44 where John describes Satan as a "murderer" and "the father of lies."  Satan is further described in the devotion as not someone whose chief aim is to kill us but instead to deceive us into believing that "that self-exaltation is more to be desired than Christ-exaltation, and sin preferable to righteousness."  If we don't we repent and seek forgiveness of sin from Christ, than we are eternally damned - hence why the devotion refers to deception as Satan's "one lethal weapon."  If we do repent and seek forgiveness of sin from Christ, than we are eternally saved (see Romans 10:10) and Satan is neutralized.  Piper shares: "[i]f [Satan's power to deceive] could be taken out of his hand, he would no longer have the power of eternal death. That is what Christ came to do—take that weapon out of Satan’s hand....[Once we are believers], [t]ry as he will, Satan cannot destroy us. The wrath of God is removed. His mercy is our shield. And Satan cannot succeed against us."  The devotion then moves to describes in more detail how Christ neutralized Satan: "[t]o accomplish this deliverance, Christ had to take on a human nature, because without it, he could not experience death. Only the death of the Son of God could destroy the one who had the power of death."  We are referred to Hebrews 2:14-15.  When Christ was nailed to the cross, He also nailed our sin to the cross.  The devotion winds down by sharing that "freedom from fear" was Christ's aim in His death.  Fear of death is described as enslaving us and preventing us from living boldly for Him which is what Christ ultimately seeks - that we glorify Him in our lives.  We stop seeking "big headed self-preservation," and instead seek what Christ desires (serving one another - see Galatians 5:13), even to the point of death.  Believers know that our mortal and earthly bodies may decay and pass, Christ is saving a place for us in Heaven - see also Romans 8:11.  Rejoice in Christ who gives us true freedom!

My Prayer: Father God You are an awesome God who loves me, saves me and gives me true freedom!  Thank You Father God.  I am not deserving of how You save and for the unbelievable blessings You pour out for me every single day and for eternity.  My sin is great and it continues...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please continue to heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts.

 Psalm 119

I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts. Psalm 119:45

While I anticipate going back to my study of Isaiah, for today I once again listen to DesiringGod.com's Solid Joys daily devotion - which today focuses on the freedom promised to believers - which John Piper describes negatively as the freedom from sin, shame, guilt, etc. and positively as the freedom for holiness - namely the good works God prepares for us beforehand (when we were created by Him - Ephesians 2:10).  Piper describes the text for today as a promise and he translates the beginning of the text "wide place" by using "freedom" to emphasize the power of the promise of freedom for believers. Piper first starts by defining freedom as "open spaces", confinement, and "smallness of mind."  He urges believers not to be confined the thoughts that might be planted by Satan but instead we should renew our minds (Romans 12:2).  He uses Psalm 18:19 and God's gift of wisdom to Solomon from 1 Kings 4:29 to help us more fully understand the openness God promises for those who seek His precepts (His Word). Piper then defines the freedom Jesus wants us to appreciate - using John 8:34 and 32. This freedom is more fully defined as Piper uses 1 Peter 1:4 where is shares how believers are "partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire."  This is of course an incredible freedom - one that I aspire to more fully appreciate every single day - starting by seeking His Word.

My Prayer:  Lord Jesus, Your Word is lamp to my feet and a lamp to my path - and I am grateful for how I get to experience Your presence daily and for You to communicate with me and further sanctify and mold me into more of Your image.  Thank You Jesus!  Incredible blessings.  I am not deserving of such blessings.  My sin is great and it continues.  Help me turn from and overcome my sin and turn towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor.

1 Peter 2

Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves. Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor. v16-17

In his words of encouragement to believers in modern day Turkey, in v11-25, Peter "urge[s]" us to live Godly lives in a pagan society.

First, Peter points out that we are "foreigners and exiles" (v11) - implying that we are citizens of Heaven, and our allegiance lies with Christ and as such we should glorify Him (v12).  We must submit ourselves to "every human authority" (v13-14, 17-18) and in the face of persecution, we should follow Christ's example (v21-25).

Believers ARE free - free from the bondage of sin and free to live FOR Christ.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God and You have given me freedom indeed!  Thank You Jesus for freeing from the bondage of sin!  What a great God You are!  I am not deserving of adoption into Your family because me sin continues!  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul and mind and love others as You love me. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

Hebrews 9

How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! v14

In chapter 9, the author of Hebrews continues to compare and contrast the First Covenant and the New Covenant, with the focus this morning on worship, the tabernacle, and sacrifice.  Note how Jesus offered himself as an unblemished, eternal sacrifice - "SO THAT we may serve the living God"!

