He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

Luke 13-20

Day 309 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - this morning focusing on what my commentary* refers to as the Perean Ministry. My commentary indicates that "[d]uring this period of his ministry Jesus once again teaches through numerous parables. His parables cover a wide range of subjects, including the cost of discipleship, the value of lost souls, the rejection of his kingdom, the need for humility, and the unrighteousness of hypocritical religion."  The book of Luke is the exclusive focus this morning.

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

More than anything, I am reminded of the importance of humility.  Humility is a critical component of one's faith and faith does not exist without humility.

Other key verses from the reading this morning that emphasize humility:

For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Luke 14:11

In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. Luke 14:33

Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it. Luke 17:33

We MUST remember that we exist not for ourselves but for the glory of God.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an incredible God who loves me and who has blessed me beyond what I deserve.  Thank You Jesus! But again, I am not deserving.  My sin continues...and will stay with me until I am home with You.  Please forgive me for my worry and other sins.  Help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up. He said: “In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared what people thought. And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me justice against my adversary.’ “For some time he refused. But finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care what people think, 5 yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so that she won’t eventually come and attack me!’”

Matthew 19, 11, Mark 10, and Luke 9, 10-11, 17, John 10

Day 308 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - this morning focusing on what my commentary* refers to as the "final two months of [Jesus'] Galilean ministry." Jesus sends out 72 of His disciples to broaden the work of His ministry and to prepare the way for the church.  The scripture this morning includes a number of parables, including the Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37), and the Parable of Persistence (Luke 11:5-8). Upon prompting, Jesus also teaches the disciples how to pray (Luke 11:1-4). Finally, Jesus is in Jerusalem for the Festival of Dedication (Hanukkah) and once again meets opposition from the Jewish leaders who attempt to stone Jesus but He escapes.

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

Of note this morning are Jesus' words on persistent prayer not just in Luke 11 but also in Luke 18 where He tells us The Parable of the Persistent Widow.  John Piper also urges us to take to heart how "persisting, persevering prayer - is utterly important for us"[.]

Lord Jesus, help me persist and persevere in my prayer!

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are persistent and You are faithful.  You never leave or forsake me, and all of Your promises are true.  I am grateful for all that You are an all that You do - it is overwhelming that You love me and You died for me.  I am undeserving of such love.  I continue to worry.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You. “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.

John 8-10

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. John 9:3

Day 307 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - this morning focusing on Jesus' continuing teaching in the face of opposition from the Jewish leaders.  Jesus heals a man blind from birth and this healing sparks a furious debate between Jesus and the Jewish leaders regarding Jesus' identity and ancestry.  Among Jesus' responses:

Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid, for I know where I came from and where I am going. But you have no idea where I come from or where I am going. You judge by human standards; I pass judgment on no one. But if I do judge, my decisions are true, because I am not alone. I stand with the Father, who sent me. In your own Law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is true. I am one who testifies for myself; my other witness is the Father, who sent me.”  John 8:14-18

But he continued, “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins.” John 8:23-24

Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:34-36

“I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” John 10:14-18

Yet among all of Jesus' teachings from this morning's scripture, key for me this morning is the healing of the blind man and Jesus comments on the healing.

I am reminded of a similar comment by Paul:

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and I have seen Your power in weakness...in me and others.  Your grace IS sufficient...more than sufficient.  Thank You Jesus for never leaving of forsaking me.  I am not deserving of such love.  I continue to worry.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

