I appeal to you, brothers,[a] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.

1 Corinthians 1

I appeal to you, brothers,[a] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. 1 Corinthians 1:10

I continue my study of 1 Corinthians.  I am assisted in my study by the Christ-Centered Exposition Series commentary for this book.  This morning my focus is a review - unaided by the commentary - of 1 Corinthians 1:10-17. Here, the text focuses primarily on Paul's words to the church in Corinth that they avoid divisions by chasing a culture of personality - I say this because Paul refers to "quarreling among you" in verse 11 and in verse 12 he clarifies by saying "what I mean" where he describes this culture of personality in v12-16.  Specifically, Paul was warning about worship of a teacher/pastor vs worship of Jesus.  In general, a church may face disagreement and conflict across many areas - some key areas (i.e. doctrine), other areas less important (i.e. church music, decor of church, about whether to have a program or not/and how to have it, etc.).  It is most important to agree on the matters of doctrine - and to be aligned with scripture on these matters. Everything else is less important and disagreements can be tolerated as along as handled with grace.

Comment and discuss this post.

My Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are an amazing God who loves me and who is full of grace for me - even when I have criticized and complained about church leadership - thank You for Your grace and forgiveness.  I am not deserving of such grace and forgiveness - my sin continues.  Please forgive me Jesus and help me with my sins of commission and omission.  Help me overcome and turn from such sins and turn towards You.  Help me love You with all of m y heart, soul, and mind and love others as You love me.  Help me grow in my faith.  Give Lisa and myself wisdom and strength.  Please heal Lisa of her cancer and from the side effects of chemo.  Help us lead Zach and Dustin to You Jesus and for them to choose You as their Lord and Savior.  Please provide Godly friends and spouses to Zach and Dustin.  Help me serve You, my family, my church, and others.  Help me understand, be obedient to, and apply Your message for me today and every day.