While he uses another text - 1 Peter 2 - John Piper delivers the same message here. Through Christ, we achieve both freedom from the sting of sin and death and freedom to serve.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who died for me so that I would no longer be slave to sin - thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of such a gift...I sin...daily.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

Galatians 5

But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. v13

Paul warns the Galatians to avoid using freedom in Christ as justification to continue in sin.  Yes, we are no longer slave to sin and we do have freedom from the sting of sin and death, but we should use this not as freedom to sin but to serve.

The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6

We are warned once again by Paul in v26 to not be conceited as such arrogance leads to sin in spite of our freedom (sin of commission).

Sandwiched between of course in 5:22-23 are Paul's fruits of the Spirit verses: "[b]ut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law".

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an amazing God who loves me and who has saved me from the sting of sin and death; You sustain me, encourage me, protect me, heal me, etc. and so much more - thank You Jesus for the many blessings You pour out for me.  I am not deserving - I am often full of conceit - please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind, and love others as You love me. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’you would not have condemned the innocent.

Matthew 12

I tell you that something greater than the temple is here. If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’you would not have condemned the innocent. v6-7

Our faith is about leaving a mark on others - and the Pharisees focused on the ceremonial law...and about their status and about being right.  Jesus came so that we do not have to focus on the ceremonial law but focus on the moral law of loving God and loving others.  And Jesus is a fulfillment of Old Testament law...freeing us to focus on what Jesus calls the two top commandments (Matthew 22:37-40).  The Ten Commandments provide us an example of the moral law and the two top commandments as defined in commandments 1-4 (love God), and 5-10 (love others).

When we love God, He transforms our hearts and minds to be more like His (Romans 8:5-8 , Romans 12:2) and as a natural response we want to love others because God loves all of His children.  I can see this in my own life as I know God loves me and so I am seeking service opportunities outside of the church so that others outside the church can see the love of God at work and be drawn to Him.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an amazing God who loves me and frees from the rituals of the Old Testament ceremonial law, freeing me to love and serve Him and to love others.  Thank You Jesus for this freedom.  Yet I am undeserving of how You love and bless me as I daily miss the mark and fail to live for You and others.  Please forgive me and help me turn from such sin and towards You. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

The fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart.

Jeremiah 30

The fierce anger of the Lord will not turn back until he fully accomplishes the purposes of his heart. v24

God has a plan and He has made promises.  Nothing can stop God's plan and God will always keep His promises.  God's plan includes exile, punishment and restoration of His children.  It also includes sending His Son (see v21) and reconciling us to Him through the cross.  God created and designed us to glorify Him and this could only be accomplished through Jesus who gives us the power and freedom to serve.

See also John Piper message here.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves us and who gives us freedom from the sting of sin and death, and freedom to serve.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not worth such love and such a gift.  I worry.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

Isaiah 1

Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. v18

The vision that Isaiah saw is fulfilled in Jesus Christ - if we only we admit that we all sin and need a savior and that Jesus Christ is that Savior.  God is so patient with us as He was with the Israelites.  God wants us to have freedom from the sin that enslaves us - for us to be free to live as God intends us - unlike the cycle of sin, shame, guilt, etc. experienced by Adam and Eve during The Fall.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

Thank You Jesus!

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an amazing God who has set us free - free from being slave to sin and You provide eternity in Heaven with You.  Thank You Jesus.  I am not worth such a gift.  I worry and am harsh with my words and actions.

Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling.

Psalms 2

Serve the Lord with fear and celebrate his rule with trembling. v11

We must acknowledge that God reigns (Colossians 1:16-17) and that we exist to glorify Him.  That should drive us to live in reverent fear of God - again not as an angry God but as a God who is slow to anger and abounding in love, and who is in control.

Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. 1 Peter 1:17

Those who do not believe that Jesus is their Lord and Savior may see Jesus as either irrelevant or as in the way of serving our own interests.  Yet for me, I know that God loves me and that I find joy and freedom in serving the Lord for I know that is why exist.

See also posts here on freedom.

In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. 1 John 5:4-5

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God and You reign with love.  Thank You Jesus - for all that You are and all that You do....that You are slow to anger and abounding in love.  That You give me life to the full.  I am not worth such blessings.  I worry.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Please give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.

Judges 17

In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit. v6

We should be thankful that we have a king - and He is the King of Kings - Jesus Christ!