John 7-8

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” John 8:11

Day 306 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - this morning focusing on Jesus' celebration of the Festival of Tabernacles during the 2nd year of His ministry. My commentary* notes: "[w]hen Jesus finally arrives in Jerusalem he will spend his time teaching and confronting the religious leaders who have assembled. It is a time of mixed feelings among the Jews. Some are busy trying to have Jesus arrested, while others are convinced by his teaching and miraculous works that he is the Messiah." My commentary* also notes how even some among Jesus' brothers do not believe that Jesus is the Messiah. Most of the scripture reading this afternoon covers opposition from the Pharisees and Jewish leaders, yet at the end, within scripture not all versions include, is a portrait of Jesus' mercy and compassion.  He encounters an adulterous woman the Jewish leaders seek to stone to death yet Jesus remarks: “[l]et any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her[,]and those seeking to stone the woman back down and leave. While even Jesus' brothers remain uncertain that Jesus is the Messiah, it is clear, however, that Jesus is full of compassion and mercy - and Jesus seeks for to forgive others as He forgives.  This is a tall task indeed but with help from the Holy Spirit we can love others as Jesus loves and forgives us.

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  Colossians 3:12-13

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an amazing God who loves me and forgives me for my sins...which are many, including grave sins...I am grateful.  I am also undeserving.  My sin continues...including putting early comfort ahead of You.

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.

Matthew 16-18, Mark 8-9, Luke 9,17

For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. Matthew 16:25, Mark 8:35, Luke 9:24

Day 305 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - this morning focusing on how Jesus prepares ..."his chosen disciples for his death and to strengthen their ministry in carrying on his work. At this point in Jesus’ ministry the apostles are truly convinced that Jesus is the Messiah, but apparently they too have notions of a political Messiah. Realizing that their understanding of his messiah-ship is still very limited, and that their somewhat simplistic faith will be tested, Jesus begins to tell the apostles about his death, as well as the burdens which they themselves will face. Talk of their Leader’s imminent death must surely confuse these men, who have hopes of playing key roles in a wholly different kind of kingdom."*

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

The reading this morning includes the Transfiguration (Matthew 17), as well as teachings on humility.

Just as Jesus prepares the twelve for their mission, we too must understand the burdens and cost of following Jesus.  Yet John reminds us that obedience to God is not burdensome.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. 1 John 5:1-4

Paul provides similar words - comparing his comfort and power from his position as a Jewish leader to now following Jesus:

But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. Philippians 3:7-11

It helps for us to focus on how we are not citizens of this world but instead citizens of Heaven and investing eternally.

My Prayer: Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who gave me faith.  You also helped me grow in my humility (more work here...) and see how following You is not burdensome.  Thank You Jesus - for these blessings and so much more.  I am grateful.  I am also not deserving.  I worry, and I have other sin...please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.

 Matthew 15-16, Mark 7-8

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Day 304 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - tonight focusing a number of encounters around Galilee, including north of Galilee, such as Tyre and Sidon, and it includes one particular encounter Jesus has with a Canaanite woman who pleads with Jesus to heal her daughter. My commentary notes: "[a]s descendants of Noah’s son Ham, against whom a curse had been directed, the Canaanites are looked down upon by the Jews as unworthy of God’s blessings. So the woman’s request is an excellent opportunity for Jesus to teach his disciples once again about the universality of his kingdom." My reading also includes a warning by Jesus to his disciples to beware of the "yeast" of the Pharisees and Sadducees - with the yeast being the hypocritical teaching of these groups who denied Jesus.

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

The encounter with the Canaanite woman of course underscores how we must remember that all deserve the Good News of Jesus Christ - all are deserving of salvation; it also not up to us to save but only to share the Good News -

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who gave me faith - thank You Jesus!  I am grateful but I am undeserving of such a gift as salvation - the greatest gift of all time.  My sin continues...worry, etc.

Day 303 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - focusing on Jesus ministry as my commentary* notes it enters its second year.  This morning's reading includes the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus and Peter walking on water, and challenging teaching by Jesus.  We also see growing opposition to Jesus not just from the Jewish leaders but also from those who hear Jesus' teaching and cannot accept such teaching, let alone follow it.  We see scripture here that reminds us that is only Jesus who softens our hearts to His teaching and to His role in our forgiveness and salvation.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an amazing God who loves me and who gave me faith....and life...to the full...thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of such a gift - the greatest gift of all time!  My sin, including worry, etc. continues.  Please forgive me and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love.

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.

Matthew 9-11, 14, Mark 6, Luke 9

Day 302 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - focusing on Jesus' selection and sending out of the twelve apostles. My commentary* notes: '[i]nterestingly, Jesus does not appear to place particular emphasis on organization, methods of evangelism, or academic religious training. The 12 apostles are mostly of simple education, but the power of Christ is with them."

This morning's reading also includes Herod's act to behead John the Baptist.

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) . Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

Of note with regard to the sending of the twelve:

- Jesus gives the twelve authority (Matthew 10:1–4, Mark 6:7, Luke 9:1, 2)

- They are to proclaim the message and not focus on the outcome (Matthew 10:5–15, Mark 6:8–11, Luke 9:3–5)

- They will be opposed, just as Jesus was

Each of the above are noteworthy in and of itself, but for me this morning, how Jesus gave the twelve authority is key.  Just as Jesus gave the twelve authority, so it is with all believers.  We must understand that Jesus gave all believers that same power that raised Jesus from the dead.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who gave me the same power that raised You from the dead - You bless me beyond what I deserve.  I am grateful, but I do not deserve Your love and the many blessings You pour out on me.  Please forgive me for my worry, and my focus on the world.  Help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength and energy.

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Matthew 8-9, 13, Luke 8-9, Mark 4-6

Day 301 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - focusing on Jesus' miracles as my commentary* notes: ..."the miracles are a means of confirming the message that the kingdom of God is now being established with power! God is establishing his rule through Christ, and proving it with the miraculous power which Jesus exercises over the forces of nature, over the spirit world, and over death and disease."

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

Acknowledging the power behind Jesus' miracles - that Jesus is who He claims to be  - is without doubt important.  It's not about what Jesus does, it is about who He is and the power He has...over everything...forever.

Just as Jesus challenges some of His followers to examine why we follow Jesus, we must do the same...are we willing to put Jesus first in our lives.  DesiringGod.com has more thoughts on this challenge.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who rules over all - Creator and King of Kings - I am grateful that You love me and saved me...and I am fully aware that I am completely undeserving.  My sin is daily and it continues.  Worry, etc. Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, apply, and be obedient to Your message today and every day.

Consider carefully what you hear[.]...Therefore consider carefully how you listen.

Matthew 13, Mark 4, Luke 8, 13

Consider carefully what you hear[.]...Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Mark 4:24, Luke 8:18

Day 300 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - focusing on Jesus' use of parables which my commentary notes "[t]hese illustrations of a moral truth or principle are usually in the form of a simple comparison. As often as not, Jesus’ parables are comparisons with things either found in nature or known through human experience. Although Jesus says the parables will have the effect of concealing truth, he must have in mind those hearers whose hearts are closed to his teaching. Most of the lessons are fairly simple to understand and especially well-suited for the common man, to whom Jesus directs his teaching.  Many parables are recorded by the Gospel writers throughout Jesus’ ministry, but a particular series has been collected, principally by Matthew, which gives unique insight into Jesus’ use of these simple illustrations."

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

As Jesus uses these parables, He tells us (captured by both Mark and Luke) to be careful with how we receive His words.  Many parables of farming are used with the implication that farming requires effort, first to prepare the soil for seed, then to water and tend the soil, and to prevent weeds from choking out the harvest. DesiringGod.com has a great post that emphasizes these critical efforts.  We must cultivate a personal relationship with Jesus.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who has given me faith and blessed me abundantly...beyond what I deserve.  I am grateful.  But my sin continues...daily.

From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Luke 11-13

From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. Luke 12:48

Day 299 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - focusing on primarily Jesus' teachings, particularly on hypocrisy as the Pharisees and Jewish leaders questioned Jesus on matters of the law while they failed to follow key aspects of the law.  On the question of hypocrisy, Jesus gives us the Parable of the Watchful Servants (Luke 12) which talks to those of us in positions of leadership and influence - and John Piper has a warning for us: "[t]he more knowledge you have of God’s will, the more you are accountable for doing it."