When we do as we please we falsely believe that we have freedom.  Yet we worship false Gods and we are slaves to our sin. Only Jesus Christ promises true freedom - freedom from the sting of sin and death.

They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.” 2 Peter 2:19

But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. Romans 6:17-18

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:56-57

In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. v4-5

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17

Lord Jesus - help me live with the full understanding and power of the freedom I have - freedom from the sting of sin and death, and freedom to be who You intend for me.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who provides true freedom - You died for me so that I could be free.  Free from the sting of sin and death. Thank You Jesus.  I am not worth such love.  I am weak - I worry.  I am harsh with my words and actions. Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of cancer. Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart.

Proverbs 21

A person may think their own ways are right, but the Lord weighs the heart. v2

In the midst of sin, we often find ways to rationalize our actions.  Yet God knows our hearts and there is no justification for sin.  God also knows that once hardened, our hearts become slaves to sin.

When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. James 1:13-15

God helps us with our temptation and frees us from being slave to sin - see also this post.  This same freedom also enables us to better carry our God's will for our lives.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, what a great God You are!  You nailed my sin to the cross and give me life - life to the full!  Thank You Jesus!  I am not worth such love.  I am lazy and I neglect my relationship with You.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome my sin and turn towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind.  Help me love others as You do.  Help me grow in my faith.  Protect me from temptation and strengthen me.  Strengthen Lisa.  Please heal and cure Lisa of her cancer and the side effects from chemo.  Help me lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus - I pray that they choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Help me lead and serve my family and serve You.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.

Psalm 94

When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. v18-19

Jesus wants us to be His hands and feet so that we can spread the good news of Him to all parts of the world - see Matthew 28:16-20, John 15:12.

Through Him we have power.

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. John 15:7

We also have freedom - freedom from sin...and we are given this power and freedom to accomplish His will for our lives.  We are to be bold.  When we are bold we may often feel like failures but when we truly trust in Him, we do not sink below the waves (Matthew 14)...our feet do not slip.

My Prayer: Lord, You give us the ability to walk on water and if we have faith and trust in You we do not sink below the waves.  What a great God You are!  You are worthy of my worship and praise.  Yet often I do not fully trust and have faith in You - forgive me Jesus.  Help me overcome my doubt and lack of faith.  Help me turn towards You and love You with all of my heart, soul, mind and strength.  Help me love others as You do.  Help me be bold.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give me strength.  Give Lisa strength.  Please heal and cure her of her cancer and the side effects from chemo.  Help me lead and serve Lisa, Zach and Dustin...and serve You.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

The Lord is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.

Psalms 10

The Lord is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. v16

Believers are encouraged to focus on the eternal.  In this verse, David reminds us to do just this...in the context of earthly kingdoms, powerful nations, governments, etc., the message is the same - everything earthly will pass away but God will not and we will someday be in Heaven with Him and the only thing that matters is how we glorify and serve Him with our time on earth.

See posts here and verses below.

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. Matthew 6:19

But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ....Philippians 3:20

My Prayer: Lord, You have saved a place for us in Heaven - thank You Jesus.  I am not sure how I feel about death but I am certain that I am thankful for how You beat sin and death for me and gave me both freedom from both.  Yet I don't live often with this freedom in mind, so please forgive me Jesus.  Help me turn from my sin and towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength.  Help me love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give me strength.  Give Lisa strength. Please heal and cure her of her cancer and the side effects from chemo and radiation.  Help me lead and serve Lisa, Zach and Dustin...and serve You.  Please help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message today and every day.

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me. I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side.

Psalms 3

I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.  I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side. v5-6

We need protection daily - physical, spiritual, emotional, etc.  We often do much (I know I do) to take steps to protect ourselves, even going to the point of NOT doing something to avoid harm (fear of failure, etc.).  Yet God is the one should be taking all steps to protect us, and as David writes hear in this Psalm as he runs from Absalom, He is always there to protect us.  This should give us freedom to serve Him without fear of failure or harm.  See also Romans 8:1-2 (recommend reading full chapter for context):

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.  Romans 8:1-2

My Prayer:  Lord You are a great God full of love and compassion for me...and patience...I am not worth such blessings Jesus.  I fail to serve You in the capacity that You ask of me.  Please forgive me Jesus!  Help me overcome and turn from such sin and turn towards You.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give me the courage that only You can provide.  Give me strength.  Give Lisa strength. Please heal and cure Lisa of her cancer and the side effects of chemo and radiation.  Help me lead and serve Lisa, Zach and Dustin and help me serve You.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.