As someone in a position of influence - at least in my own household - I am driven into the arms of Jesus as God can only equip and assist me if I remain (abide) in Him.

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples." John 15:1-8

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who has helped me produce good fruit and I know it is only because of You - thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of how You have helped me produce good fruit - nor am I deserving of any of the blessings You pour out on me.  My sin continues...worry, distracted by the world, etc.

Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”

Matthew 8, 11-12 Luke 7-8, 11 and Mark 3

Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” Luke 7:44-47

Day 298 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - focusing again on the early efforts of Jesus' ministry. My commentary notes: [n]o doubt by this time the religious leaders are also becoming increasingly aware of Jesus’ extraordinary power. Instead of accepting it as divine, they accuse Jesus of having power from Satan. What follows is a scathing rebuke of the Pharisees for their disbelief and hypocrisy, and an urgent call for repentance." Many of Jesus' miracles are captured in this morning's scripture, including the healing of the centurion's servant, and other healings. Many are supporting Jesus at this point, personally sacrificing to do so, and in so doing, demonstrating deep love of, and faith in, Jesus: note Jesus' anointing by the sinful woman (Luke 7:36-50). Once again, while there is much worthy of pause and reflection this morning, it is this passage where I stop and dig in - as John Piper provides insight.  Piper indicates that our love of Jesus is the result or evidence of the extent to which we acknowledge the gravity of our forgiven sins.  This is why humility is key. We all sin (see Romans 3:23, 1 John 1:8) but it is our acknowledgement of the gravity of our sin that drives us to Jesus as He is only One to save.  See more on humility from John Piper.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God and You have forgiven many sins for me already and many grave sins - yet You died on the cross for me.  I am grateful - the greatest gift of all time - but of course undeserving.  My sin continues...daily...including worry, etc.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Matthew 5-7, Luke 6

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6

Day 297 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - focusing this morning on the Sermon on the Mount. My commentary indicates that this sermon "[c]over[s] a broad spectrum of spiritual topics, [and] Jesus speaks of the nature of the kingdom, of repentance, of faith, and of worship—and particularly of prayer and humility. Always demonstrating a concern for human welfare, Jesus deals specifically with family and social relationships and discusses at length the effect of possessions on one’s faith and peace of mind. The discourse begins beautifully with the blessings in store for the righteous, and harshly with the woes which will befall those whose lives are spiritually rebellious."

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

While this sermon is rich with teachings, each of which are important and worthy of their own reflection and study unto itself, the promise of Matthew 5:6 has always been one of favorite of the entire Bible. Matthew 22:34-40 and Exodus 20 (The Ten Commandments) both refer to the greatest commandment, which is to love God. Matthew 5:6 expresses this commandment in words that drive us to God with urgency and also with a promise of satisfaction - a promise that I can personally say is true as are all of God's promises.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an amazing and faithful God and all of Your promises come true as "no word from God ever fails".  I know this in my life.  Thank You Jesus for Your faithfulness.  I am not deseving of such faithfulness and love. My sin continues...worry, etc.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul and mind and love others as You love me.

For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.

Matthew 9, 12, Mark 2-3, Luke 5-6, and John 5

For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings. Hosea 6:6, Matthew 9:13, 12:7

Day 296 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - focusing this morning on growing opposition to Jesus' ministry. My commentary notes: "[b]y indicating that he has the divine authority to forgive sins, Jesus naturally arouses immediate reaction from the Scribes and Pharisees. Since they correctly believe that only God can forgive sins, they reject the possibility that Jesus himself is divine and conclude instead that he is guilty of blasphemy....Through two parables Jesus tells them that their system of legalistic observances simply will not substitute for the true righteousness which God has always demanded....Despite growing opposition, Jesus continues to go about teaching and performing miracles, yet almost consciously without fanfare. As if to underscore the urgency of his mission in the face of opposition, Jesus appoints 12 of his disciples as specially chosen apostles to aid him in his ministry. With their added support, Jesus continues to attract even greater crowds from among the common people."

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

Whatever its form may be, all believers will face opposition to some degree and some of this opposition may be harsh and harmful - even physical harm for some. I think of those in places around the globe (see ministry Voices of the Martyrs ministry) where belief in Christ is unlawful and believers in these places face imprisonment or death.  Most of us, particularly those in the USA are not likely to face such opposition, we nonetheless should be prepared to stand firm in our faith and to defend it.  In Jesus' day, the Pharisees and teachers of the law focused on ceremonial law (vs moral law) and external behavior consistent with this law. Jesus wants our hearts and lives to reflect a love of the Lord (heart condition).

Once we begin to live a life that reflects a love of the Lord - an inner heart condition - we begin to develop mechanisms to defend our faith as we trust in God above all. Jesus relies on scripture as an example to defend His faith.  We must also do the same.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who has transformed my heart and life and I am grateful for the many blessings You pour out for me.  You protect me and give me freedom to express my faith.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of these blessings.  My sin is great...and daily...including worry, gossip, etc.

Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

Matthew 4, 8-9, Mark 1-2, and Luke 4-5

When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Mark 2:3-5, Luke 5:18-20

Day 295 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as I move further into the New Testament - focusing this morning on the rapid growth of Jesus' ministry.  My commentary* notes that "[a]pparently in order to emphasize the nature of his ministry, Jesus does not come as a religious leader in any traditional sense. He holds no official position, nor is he specially trained to be a priest or other cleric." Jesus then goes into Galilee: "[u]sing the city of Capernaum as a base for his travels, Jesus teaches and performs miracles around the Sea of Galilee (Lake of Gennesaret) and throughout the entire province. It is here that Jesus gains popularity among the people and begins to see the crowds swell."

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

While all of Jesus' miracles in the reading today are of note, of particular note are how (1) people make extraordinary efforts to see and hear Jesus (see Matthew 9:1-2, Mark 2:1-5, Luke 5:17-20; see also , and (2) how Jesus knows our heart condition which is most important vs external behavior (see Matthew 9:3-8, Mark 2:6-12, Luke 5:21-26).

We must all reach a place in our life where we become desperate for God - He should become the most important focus in our life.  Like those who lowered the paralyzed men from the roof into the room to see Jesus, we must remove obstacles that prevent us from growing in a relationship with Jesus.

“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come! If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell. Matthew 18:6-9

While Jesus refers to not just the literal meaning of removing obstacles, He is also referring to the figurative meaning of obstacles as discussed in this post on DesiringGod.com.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an amazing God and You removed all obstacles, even going to the cross for me, so that I could have forgiveness of sins and eternal life.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of such a gift - the greatest gift of all time.  My sin continues...worry, etc.  Please forgive me Jesus an help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me. He must become greater; I must become less.

John 1-4, Luke 3

He must become greater; I must become less. John 3:30

Day 294 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as my commentary* moves further into the New Testament - focusing this morning on Jesus' early days of His ministry, including the calling of the first disciples - Andrew, Simon (Peter), Philip, and Nathanael - and the first of Jesus' miracles: turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana, and the healing of the royal official's son in Capernaum.  The reading from this morning also includes Jesus driving the merchants from the temple, His teaching of Nicodemus, Jesus interaction with the woman at the well in Samaria, and it ends with my commentary* noting how John the Baptist is arrested.

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition

Again, there are numerous aspects of scripture where one can focus but I am stuck by how John the Baptist acknowledges how he must be less as Jesus is greater. John the Baptist's position and status was growing and it took great humility for him to accept His mission - to tell others that the Messiah so many had been waiting for had arrived.  Humility is one of the most important character traits of a believer and John Piper discusses it in this post.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God and all that I am and all that I possess is from You - without You I am and have nothing.  Thank You Jesus for blessing me - my cup runs over.  I am not deserving of such blessings and of Your love.  My sin is great and daily, including worry, etc.

Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”

Matthew 3-4, Mark 1, Luke 3-4, and John 1

Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’ I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.” John 1:32-34

Day 293 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as my commentary* moves further into the New Testament - focusing this morning on John the Baptist's ministry, including the baptism of Jesus. The commentary notes the intrigue regarding how "sophisticated city people would go out of their way [from Jerusalem] to be taught by a rough man of the wilderness whose preaching is unusually harsh and demanding." Those who come to John are referred to as "vipers" and called out for their sin and warned of damnation. Today's reading also focuses on Jesus' temptation in the wilderness and how Satan found Jesus at His most vulnerable - after 40 days and nights of fasting - and how Jesus stood on scripture to defend against temptation.

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition

While there are several aspects of this morning's reading where one can focus, I am struck by John's clarity regarding who Jesus is - John is unequivocal that Jesus is the Messiah.  His testimony to the Jewish leaders reflects his confidence in Jesus.

I am reminded how all believers must have confidence in who Jesus is, including who He is in each of our lives as personal Lord and Savior..  Both Peter and John stood with confidence before the Sanhedrin:

Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” Acts 4:18-20

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You ARE my personal Lord and Savior.  I know this and I have confidence in this.  I have personally witnessed the heart and life transformation in my own life and in the lives of those around me.  I am grateful Jesus!  Yet I am not deserving.  I know I have sin in my life, including worry, etc.

After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

Matthew 2 and Luke 2

After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Luke 2:46

Day 292 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as my commentary* moves further into the New Testament - focusing this morning on the early life of Jesus up through the time before He starts His ministry. This includes a visit from the Magi, Joseph/Mary/Jesus' escape to Egypt under threat of Herod's order to kill all male children in Bethlehem, and Jesus' growth and maturity.  The commentary* notes: "Little more is known of Jesus’ first 30 years. It is known that Jesus has at least four brothers—James, Joses, Judas (Jude), and Simon—and also some sisters, who are not named. Because there is no further reference to Joseph, it appears that he probably died while Jesus was still a relatively young man. The support of his mother and younger brothers and sisters, therefore, would naturally fall upon Jesus as the firstborn. For many years, then, Jesus evidently has provided for his family by working as a carpenter, having learned the trade from his father."

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition

Jesus' listening and asking questions among the teachers in the temple give us instruction on how all believers, regardless of age or maturity, are to "gr[o]w in wisdom and stature" (Luke 2:52).

While John Piper, in this post, urges pastors in particular to take heed of this call for wisdom, Piper uses the text to call all of His children to strive for wisdom and stature in the Lord.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who is the source of all wisdom and knowledge - without You, I would have nothing and I would be completely lost and damned as well. Thank You Jesus for giving me light and life - I am grateful...and undeserving.  My sin continues.  Please forgive me for my worry, lack of action, etc.  Help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.  Help me love You with all of my heart, soul and mind.  Help me love others as You love me.

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

Luke 1-2 and Matthew 1

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14

Day 291 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as my commentary* moves further into the New Testament - focusing this morning on the birth of Jesus and John the Baptist.

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition

The story of the birth of both Jesus and John the Baptist is filled with angels and miracles and is anticipated greatly by those who believe in the prophecies from the Old Testament. John Piper attempts an answer to the age old question "who is Jesus to you?" and he refers to Hebrews 1 where the author writes:

The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. Hebrews 1:3-4

For me, Jesus is the greatest gift of all time - He came for me, died for me, rose again and He gives me life - both to the full and eternally.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus - You are the greatest gift of all time and I am completely undeserving.  My sin continues...daily...including worry, etc.  Please forgive me and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.

Matthew provides an account of the line from Abraham, while Luke provides an account from the line all the way back to Adam. My commentary* makes note of how sinful people are used in the line of Jesus, including both Rahab and Manasseh, reinforcing how

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

Mark 1:1, John 1:1-18, and Luke 1:1-4

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. John 1:12-13

Day 289 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as my commentary* moves into the New Testament and notes, with the Gospels as a starting point, "[a]ll is now ready for the most important event in human history. It is an event planned even before the creation of the world. It is the keeping of a promise made to Abraham over 2000 years earlier....Until now God’s blessings have been reserved mostly for a chosen people, but now they are to become available to all people in every generation....But because his teaching challenges traditional practices of the Jewish religion of his day, and because he claims divine authority, Jesus meets strong opposition from religious leaders."

*Smith, F. LaGard. The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®). Harvest House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

Although I've posted this previously, I am reminded of it this morning - John Piper's post on how though we may all be created by God, only those who are believers are children of God, adopted into His family.

Similarly, and naturally, this rebirth into God's family, means we are citizens of Heaven and our allegiance lies there first and foremost. This is particularly relevant for those in the U.S. today as many may be uneasy about an election. Belief in the lamb (Jesus Christ), and not in any party or public official, is what provides us the peace we so desperately seek.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who humbled Himself as a man and then died on the cross for me - so that I would have life...incredible.  The greatest gift of all time.  I am not deserving of such love.  My sin is great and it continues - gossip, worry, etc.  Please forgive me and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 3

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Day 288 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as my commentary* further describes the historical interlude or intertestamental period between the Old and New Testaments which is attributed to the period 425 B.C. to B.C. Although many exiled Jews returned to Palestine, "[m]any Jews choose not to return and are still living in Babylonia, Egypt, and other areas as well....Thus the law’s influence itself has diminished....Of course local religious beliefs have a profound effect, as already seen when the Jews intermarried with those involved in idolatry and various pagan practices. Also of significant impact are the Persian beliefs in astrology and the occult. As a result, when many Jews read their Scriptures in this post-exilic period, they attach special meanings to any passage dealing with demons and angels, or light and darkness." A number of cultural and political influences are noted, including the rise of the synagogue (vs the temple), the role of the rabbi (vs high priest), and sectarianism which significantly impacts the Jews' unity and strength - and most importantly their faith, particularly to see and coalesce around the Messiah as the promised king so prophesied many times during Jewish history and in the Bible.  Additionally, my commentary describes how the crumbling of the Assyrian empire leads first to the rise of the Greek, then the Roman empire. Of course the Jews are described as being caught in the middle as empires around them rose and fell, and "[w]ithout doubt, the Jews’ only hope is the coming of the conquering king they have been promised, and what better time than now? It may be this very thinking which, just over a century from now, will be a significant factor in how the Jews of that day react to an unassuming man of peace who claims to be their king."

This morning, I think of a study recently completed on the topic of Christian apologetics where we reviewed John Piper's book Why We Believe the Bible. I am also drawn to scripture that refers to the inerrancy of scripture.

As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. Psalm 18:30

Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him. Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar. Proverbs 30:5-6

And the words of the Lord are flawless, like silver purified in a crucible, like gold refined seven times. Psalm 12:6

For no word from God will ever fail. Luke 1:37

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You and Your Word are indeed one and the same and both are flawless.  We can trust in You as You are faithful.  I am grateful Jesus for how You saved me, sustain me, and You never leave or forsake me.  I am not deserving of such a God.  I worry and I have other sins. Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others. So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

Genesis 32

So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. Genesis 32:24-25

Day 287 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as my commentary* gives us a glimpse into the historical interlude (intertestamental) via the Apocrypha.  "Despite their current lack of credibility among a large segment of believers, these disputed writings [Apocrypha] are generally moral in nature and do give insight into some of the history, customs, and religious developments of the Jews during this intertestamental period." This post from DesiringGod.com argues "[w]e can read [the Apocrypha] discerningly yet constructively, critically yet charitably. Doing so will lead one to see the many ways it actually enhances our understanding of the divinely inspired Scriptures."

This morning I pause to think about how best to study the Bible - I am led to "wrestle with God" just as Jacob did and as encouraged in this post.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God - I know You love me and You are willing to wrestle with me during good and bad times - as I desire to be sustained by You, encouraged by You, and of course forgiven by You...all of which I know You can do as you have done already.  Thank You Jesus!  I am not deserving of such a God.  I worry and I have other sins.

Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness"[.]

Old Testament (OT): Genesis 1 - Malachi 4

Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness"[.] Exodus 34:5-6

Day 286 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as my commentary* pauses to reflect on the entirety of the Old Testament from the beginning through the teachings of Ezra and Nehemiah.  This pause coincides with what my commentary* refers to as the historical interlude (425 B.C. to 5 B.C.) between the Old Testament and the New Testament - which of course starts withe coming of the promised Messiah Jesus Christ.

With the OT, we see a God who is rich in mercy and compassion, patient, slow to anger and abounding in love, and faithful

John Piper offers this great brief explanation for what he believes is the value of the Old Testament for believers. At the end of this explanation, he offers up two benefits of the OT for believers:

"First, meeting God for who he really is so that we can know him and worship him since his character was revealed as truly in the Old Testament as in the New Testament."

"Second, letting the hundreds of promises in the Old Testament wash over you as your blood-bought birthright in Christ Jesus so that every day, you set yourself free from sin by the superior pleasures of the promises of God."

Of the many attributes of God, one of my favorite is how God is slow to anger and abounding in love.  These words are described many times (not with these exact words) and with these exact words 7 times, including one occasion when God spoke to Moses in Exodus 34 as He instructed Moses to carve out new stone tablets for the Ten Commandments.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are all knowing, all powerful, perfect, and I know personally how You are slow to anger and abounding in love.  I am not deserving of how You have poured out Your love for me.  My sin continues...worry, etc.  Please forgive me and help me overcome and turn from my sin towards You.

I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds.

1 Chronicles 4-9

I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago. I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds. Psalm 77:11-12

Day 286 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as my commentary* completes a review of the genealogies recorded in 1 Chronicles for the purpose of establishing a record of those who returned and settled in Israel and Judah upon return from exile. Another key purpose for recording such a history is to never forget how God has blessed us - we must remember. Worship and praise naturally results from remembering what God has done.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an awesome God who loves me and who has done so much for me - I am undeserving of Your rich blessings and love.  My sin is great and daily - including worry, gossip, etc.

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.

1 Chronicles 1, 2, 4, 3

A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.  God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing; but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land. Psalm 68:5-6

Day 285 of my chronological study of the Bible with The Daily Bible® - In Chronological Order (NIV®) (available by purchase through Amazon - author F. LaGard Smith) continues as my commentary* turns to the book of 1 Chronicles where genealogies are recorded "from Adam to Noah to Abraham and Isaac; the descendants of Esau (the Edomites); and the 12 tribes descending from Jacob (Israel), with the exception of Dan and Zebulun. Special emphasis is given to the royal tribe of Judah, the priestly line of Levi, and the Benjamite genealogy of King Saul."  My commentary* notes that "An important part of any nation’s history is the preservation of national archives. Genealogical records are particularly vital to the division and ownership of property, to marriages and inheritance, to right of office, and to royal privilege. Perhaps one of the most important reasons for the genealogies will not be fully appreciated until the Messiah is born. At that time one of the many proofs of his messiah-ship will be that he is of the lineage of King David and the house of Judah, just as the prophets have foretold.....Although they do not make particularly exciting reading, their importance to the nation at this time cannot be overstated."

I am reminded of the genealogy recorded by Matthew that describes Jesus lineage from Abraham.

For me, at least a couple of takeaways.  God promised a messiah and that the messiah would come from Abraham and David's line.  God fulfilled a promise with Jesus.  God is faithful.  We also all have an earthly father but more importantly we have a heavenly father in Jesus (Abba).

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, Abba, You are a good, good Father - and my Lord and Savior.  Thank You for coming to save me and for never leaving or forsaking me.  I love You.  I am not deserving of such a God.  I continue to sin, including worry, gossip, etc. Please forgive me Jesus!
